The Ultimate Retro Nintendo Games

Updated on March 5, 2013

The must have retro Nintendo games

Here we have the ultimate retro Nintendo games of all time. When the original Nintendo console was first released back in the 1980s it revolutionised the world of video gaming. The blocky graphics, simple sound effects, lack of real story line and world of make believe was top end technology and retro Nintendo games were fun.

Nintendo released many games over the years and whilst many were good at the time but got boring and mundane in the end there were a few that have stood the test of time and are as fun and enjoyable to play today as they were when they were first released. It is these Nintendo games that are considered "retro Nintendo games".

It's strange that despite the advancements in technology and the world of video gaming I can still dust off my old original Nintendo console NES and original Nintendo console SNES, whack in some retro Nintendo games cartridge, such as the ones in this article, and my young son will be glued to the original Nintendo console for hours on end and not even ask for the Xbox to be turned on. This is a true testament on just how good these retro Nintendo games actually are.

So, what are these ultimate retro Nintendo games? If you want a trip down memory lane or if you want to get in to the retro gaming scene and experience these retro Nintendo games first hand then please do carry on reading.

Retro Nintendo Games - Super Mario Brothers

As any retro gamer what their favourite one of the retro Nintendo games is and I am sure that most will say Super Mario Bros. Super Mario Bros was packaged with the NES and it really is an excellent game in all respects. The story line, i.e. rescuing Princess Peach, may be a bit cheesy but it gave the game a sense of purpose. Jumping on all the baddies on the way to defeating Bowser and rescuing Princess Peach was great fun in the wacky world of Mario and Luigi. Out of all the retro Nintendo games Super Mario Bros is my favourite and I never tire of playing it. If I were to recommend only one retro Nintendo game Super Mario Bros is it.

Retro Nintendo games - Duck Hunt

Duck hunt was the first of the retro Nintendo games that required a light gun with which to play it. The objective of Duck Hunt is very simple in that all you need to do is shoot as many ducks as you can. The graphics are simple and straightforward, as is the music but the game play is fast n furious and so addictive. Duck Hunt is one of the best retro Nintendo games ever released and it is well worth having if you are in to your retro Nintendo games.

Retro Nintendo Games - Super Mario Kart

Super Mario Kart was the original racing game on the NES, and it is one of iconic and must have retro Nintendo games you have to own. In this game you can choose from all the top Nintendo characters (including Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Princess Peach, Bowser and Toad) and race the others around a series of wacky circuits in order to win the Mushroom Cup. Arguably, Super Mario Kart is the most addictive of the retro Nintendo games and after playing it you will soon see why.

We all know what Super Mario Kart on the Wii looks like, right? Well Super Mario Kart on the SNES was the game that started it all off. Retro Nintendo games - Donkey Kong Country

One of the most memorable retro Nintendo games ever released was Donkey Kong Country on the SNES back in 1994. Donkey Kong Country is a 2D platform game where the main characters are Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong, his young and hip sidekick.

The storyline is not that great but it is quite fun. An evil croc, known as King K Rool and his henchmen of Kremlings have stolen Donkey Kong’s hoard of bananas and spread them all over DK Island. As you’d imagine, Donkey Kong is not impressed by this so he sets of, with Diddy in tow, to go and retrieve his stash of bananas.

Like all the best retro Nintendo games Donkey Kong Country is set against a bright and vivid backdrop, the game play is fast n furious and you will be hooked for hours on end. You wouldn’t think that simply collecting bananas and killing baddies whilst doing so would be good fun, but believe me it is. If you like your retro Nintendo games Donkey Kong Country is a must have game.

Donkey Kong Country is an awesome looking game with great graphics, well they were when the original game was released. Retro Nintendo Games - Kung Fu

Out of all the Kung Fu and fighting retro Nintendo games this was the video game to own. The NES version was a copy of the classic arcade game "Kung Fu Master" from Irem. Fighting games don't get much simpler than simply walking left and kicking and punching every enemy that comes your way, as well as jumping over and ducking over their flying weapons. Kung Fu is a fun game to play, although if you take a step back and have a think it is difficult to see why. Whatever it is, don't worry about it and just know that Kung Fu is one of the must have retro Nintendo games.

