My Favorite Star Wars Chess Set

Gentle Giant has long been a leader in collectibles because they're more than a manufacturing company: Their core business is three dimensional imaging of movie props and actors, providing Hollywood studios the detail they need for accurate replicas. With these same tools, the company is able to make the most accurate replicas on the market.

Gentle Giant's Chess Board

Starting with "Episode II: Attack of the Clones," Gentle Giant has been on-set to scan props, allowing them to create perfect reproductions spanning the entire Star Wars universe. From busts designed after actor and costume scans to goofier items like pink Darth Vader heads and Yodas wearing 3D glasses, they've made something to please almost any fan.

Therein lies the problems with these sorts of figures: In a market that has turned toys into objects of art, is there any way to make these collectibles something buyers are willing to play with, or are they destined to sit on display unused? Gentle Giant may have found the best of both worlds by creating a Star Wars chess set: It maintains the company's attention to detail, yet is constructed in a way that it can look just as good after years of use.
