My Patriotic Buffet Table for Our Summer Party

Updated on May 24, 2014

A Bit of Americana for Parties this Summer

I love summer and hanging out in the back yard. I especially love the planned and impromptu parties and get-togethers we end up hosting each year.

For our family (here in the USA), summer begins Memorial Weekend and doesn't end until Labor Day Weekend -- it's tradition and the way we still like to think of that season. We also have lots of birthdays and anniversaries during those months, so we are never short on reasons to get together.

For this years' kick off party, we decided to use a patriotic theme with a bit of a vintage twist. The good news is this theme is good all summer long -- Memorial Day, Independence Day (4th of July) and Labor Day. Family reunions, and other special occasions make this themed buffet table perfect for the warmest season of the year.

Come, join me for a walk through our patriotic buffet table set up we used to kick off summer this year!

This was such fun to put together. Family members let me know what they wanted to eat. We didn't even pull out the grill for this party since it was still cool and they were calling for possible spotty showers.

We still had some all American fun dishes though -- the full menu appears below. This was our "Kick-Off to the summer party so we still have plenty of time to haul out and use the grill. And believe me, we will!

Below are more photos, the menu and some suggestions for your own patriotic party buffet table. Enjoy!

Burlap for a Table Cloth - Adds to the Vintage Feel

LA Linen 60" Wide Jute Burlap Fabric By The Yard, Red.
LA Linen 60" Wide Jute Burlap Fabric By The Yard, Red.

I used a 6 foot table for my buffet. So, I bought 3 2/3rds yards of 60" wide burlap.

I placed a white table cloth first, letting it cover the entire front and top of the table. It was 90" so it hung down a foot or so in the back.

I then placed the red burlap on top. I loved the red and white, patriotic look. It was cheaper than a linen table cloth and looked much nicer than the plastic cloths.

Burlap also reminds me of simpler, vintage times.

Burlap Accent Roll - Continue the Theme...

I also got a roll of natural burlap that was 9" wide. I used it to make the swag you see on the front of the table.

Burlap is a natural product that is eco friendly. I love to use it with any vintage theme.

Buffet Centerpiece

In the Midst of it All...

I had a lidded basket that I thought would make a cool centerpiece -- sorta reminiscent of a picnic basket. However, I didn't want it to just sit there in the middle -- how boring.

So, I found some dark blue fabric with white stars and ironed knife pleats into it at one end -- about a yard or so long. I stuck the other end inside the basket to cover up a small box I would use as a riser for the letters.

And, speaking of the letters... I made them from paper mache letters at the hobby store. If you would like to learn the technique for vintage style letters, you can read that article here.

I placed the letters, USA, on top of the fabric covered box inside the basket and let the hinged lid hold them in place.

Voila! Instant buffet table centerpiece!

Items I used in Creating this Buffet Table include...

Red Wire Basket - Perfect for a Red, White and Blue Buffet Table

I used a red, wire basket similar to this one. I lined it with a white bandana and filled it with 2 of our families' favorite bite sized treats: mini muffins in chocolate chip and banana nut.

These never last long on the buffet but they are so easy to make and display!

Home Essentials & Beyond 22144 Metal Scroll 3 Tier Rack With Plates
Home Essentials & Beyond 22144 Metal Scroll 3 Tier Rack With Plates

This is one of my favorite type serving pieces for buffets. Plates are included with this stand.

The legs swing out to make a sturdy base for 3 individual plates to hold your food. When party time is over, swivel legs together for easier storage!

I have owned many of these over the years (including the exact one pictured here). My current swivel leg stand is pictured above.

Gorgeous Red Pie Pan - Use for more than just pies...

This is the exact same pie plate you see in the buffet pictures above. I have two of them and use them constantly -- and not just for pies...

On the patriotic buffet, I used one of my pies pans for, well... a pie. The other one I used for the baked beans. Since they are oven proof, there are a host of foods you can cook in these and they always look awesome!

I love red and for a patriotic buffet, these were perfect.