Kung Fu game play

Kung Fu is an oldie but a goodie. Kung Fu is simple to pick up and play but very hard to put down because it is so addictive. If you want to see Kung Fu retro Nintendo games in action take a look at the following footage, courtesy of Youtube.

Kung Fu retro Nintendo games available from eBay

Kung Fu is one of the best retro Nintendo games for the original Nintendo console. If you want to experience Kung Fu in all its glory I recommend heading over to eBay where you will find loads of top rated retro Nintendo games for sale.

Retro Nintendo Games - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade game

During the late 1980s and early 1990s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were a global success and anything and everything to do with these "Heroes in a half shell" was successful. The story was simple in that all you had to do was defeat the Evil Shredder, taking out Bebop and Rocksteady as well as all their foot clan henchmen along the way. The NES version wasn't as good as the arcade, but then given the NES was only 8 bit this was hardly surprising. Out of all the retro Nintendo games Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is in my personal top 3.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game play

There's no doubt about it, one of the best retro Nintendo games based on a cartoon ever made has to be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In this game you get to play as all the Turtles on a quest to defeat Shredder and his henchmen. The following clip, courtesy of Youtube, shows just how good this one of the retro Nintendo games really is. So, sit back and enjoy.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles available from eBay

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the original Nintendo console is awesome and is a video game definitely worth buying, and I would suggest heading over to eBay where there are plenty of bargains to be had. As well as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video game you will also find many other top rated retro Nintendo games.

Retro Nintendo games - Rampage

I first played Rampage back on the Commodore Amiga and when it was released for the Nintendo NES I just had to have it. Since then Rampage is one of my top Retro Nintendo games of all time.

Rampage is one of the easiest and most addictive retro Nintendo games of all time. Simply pick one of the two monsters, either Lizzie or George, and then go and destroy some cities. The army are sent to stop you and their gun fire will eventually kill you off but you replenish your life by eating army personnel, eating civilians and eating morsels of food you find in the buildings as you destroy them. Rampage is a video game of fantasy, destruction and fun.

Rampage never made it to the masses, which is a real shame and I think many would be players were put off. If you want one of the most under rated retro Nintendo games ever released you need to play Rampage.

Rampage available from Amazon

Amazon is a good palce to get a used copy of Rampage, just check out the products below. Alternatively, use the Amazon search box and you will find other options.

Rampage game play

If you want to see what Rampage is all about check out the following video footage, courtesy of Youtube. As you can see this game is mindless destruction but it is great fun and, in my opinion, one of the best retro Nintend games around.

Other retro Nintendo games available from Amazon

The retro Nintendo games above are my favorite classic and retro Nintendo games however there are many other top SNES games and top NES games available for the original Nintendo console.

The only way to experience retro Nintendo games is to play them on an original Nintendo console. Don't have one? Don't worry, as there are always plenty of bargains to be had on eBay.

Retro-Bit retro duo twin video game system

The best way to experience retro Nintendo games is to play them on the original Nintendo console, but if you don't have one this will mean buying a used or second hand one. FC-16 Go Portable SNES System

In days gone by it was not possible to play retro Nintendo games on the go, unless you had a Gameboy of course. The Nintendo Gameboy was a good handheld console however it does not have the same graphics, sound effects and playability as the NES or the SNES.

Well, times have changed and technology has moved on and there is now a games console that allows you to play to SNES games cartridges on the move. "What is this awesome retro gaming product?" I hear you cry. The games console I am talking about is the FC-16 Go Portable SNES system.

The FC-16 GO Portable SNES System is an awesome modern day games console that accepts top SNES games cartridges and allows you to play them on the move. The F-16 is supplied with two controllers which means you can also challenge your mates.
