Planewalkers Highlight: Liliana Vess and Liliana of the Veil

Updated on April 17, 2013

Liliana, Queen of Darkness, Mistress of the Swamp, Princess of Pain!

On Planewalkers Highlight today we have the sexiest Planewalker, (In MHO) Liliana. She is I discard machine. Knock out your enemies creatures before they even hit the board. Then make him pick and choose what cards he has to get rid of. Finally Slap him in his face by taking all those cards he had to/Chose to throw away. I Know I'm evil, but its fun with Liliana! Have a peak at morbid death spiral cause by this Dark Planeswalker

Planeswalker — Liliana

(5)

+1: Target player discards a card.

-2: Search your library for a card, then shuffle your library and put that card on top of it.

-8: Put all creature cards from all graveyards onto the battlefield under your control.

This Black Planeswalker has been released in the following sets:Magic 2011 (Mythic Rare), Duel Decks: Garruk vs. Liliana (Mythic Rare), Magic 2010 (Mythic Rare), Lorwyn (Rare)

Alright we can start to see the benefits of having a Liliana around here. I personally play Liliana Vess with Black (Obviously), Blue, And Red decks. There are many cards that compliment each other well in all three kinds of mana, but we'll take about that later. Lets take it one skill at a time.

+1: Target player discards a card.

This will make a great combo ability with a lot of cards. A discard deck is very popular and Liliana would make a perfect compliment with one. Playing Black and Blue you can drive your opponent into the ground and make sure he doesn't get a card in edgewise.

-2: Search your library for a card, then shuffle your library and put that card on top of it.

So not only can you make your enemies deck smaller and smaller, you can make your hand larger and larger. This card is a combo in itself.

-8: Put all creature cards from all graveyards onto the battlefield under your control.

Sheer power over the grave. This ability played later in the game especially if your playing someone that likes to attack often and drop cards in the graveyard just to clear your field of creatures. I also love doing this to someone that plays with Vengeful Pharaoh. It ruins their day.

She just looks better in Foil.

Liliana of the Veil

My favorite wicked wizard.

Planeswalker - Liliana

+1: Each player discards a card.

-2: Target player sacrifices a creature.

-6: Separate all permanents target player controls into two piles. That player sacrifices all permanents in the pile of his or her choice.

Liliana of the Veil has a cheap casting cost, which means you can get her out quickly. It's the bonus that keeps giving, especially if you draw her at the beginning of the game. I believe she has the lowest casting cost of all Planewalkers. I ALWAYS play Liliana of the Veil with Liliana Vess. They work incredibly well together. Let me show you how.

+1: Each player discards a card.

Ok, so both Vess and Veil (I call them the Twins of Turmoil TM) get a lifepoint just for forcing an opponent to discard. Again merged with blue or red discard spells this can be devastating.

-2: Target player sacrifices a creature.

If both the twins are on the board and your adversary has only a few powerful creatures on deck he will hate you. Most likely you knock of a mob or two before he kills Veil, and he'll go for her first. This gives time for Vess to rack up enough life to use her -8: Put all creature cards from all graveyards onto the battlefield under your control. Which should be well stock because of Veil making your enemy dump his own creatures into your new spawning pool.

-6: Separate all permanents target player controls into two piles. That player sacrifices all permanents in the pile of his or her choice.

If you can get Veil up to 6 or more lifepoints then let her rip and there are even more minions Vess can spawn and unleash on their former master. Let the Bodies hit the Floor!