Our Summer Party Menu - Simple -- No One Missed Out on the Fun

We make all sorts of different dishes for our summer parties but for this particular party and to start off the season, we went with easy. We wanted everyone to be able to sit and visit -- not running to and from the kitchen or stuck behind the grill. So, this is what we had:

  1. All American Hot Dogs -- You can't have an Americana party without these!
  2. Turkey Pinwheels -- For my sister who doesn't like hot dogs, I also made turkey pinwheels. So easy and can be made ahead of time.

Tortillas, thin sliced turkey, garden vegetable cream cheese spread, baby spinach and Colby Jack shredded cheese. Layer on tortilla, roll tightly and cut. Refrigerate until serving.

  3. Baked Beans -- This is my mom's claim to fame and we rarely have a party without them!
  4. Chips and Dip -- We like plain, ridged chips with jalapeno dip! Yummy!
  5. Guacamole Cups -- I make homemade guacamole and then fill filo dough cups with it. You get the "chip and dip" feel with these and so easy!
  6. Mini Muffins -- as mentioned earlier, we like these bite sized treats. I change up the flavors but for today I used banana nut and chocolate chip. We snack on them all through the party!
  7. Iced Sugar Cookies -- Another favorite around our house. I have two nephews who hate chocolate -- can you imagine? Anyway, we still need something sweet so these cookies were perfect!
  8. Watermelon Canapes and Balls -- Another simple but really good treat. Combine cream cheese (8 oz), 1/4 cup of powdered sugar and 1/2 cup of crushed pineapple. Make sure your pineapple is drained really well. The juice can break down and refuse to mix with the cheese/sugar. Mix well.

Cut watermelon in 1½ inch squares. Be sure to have an even number -- top and bottom pieces. I put my pineapple mixture in a baggie and cut off the corner and dollop generously on half the watermelon squares. Place the other half of the watermelon squares on top to form a sandwich. Add one more dollop to the top and place a fresh blueberry in it. Now your have a Red, White and Blue fresh fruit canape!

  9. Lady Finger Sandwiches -- I made the filling with whipped topping and strawberry milk flavoring. You can also use seedless jam. Then I drizzled blue tinted sugar glaze on top to continue the patriotic color scheme.
  10. Cherry Pie -- Yup, in honor of George Washington and his cherry tree, we had a cherry pie. You could use whatever flavor you like but I would stay away from cream pies if you are outside. You don't want them going bad in the sun and heat!

Decor for the USA Themed Table

Easier to Find than you Think!

When we decided our first summer party would be a red, white and blue affair, I started looking around the house for items I could use to decorate the table. I find quite a few!

The supporting cast was made up of:

* A blue glass bottle I stuck a few silk daisies into

* A USA themed photo box

* A ceramic vase with a stars and stripes design

* Blue and white traditional patterned bandanas

* A sculpture of a "jack" from the old game of "Jacks"

* A red, white and blue box my dad had sitting on his dresser. It's painted with a shabby chic style.

I found all of this around the house, basement and attic. I didn't need to buy any of it which made it all the better! However if you need to find a few new items, consider it an investment in your home and party decor arsenal!

This flag motif set of 3 book boxes is on my list! I love them and for buffets, you can stack them together and place a platter or bowl on top for instant height.

Decorative bottles of vases are a great way to pop some color on a food table. Add flowers like I did, or just use it plain.

Food Table Decorating

So, that's it -- that was our food table. Of course, as soon as the pictures were snapped it underwent a transformation! My family and friends sure were hungry!

Grab your favorite BBQ, picnic or summer foods and set them up in a way that will make everyone say "WOW!" right before it's devoured. It's okay, just take pictures so you can remember how nice it looked! You'll be the envy of all your guests.

I hope you enjoyed tagging along for my 1st summer party of the season! I'm pretty sure I will be using the red, white and blue, vintage Americana theme again this summer. It's versatile, fun and gorgeous as well!

A very attractive table for a summer event. I need to add some accessories next time and not just fill the table with food. Good job.
