Metalbeard - The Coolest LEGO Character Ever

Updated on March 22, 2015

Everything Really IS Awesome

If you have landed on this page you probably saw the fairly recent and extremely epic LEGO Movie. When I saw trailers for it, I have to admit that I wasn't convinced - watching a 5 minute Lego clip on YouTube was always fun and you could admire the work that had gone into creating it, but 90 minute film of nothing but colourful Lego blocks? I thought it would pretty much be one great big giant headache...

How wrong I was...

From the first thirty seconds of the film I was laughing as well as being in awe of the flawless design and animation (as far away from the migraine of a film that I was expecting as possible!) Another point I was delighted to be proved wrong about was the plot. I had, somewhat unfairly, thought that the main focus of the film would be showing off the animation and so the plot would be non-existent at best and utter rubbish at worst. Again, I couldn't have been more wrong. I don't want to give much away as I'm sure there are still many people who haven't watched the film, but it really is worth seeing if you haven't already.

Why Metal Beard Is My Favourite Character

Metal Beard is funny enough, witty enough and cool enough to be the favourite character of many LEGO Movie fans. Again, I don't want to give too much away so I will give a description as best I can without plot spoilers or ruining any other aspect of the film for people.

He is the leader of a pirate crew, all of whom have previously faced the evil Lord Business to try to stop his reign of destruction. The outcome wasn't great for the pirate team and the result was Metal Beard having to rebuild himself using building blocks from his ship, which was destroyed in the battle. The child in me loved Metal Beard from his very first appearance and his character probably made me laugh as much or more than most of the others combined - and that's REALLY saying something!

Some of Metal Beard's best lines from the movie (in my opinion), include:

"Really harrd? Wiping ye bum with a hook for a hand be 'really hard' - this be impossible!"

"First law of the sea - never place your rear end on a pirate's face"

"I had to replace every part of my once strapping, virile pirate body with this useless hunk of garbage ye see before ye"

I thought this was a great movie and should have been an Oscar nominee for best animated film. Alas, the Academy never listens to me. I agree that Metal Beard stole every scene. Be he an actor acting like a pirate, or a pirate acting like an actor? Argh! We shall never know.
