Vintage Rummy Royal Game Board

Updated on December 1, 2015

Vintage Rummy Royal Game Board Sheet

Get Rummy Royal - a widely popular mid century board game. This vintage rummy board game was marketed by the Whitman Publishing Company up until the early 1980s. Research shows that the production of this game by Whitman was probably halted in "1981". In the decades to follow, the company went through several ownership transitions, but that's another story.

The game board itself is made of a sturdy foldable sheet. In the early years this sheet was made of a heavy a linen paper; the oldest I've seen is "1937". Sometime in the 1960s or 1970s the material for the game sheet was changed to plastic. Additional items needed to play the game include plastic chips or tokens, or pennies work just fine in a pinch, and a deck of playing cards.

The Rummy Royal game sheets have become quite collectible and in recent years I'm seeing fewer of them at swap meets, garage sales and Goodwill stores, but at any given time you can find dozens of Rummy Royal games available on e-bay.

The game is a variation of the Rummy family of games and although there are some differences in the game boards themselves, the game play of Rummy Royal is very similar to the game play of Michigan Rummy.

Decorating a Game Room With Vintage Rummy Game Boards

Decorating your game room with vintage game boards is still current, fun, and affordable, but rather than simply tacking up the old game boards that are tucked away in your basement or attic think about displaying game boards that follow a similar theme.

The Rummy Royal sheet can be framed nicely and has common thread with two other easy to find vintage game boards; Michigan Rummy and Tripoley. Both Michigan Rummy and Tripoley were manufactured as flat game boards and three dimensional molded plastic game boards with bowels hold the chips.

The earlier Black Cat Michigan Rummy game boards by Transogram like the "1938" version shown here frame very nicely and can still be found for sale quite often on e-bay.

I think the game with card, called Remi (we call it so) is a descendant of Rummy. Nice presentation.
