Piggy Banks are a Delightful Way to Teach Children Money Skills

When my children were young, a relative bought them each one made of white ceramic covered with bright red polka dots. Our daughters loved their banks and one of them still has hers ... even though she is in her 30's now!

Piggy banks have long been a popular tool for teaching money skills to children. Our girls could easily spend a happy hour dumping the coins out and counting their savings. Their cute little pig banks were a useful way to teach them about the value of each coin. It was also the first step in teaching them the value of saving money.

As they grew older, they also received locking money boxes, which were an easier way to store bills as well as coins. Even then, their banks were still dear to their hearts. Of course, by the time they were teenagers it was time to open a savings account at the bank and give them the opportunity to learn about compound interest and even more of the advantages of saving money.

No matter how sophisticated they have become in their money skills, however, it all began with a pair of cute piggy banks!

I'm sure the children in your life will appreciate one, too!

Banks for Babies

Piggy banks are a great gift for babies, baby showers, or baby's first Christmas. Older children love their first bank, and will often cherish their first piggy bank for decades.

In fact, you are never too old to enjoy having a cute little animal to store your spare change! You might be surprised at what a great gift idea a bank can be for almost anyone! I even know a few adults who have one on a shelf. Often, it is a bank that they still have from their own childhood.

An Example of a Popular Design of Bank

Isn't this bank adorable! I think it would look sweet in a nursery, whether the baby is a boy or a girl!

Know A Cute Baby Who Needs a Little Silver?

A silver bank is an elegant choice! Parents will love it as a baby gift and they will appreciate your thoughtfulness for thinking of it.

This is a piggy bank that a child may very well keep until they are adults ... and they will always remember who gave it to them!

You can find some silver-plated banks that you are able to have engraved with the child's name, which will make it even more precious to them. In addition, silver banks are a little harder for a young child to break, which means they are much more likely to survive until adulthood.

Piggy Banks are not always Pigs - Think of Them as "Un-Piggy" Banks!

Piggy banks are called that because the pig is the most common shape and design for these beloved banks. However, not all banks come in the shape of pigs.

There are banks in the shape of a wide variety of animals, as well as shapes that are much more creative than the traditional pig. Search below for some the many popular bank designs, and you will see some creative ideas that you may never have considered.

Let your imagination be your guide! What sort of bank do you think will be the perfect gift for the person you plan to surprise?

Personalized Piggy Banks

Another option for lovers of banks is to select one that can be personalized. In addition to the silver-plated banks that I mentioned above, you can also find vendors that will have the child's name or initials painted onto the bank.

This is one way to create a gift that makes the recipient feel that their bank is special and unique. What child doesn't like to see their own name painted or engraved on an object, especially if that object is something they will use to store their money?

Give a child or friend a personalized bank and they will remember both the gift and the giver for years to come!

Have you ever had a piggy bank, or bought one for a child you loved?

I still have the ceramic piggy bank I received on my first birthday. There are so many cute ones available, but I think the little pig is the cutest. This article may help someone solve what to get for a special child for Christmas. Most children already have more toys than they need . . .
