Rebus Puzzles

Updated on September 10, 2014

Picture Puzzles That Spell Out Words

Rebus puzzles are picture puzzles, in case the word "rebus" sounds queer to your ear.

Each picture is part of a word or phrase. Another option used to make a rebus is to use only letters to form a puzzle. The formation or layout of the words or letters is important to solving the puzzle.

The picture puzzle on the bottom left of the book shown here spells out "First Rate." This is an example of an easy rebus puzzle.

I've never been good at rebus puzzles. Perhaps I should exercise my mind more and give them a try, again! Although, I do love a Far Side coffee mug I bought for my husband. It shows Godzilla driving a car with the license plate I8NY. Pretty funny, huh?

Interesting -- I'm not sure I've seen rebus puzzles before. They look kind of hard... I guess my brain isn't as flexible as it used to be.

When my son was a pre-schooler, his favorite book was a rebus that we would read together. I would read the words and he would read the pictures. Thanks for reminding me of how much fun that was.
