Free Printable Card Game - Animal Trumps

Updated on September 19, 2014

Printable Animal Cards

On this lens there are 40 printable cards to download which when put together create an animal trump card game. This game is a version of the classic "Top Trumps" series; a version that I have created and is available on this lens and nowhere else.

When I was young I loved playing trump cards with my friends and memorized loads of obscure facts from the cards. My favorites were the cowboys and horror packs. We used to play these card games constantly, even during lessons, trading the cards under the table while we were doing our schoolwork!

When I worked as a teacher I created this animal trump card game in order to help my students learn about animals and to create an enthusiasm for animals. Here I have decided to offer this printable card game for free.

I hope you enjoy playing my free animal trump card game, and please, no fighting over who is the winner!

This Top Trumps pack features a wide variety of animals that all have one thing in common; they are all predators. Compare the way they catch and kill their prey in order to out trump your opponent. This is a professionally made pack from the Top Trump brand and is perfect if you are looking for animal trump cards and do not wish to download and print my version.

Animal Trump Cards - How To Play The Game

The trump card game is for 2 or more players

1. Shuffle and deal out all the cards to the players face down.

2. The players hold their cards so that they can see only the top card.

3. The player to the dealer's left begins by reading out a fact from the top card (e.g. Top Speed 40kph). The others then read out the same fact. The one with the highest value wins and places all the cards won in that round, including their own, to the bottom of their pack. It is then their turn again to choose an item from the next card.

4. Sometimes 2 or more cards will share the top value. In this case all the cards in that round are placed in the middle and the same player chooses again from their next card. The winner of the hand wins the cards in the middle as well.

5. The player with all the cards at the end is the winner.

If this is not clear enough the two young ladies in the video clip below will show you how to play.

At first reading of the rules, I was worried that this was just War with an animal aesthetic, but the different statistics for each animal give them all a fighting chance for victory (rather than the "Ace trumps all" format of War). I'll have to try it!

Hey, some of the links to the higher res images do not work anymore. Wondered if you were able to post the hi-res images here instead of the links. That would be great.

I love them. They are perfect for my needs and I probably may purchase more. However, I can't seem to get them in colour. Can you help me.

Not the same in black and white. Thanks so much. So useful!

I recently put together my own Top Trumps homemade cards, and they look embarrassingly crap compared to these. Thank you for putting this together. Have you thought of making a lens showing how to make such professional-looking cards?

@GonnaFly: Oh, these seem to be a victim of their own popularity and have exceeded the bandwidth of the site I have stored them in. Please come back again at the beginning of the month.

A great lens, Nick. I've just linked to it from a lens I'm putting together on card games. A very generous spirit here, and love of fun. Keep it up.

These look absolutely great! Unfortunately I can't see the last five sets. I think the bandwidth may be exceeded. I'll have to come back again later to see them.

Nice Job! Love the idea of saving the the images from the web page to print them. The only problem is that you do not have backs to the cards. That is why I created my card game Swords on Shields (click on my name to go to my bio page where you can find it) in a downloadable PDF format. Version 1.0 is pretty plain. Not nearly as fancy as yours. But it gets the job done and I'll improve upon them in later versions. Hope to eventually have them professionally printed for play.
