Star Trek Twenty Five Year Collectibles

Updated on June 4, 2015

Star Trek

Star Trek the Phenomenon

In 1991, Star Trek turned twenty-five years old. Even in the early years, it became more than a television series, it became a phenomenon. Those who watched it were soon identifying themselves as Trekies. After the initial series, several other Star Trek series were launched. The first of these, Next Generations, was somewhat successful, as fans hungered for more Star Trek. Later series were not as successful. And none were to enjoy the status of the original series.

Names of the main characters were well known, James T. Kirk, Spock, Uhura, McCoy (bones), and Scotty. And of course there were the people who kept the Enterprise going while the others were on some strange planet, Sulu and Checkov.

Soon we will have the 50th anniversary. What releases in collectibles will it bring?

The Silver Coins

The beautiful silver coins depicting the seven main characters, the phaser, and the Starship Enterprise were minted and housed in nice cases for protection. These “coins” are really “rounds” since they are not money, but can be found in one Troy ounce of 0.999 fine silver. A second set of “coins” honoring the Next Generation crew were issued later, and while the coins are equally nice, the characters are not as collectible as the original crew.

Star Trek Movies

Star Trek eventuallStar Trek eventually made a comeback on the big screen. There was such a demand for the original series, even in reruns years later, that the original crew joined together again and made a series of movies. Finally, the characters were recast for Star Trek Generations, which did include the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy.

Collectible Plates

Because they are done in full color, the Hamilton plates that were released are even more beautiful. These were released by Paramount Pictures, and include a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. The plates are of porcelain and were fired fourteen times. The artist Thomas Blackshear II designed these fantastic plates.

A few pins were made in honor of the twenty-fifth anniversary of Star Trek.

Trading Cards

If you are looking for less expensive memorabilia, consider the trading cards. There was a set honoring the original series, and a set honoring the Next Generations series. Because there are multiple sets available, be careful and look at what you are considering before purchasing.

I have gotten the Kirk and Spock plates as gifts as well as the full crew. The one I am trying to get my hands on is McCoy. Another thing I have is the almost complete set of collectors cards. I am short three of the holo cards.

Star Trek has influenced so many things from television to movies to technology that might never have been developed if Star Trek had not planted the seed...

I never knew about the Star Trek coins before. Thanks for the info. My son designs Star Trek items on Cafe Press and runs an online Star Trek role-playing sim. Hmm... I'll have to do a lens sometime on his endeavors! ;)

I do have a few Star Trek items myself, and all of the movies too. I've been watching the original series late at night, and some of those episodes were so darn silly. Still, the fans demanded more and got it. These collectibles are very nice.

Both my husband and I are Star Trek fans (especially the original series). My husband teaches high school, and a past student of his bought him a Captain Kirk plate like the one you have featured above.

Although I watched the original Star Trek, my favorite was the Next Generation. I watched it everyday and probably saw almost every episode. My favorite remains Darmok.

I am not a massive Star Trek fan, I enjoy the occasional TV episode and find the films very entertaining, but you can't argue that the show has had massive success over a long period of time. Lots of serious fans out there who will love these collectables. Nice lens
