Tablet for Kids

Updated on January 15, 2014

Best Tablet for Kids

A tablet for Kids is a must-have gift for children this year. When the electronic devices for children first came out a couple years ago, retailers were struggling to keep them in stock, underestimating the demand for these popular devices. InnoTab 2 vs LeapPad 2, LeapPad Ultra vs InnoTab 3s, NABI vs Kindle Fire HD and Ipad Mini are just a few popular topics for discussion these days. Children start asking for their own Ipads at preschool age. And parents who are not willing to spend over $400 on IPads do have plenty of options. If an electronic device for children is on your Shopping list, you have come to the right place. We will help you pick out the right tablet for your child by highlighting the differences and similarities between electronic devices suitable for children.

Your options:

Tablets for toddlers, kids ages 4 to 9, older kids, and adults

LeapFrog LeapPad Ultra/Ultra XDI Kids' Learning Tablet, Green (styles may vary)(Discontinued by manufacturer)
LeapFrog LeapPad Ultra/Ultra XDI Kids' Learning Tablet, Green (styles may vary)(Discontinued by manufacturer)

LeapPad tablet for young kids. LeapPad 1, LeapPad 2, and LeapPad Ultra are 3 different generations of LeapPad tablet designed for kids ages 3 and up. The newest version is the most advanced, with kid-safe web, rechargeable battery, 8GB on-board memory, and great learning apps and games (a few are pre-installed, and additional apps and games can be purchased separately).

Kindle Fire HD 7", HD Display, Wi-Fi, 8 GB (Previous Generation - 3rd)
Kindle Fire HD 7", HD Display, Wi-Fi, 8 GB (Previous Generation - 3rd)

The most affordable model of Kindle Fire HD, without the annoying special offers. If you are ready to spend a little more, you may want to consider Kindle Fire HDX with camera, more memory, built-in microphone, and better battery life. With parental controls and Kindle FreeTime, the Android tablet is the best option for kids ages 6-7 and up. This tablet will save you money in the long run, with thousands of free apps available.

VTech InnoTab 3S Kids Tablet, Blue
VTech InnoTab 3S Kids Tablet, Blue

Tablet for kids ages 3 to 9, similar to LeapPad. Will make a good gift for kids ages 3 to 6. This device is cheaper than LeapPad and has a good library of educational apps (a few are pre-installed, and additional apps and games can be purchased separately)

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Kids Edition (7-Inch with Orange Bumper Case)
Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Kids Edition (7-Inch with Orange Bumper Case)

Newest Samsung tablet for kids. It just came out on the market and, so far, has very positive reviews. The tablet comes with bumper case, USB charging cable, wall adapter, and quick start guide. Although it is on the pricey side, it comes with a great protective case (!), fast processor, and access to free and inexpensive Android Apps.

Tablet with wi-fi, designed for kids.

Toy vs tablet with an internet browser

A tablet for kids is an educational toy with a touch screen and preloaded apps and a capability to connect to app store for game downloads. Currently, tablets for kids are manufactured by several different companies: VTech, LeapFrog, Fuhu, Archos, Inspiration Works, Vinci, and a few others. The electronic devices for younger kids - LeapPad, InnoTab, and Vinci tablets are used to be just Toys without Internet browsers, but the newest versions of LeapPad and InnoTab, Leappad Ultra & InnoTab 3s with wi-fi, offer an app for kids-safe web. Please note that you will not be able to download Android apps, like Netflix and Angry Birds, onto the new or older versions of the devices. InnoTab and LeapPad are the most popular electronics designed for kids ages 4 to 9 years old. Vinci is an electronic device for children under 4 years old. If you are considering buying InnoTab 2s, don't be tricked into thinking that you will be able to play Netflix movies or browse Internet on it. The wi-fi capability is for connecting to VTech's website only -"WiFi* secure sync to download apps". For kids ages 7 and up (and even some younger kids, at parental discretion), I would recommend Kindle Fire HD or HDX Tablet. Although it's not specifically designed for children, it's a great option, if you are looking for an Ipad-like electronic device.

Fuhu NABI or Kurio Kids may be a good fit for elementary and middle school children. The devices designed for kids are comparable to Amazon's Kindle Fire, but customer feedback on Amazon's device is a lot better when compared to reviews of the other two tablets. So, for the price you would pay for Fuhu Nabi or Kurio Kids, you may want to consider Kindle Fire HD tablet, especially now that Amazon has released the new Kindle Fire HD Parental Controls App, allowing parents to decide how they want children to spend their time on the device and giving adults an option of restricting access to any area of the device.

Best Tablet for Kids

For kids ages 3-6 years old, I would recommend LeapPad 2 or Leappad Ultra. If you are on a tighter budget, InnoTab 2 or InnoTab 3s with wi-fi are also good options.

For kids ages 7 years and up, Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD (without special offers) are worth considering :) Be sure to check out my article Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD for kids to learn about parental controls available on the new versions of Kindle Fire

The newest Samsung Tablet for kids is also very worth considering. However, at this price point, Kindle Fire HD or Ipad mini might be a better option, especially for older kids.

