Scale Model Billboard Reefers
I love reefer:) A good reefer is not only relaxing, it's good for the mind, body, and soul. Buying reefers is easier than ever before too. Instead of making all kinds of phone calls looking for just the right reefer and then driving to a bad part of town to get it, you can find reefers and order them online from the comfort of your home. You don't even need a credit card because a lot of reefer vendors accept PayPal. Maybe you're thinking a good reefer costs too much? It's true that a good reefer can cost $50 to $100 (or even more, depending on rarity and quality) but with patience and a little luck, you can get a good reefer for as little as $10 on eBay. So sit back, relax, and enjoy some reefers. Collecting reefers is a great hobby:)
Collecting Reefers can be fun, but...
don't get addicted!!!
A reefer collection is fun but you have to be careful. It's easy to get carried away and what used to be a fun hobby - something you did to relax with your friends or by yourself - can become a dangerous obsession. You could end up spending all your money on rare reefers of dubious value. You could spend hours and hours searching for rare and hard to find reefers. Relationships could be affected, maybe even your job. Collecting reefers is fun, but it requires self control. I'm not saying "don't do it" - just know what you're getting yourself into and be careful. Don't let it become an obsession.
This Week's Reefer - Buffalo Butt Modern Reefer by MTH Rail King...
This Beer Reefer is a perfect example of why O Gauge trains are so much fun. This would be perfect for building a beer train to run on your layout and the price is right... This one runs on O and O-27 track and the quality of MTH rolling stock is very good.
From the 1920's through 1937 billboard reefers were some of the most colorful freight cars to ever grace an American railroad. Billboard reefers came about when freight car leasing companies realized they could make more money by letting the companies leasing their cars paint billboard style ads on the sides of the cars. The railroads didn't like this for whatever reason and complained to the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC), which issued a ruling which effectively eliminated the billboard reefer from America's railways. If you have a model railroad, however, ICC rulings don't effect you. You can run as many billboard reefers on your model railroad as you want, and many beautiful models of billboard reefers are available in HO, S, and O scales (probably N scale too). If you want to add some color and variety to your model railroad they are worth checking out. Want to know all about billboard reefers? This book is the definitive guide.
Reefer For Sale - HO Scale Reefers
If you're looking for affordable reefers, HO is your scale...
HO Scale has the best selection of billboard reefers and also the best prices. You can find HO Scale reefers for $20 or less all day long on eBay. Putting some reefers on your HO layout really livens it up with some extra color and pizzazz.
Reefer For Sale - S Scale Reefers - S Scale has some of the nicest reefers you'll find anywhere...
Some of the nicest billboard reefers are made in S Scale by S Helper Service. Most of their reefers are limited edition runs so you have to watch eBay, where they sell for close to retail - sometimes higher for a rare or high demand road name. Some of my favorite S Helper reefers are the Brookside Dairy, Robin Hood Beer, Frank Fehr Brewing Company, and Niblets Corn billboard reefers. The S Helper reefers come equipped with American Flyer compatible wheels and couplers, but they are also highly detailed and not out of place on a "scale" S Scale layout (they include a scale wheel set but you'll have to supply your own couplers).

Not what you were looking for? Reefer Madness 1936
Oops!!! Who knew??? The Reefer Madness movie...
I never would have guessed it, but several people have pointed out to me that collecting billboard reefers isn't the only kind of . I did some looking and it turns out they're correct. Reefer Madness is also the title of a film that was made in 1936 and became a comedy cult classic in the 1970's. You can check it out on Amazon... Reefer Madness
Reefer For Sale - O Scale Reefers - Color and variety for your toy train layout...
If you model in O Scale there is a huge variety of billboard reefers to run on your layout. Many of these are out of production but they're easy to find on eBay for reasonable prices. One thing I've noticed about O Scale is there seems to be a lot of "fantasy" paint schemes that probably didn't exist in real life. We're talking toy trains though and if you want to add some color and variety to your Lionel train layout you will find it in these billboard reefers.

Most reefers are ready to use as soon as you buy them, but rolling your own is a lot of fun.
