My Zombie Toys

Updated on November 20, 2012

This is a story called . . . Brayden's Bears

This is a story about zombie toys, not something that you would want to read to your five year old as a bed time story.

Brayden's bears were his pride and joy and his parents bought them for him as often as they had an excuse to.

He was only six years old, and in a few years he would be made fun of by his peers for having what they called "baby toys" and he would abandon them, it was just the way of the world and his bears understood this. As it was, nothing brought Brayden more joy than a brand new stuffed toy.

He would sit amongst them and color in his coloring books. He was almost keeping his drawings inside the lines now, and was very proud of that achievement!

This gorgeous teddy is available here:

Brayden's Zombie Bears Story Continues

It was the night before his seventh birthday and was excited as children are the day before their birthdays or Christmas, or a big family vacation.

Brayden lay buried under his covers against the wind outside his nice little suburban home, his Mum and Dad had long since gone to bed. The bears comforted him in a wall of quiet, black-button-eyed understanding. He was thinking of what bears he was going to receive the next day, and how Liam, Josh and Zac were going to be coming home with him on the bus after school for the party his parents were throwing him.

Even Dad was finishing work early, and usually Dad worked late.

Brayden's Bears Continues . . . .

He was listening to the howling of the wind, and just drifting off when St. Christopher, his favorite bear, twitched.

Though Brayden had his arms around the bear, he did not relinquish his grip but simply stared up at the darkened ceiling. St. Christopher twitched again, and out of his peripherals, Brayden saw the bear's head move ever so slightly towards the door. His little pale hands went cold, and his tiny heart started to thud. He rolled over on top of St. Christopher ever so slightly and set him gently on the rug by his bed.

Then he rolled back and began to think. . . .

More of Brayden's Bears

It was normal for a six-year-old boy to believe in magic just a little bit, even if the rumors about Santa being fake turned out true.

Even if your parents were secretly Santa, surely there was magic elsewhere in the world. He would not come to follow the religion of scientific theory and plausible explanations for years to come. St. Christopher had definitely moved, and he did not think it was anything to do with being sick.

Things got wobbly sometimes when Brayden was sick. Maybe this was God's birthday gift to him. He thought of all the times he had wished all of his Teddy bears were real so that he could have adventures with them and play at the park down the lane with his little group. Like the pied piper of teddy bears.

Brayden Is Terrified!

Below him, he heard a kind of shuffling and Brayden turned his head towards the bears that lined his bed against the wall.

As he turned his head, the other bears did the same. There was a rustling of fabric as each of them swiveled their variously colored and ranging quality of heads on their non-existent necks. On a couple of the older bears, Brayden thought he heard the popping of threads.

. . . . .Brayden's mind went blank.

Brayden heard another tearing sound

There was another tearing sound from his left and he turned away from the row of sentient bears that were still staring at him like so many soulless abominations.

There was a tug at his comforter and he clutched at the top of it, unwilling to relinquish it to whatever had seized the other end. Brayden felt his bladder let go, warm liquid soaking the mattress beneath him.

First one fuzzy black ear crested the edge of the bed, and then another. Just then the two beady little black eyes of St. Christopher were staring right back at him. The tearing sound, Brayden realised with growing horror, had been the bear's jaws opening wide, revealing only his white cotton insides.

Brayden let out a little moan

Brayden let out a little moan, and tried to call for his Mum. The call came only as a squeak.

Then, with a quickness that Brayden should have anticipated, St. Christopher fell forward on one of the young boy's hands. There was suction, like when he put his palm over the vacuum cleaner, except there was a pop and pain as his skin peeled back,

Brayden let out a high scream of pain. It did not carry.

He felt St. Christopher get heavy with his blood and then thankfully sink down to the floor, almost saturated in blood. Brayden reacted with animalistic ability that he had never known.

He let out another feeble scream

He let out another feeble scream and threw the comforter over the zombie bear. He felt the cold eyes of the others on him, dislocated from his sudden jerking of his covers. Brayden leapt out of bed, his wet pajamas cool against his skin. He could have sworn he felt a small fingerless paw reach for him, pulsing and throbbing. Brayden flew out into the hall, straight for the front door at the other end.

Behind him, he heard the popping and tearing of stitches, which were the mouths of his beloved stuffed family becoming unhinged. Had his little heart not been throbbing so hard in his ears, he would have heard their soft landing too. His little hand stretched out in front of him, he hit the door open with learned practice. He was across the street, feeling the cold November wind shrink his skin around his little bones.

3 Zombie Creepy Cuddlers - Run For Your Life!

He turned across from the Robinsons' house.

He turned across from the Robinsons' house. It was always that in the scary movies his friend Zac watched that the monsters stopped at a certain point. Once you got in the house. Or the car. Or once you got into the magic circle. Somehow, he thought his bears would stick to the same rules.

As it was, as the clock struck midnight throughout the north eastern town, and the November wind blew, the teddy bear army tumbled into the night one by one, their stitched jaws unhinged and their stubby grotesque arms outstretched. Brayden turned and ran down the lane, towards the playground - surely, he would be safe there!