Best Tablet for Children ages 6 and up

This is the tablet I recommend for kids ages 6 and up. Although it is twice the price of a LeapPad or InnoTab, it will save you money in the long run. Free apps, free books, fast Internet Browser, and a built in MP3 player make this tablet a great investment (when compared to the money you are likely to spend on Leappad and Innotab games and accessories). And, if you don't have a tablet of your own, you will want to borrow this tablet every once in a while. Excellent buy! I know several 7, 8 and 9 year old kids who have Kindle Fire, and they absolutely love it. Their younger siblings enjoy the tablet just as much :) Also, if you considered buying an Ipad or an Ipad Mini for your child, Kindle Fire is half the price of an Ipad and has very similar capabilities.

Kindle Fire HD 7", HD Display, Wi-Fi, 8 GB (Previous Generation - 3rd)
Kindle Fire HD 7", HD Display, Wi-Fi, 8 GB (Previous Generation - 3rd)

Works with private and public wi-fi networks, huge library of Apps, fast web browsing, 16 GB internal memory, USB port for connection to a PC or Macintosh computer or to connect to the Kindle PowerFast charging accessory. Great tablet for kids ages 8, 9, 10 years old and older, if you are not ready to spend $450+ on the Ipad they have been asking for :) I own a Kindle Fire and absolutely love the ease of use of the device. Older kids will appreciate the great music player on Kindle Fire - the sound is excellent and you can buy and download full albums from Amazon in minutes. And with new Kindle FreeTime service, parents can limit kids' access to certain apps, videos, books, or other content on the tablet - learn more at Kindle Fire HD parental controls. A paid monthly subscription with unlimited access to the most popular age-appropriate books, games, educational apps, movies and TV shows is also available through Amazon ($4.99 per month or $2.99 per month for Amazon Prime Members). PLEASE NOTE: the Kindle Fire charger is not included in the box and is sold separately (see link below).

Best Tablet for Children ages 3 and up - LeapFrog LeapPad2 Explorer

LeapPad Explorer is an educational tablet for kids manufactured by LeapFrog. LeapPad 2 has a built-in camera and video recorder, pre-installed apps, and a big library of apps and games available for purchase. Children can use a finger, a stylus, or "turn, twist and shake the tablet for exciting motion-based play!" Great product with excellent parent reviews. Although the newest version of LeapPad, LeapPad Ultra, is available, I recommend LeapPad 2 which is significantly cheaper and has fewer system glitches. If having a web browser is important to you, LeapPad Ultra is worth considering, but you can buy a Kindle Fire HD for the same price...

LeapFrog LeapPad2 Power Learning Tablet, Green
LeapFrog LeapPad2 Power Learning Tablet, Green

Front and back cameras and video recorders, fast processor, library of 325+ downloadable apps and games, 4 GB onboard memory (just in case you are curious, whether 4 GB of memory is enough, here are some examples of LeapPad app sizes and prices - 72-minute Dora Video ($7.50) - 153 MB, Disney Tangled Game ($25) - 65 MB, Disney Fairies Ultra Ebook $20 (with games) - 119 MB, Kidz Bop 21 with 14 songs ($10) - 63 MB) . The LeapPad comes with 5 Apps - Learning Songs App (5 Songs Included), Pet Pad Writing App, Cartoon Creativity App, Art Studio App, and a Free App of your choice. Be sure to read some of the great customer reviews of the product (by clicking on the Blue Link above) and to watch the video below to see the #1 Award winning Learning tablet in action.

LeapPad 2

InnoTab 3s from VTech for Children ages 3 and up - with wi-fi and Internet browser

InnoTab Tablet is manufactured by VTech and in many ways is similar to LeapPad. One of the main advantages of InnoTab over LeapPad is that InnoTab has an SD card slot for memory expansion. Although I recommend LeapPad 2 over the newest version of LeapPad Ultra, I think InnoTab 3s is so far the best deal VTech has offered since they first introduced InnoTab tablet a few years ago. Although the device is still slower than LeapPad and the camera could be improved, the kids tablet does come with Kid-safe web browser and the price of the device is about half of the LeapFrog's newest toy...

VTech InnoTab 3S Kids Tablet, Pink
VTech InnoTab 3S Kids Tablet, Pink

Product Features from Amazon:

5" color touch screen and tilt-sensor for educational gameplay

E-books, educational games, creative activities, learning apps and more available on cartridge or as downloads from VTech learning lodge navigator website

Video player/recorder, photo viewer, MP3 player, e-reader, art studio, motion games, microphone

2 GB onboard memory and SD card slot for memory expansion

WiFi secure sync to download apps from VTech

The reviews of the product are very mixed. Some parents love the tablet, while others run into major product flaws and give it only 1-3 star reviews. Parents do seem to agree that VTech app library is excellent, with many educational games and the setup is fast and easy (when compared to LeapPad's setup).

Other Tablets with wi-fi

If you are an Apple fan, consider an iPad Mini or an iPod touch for older kids. Although Apple products are more expensive, they also last longer and give you a better overall user experience, plus you get access to thousands of free and inexpensive Apple apps.

Tablet for children ages 4 and under - VINCI 7-Inch Touchscreen Mobile Learning Tablet

Vinci product is significantly more expensive because it was designed for kids under age 4 with safety in mind: "VINCI Tab uses exclusively non toxic, medical and food grade materials for the handle and housing." Vinci Tablet features games, sing & dance and soothing songs, storybooks, and camera.
