Luling Texas Watermelon Thump
Head Out to the Luling Watermelon Thump!
If you have ever thought about going to the well-known Watermelon Thump in Luling, Texas, you should definitely stop just thinking about it and go! It is a great time for everyone in the family. Held during the last full weekend in June, this is a festival not to be missed! And you have to go at least once, just to say you have been there.
Although this festival is in a small town, it is the perfect size for the whole family to enjoy. There is something for everyone at every age. Not too big and definitely not too small, this is a festival that you should experience. You will have family memories to last a lifetime.
It can get a bit hot in the middle of the day. In fact, when we went there was a lady who had heat stroke and had to go off with paramedics. I suggest you arrive right when the gates open and stay for a few hours. Keep hydrated. Find shade from time to time. Arriving early will allow you to enjoy the Watermelon Thump before it gets too unbearably hot. Also, parking is not easy to find...so arriving early is a plus. Enjoy!
The Watermelon Eating Contest
It is a Watermelon Thump Tradition!
Be sure to enter your kids (and yourself) in the Watermelon Thump watermelon eating contest. There are different age groups and the fastest 3 in each age group win a prize! Of course, some of the kids have been attending this festival for a long while and they can eat watermelon like little machines! It is amazing to watch and a great time for all.
Although my kids did not even come close to winning the contest, it is a memory that they will enjoy for a long time to come. And they had fun trying!
Watermelon Thump Desserts
OK. I would never discuss food at a festival without at least mentioning the fattening stuff. The goodies that set a festival apart.
The funnel cake at the Thump is nothing short of AMAZING! Although one of the shirt vendors told me that the funnel cake was burnt the day before, it was so delicious when we were there. It was soft in the middle and just a bit crunchy on the outside. But not too crunchy. PERFECT!
On a side note, speaking of the shirt vendors, venture further in than the main strip for a wider variety of shirts and prices.
And be sure to try the Cheesecake on a Stick. The picture is below. It is so darn good!
We got ours in the carnival ride fairway.
Fun for the Kids
Kids love rides. And there are plenty here to please most younger kids. From a ferris wheel to kiddie rides. And, of course, there are wristbands available to save money and make riding a breeze. Although many people do visit the Thump in Luling, it is still not super crowded and lines are either small or non-existent. Perfect! Be sure to remember to bring ice water because the rides are on asphalt and there is NO shade. This is something they should definitely fix because we saw people about to pass out and the ambulance even had to come. Bring hats, ice water (freeze your water beforehand), and even a hand-held fan if you have one.
Of course, there is also the seed spitting contest and the watermelon eating contest. And my daughter also got to ride a mechanical bull! She loved it. It was a great time for all.
There is something for everyone when it comes to food at the Thump. From BBQ to roasted corn on the stick, the options seem endless. So many yummy goodies to try!
Vendors line the main fairway with a lot of tempting treats. Surely, there will be something to make even the most picky eater happy.
And yes, they have a beer trailer. So, if it's your thing, you can grab a cold one and sit under the pavilion and listen to music. They have many different bands scheduled.
Watermelon Themed Clothing
You will see many people at the Thump wearing watermelon-themed clothing. Both young and old. Have some fun with it!
This is super cute and would definitely stand out at the Thump!
Cheesecake on a Stick! AMAZING!

Have you been to the Watermelon Thump?
There is also a Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest
This is also broken down by age group. It does span over two days if you or your child make it to the top.
We did not participate in the seed spitting contest, or even see it, but it was very popular with crowds spilling to outside of the building it was housed in.
Did you know that a World Record spitting contest was won at the Watermelon Thump?
Or any watermelon festival?
