Texas Lottery Winners

Updated on July 30, 2013

Texas Lottery Winners!

In November, 1992, the lottery came to Texas. For native Texans like myself, we had spent years reading about big lottery jackpots which we could not participate in. Instead, we were stuck with bingo and the occasional trip out of state to play games of change for big money.

Since it's humble beginning, the Texas Lottery has raised billions of dollars for education in the Lone Star State. What started with a simple Pick 6 game, has grown to multiple bi-weekly drawings including Lotto Texas, The Texas Two Step and hundreds of different scratch off games. With a successful marketing campaign and the chance to win millions, I have to admit I have been lured into playing the Texas Lottery regularly for a number of years.

Today, the Texas Lottery also includes Mega Millions and Powerball, two multi state lottery games with prizes that can reach into the hundreds of millions of dollars. Rather than playing just a single Texas Lotto game on Wednesday and Saturday, I now have four other games to separate me from my money!

The Texas Lottery has been one of the most successful lotteries in the US and has contributed billions towards public education.

Texas Lottery Historical Highlights

Proponents of lotteries love to talk about how successful a lottery can be. Texas has the numbers to back up the claim.

The Texas Lottery has contributed more than $12 Billion to public education since its inception in 1992.

Starting in 2010, the Texas Lottery will also contribute to the Fund for Veterans Assistance.

62% of all lottery proceeds are paid out to winners. 25% are paid to the school fund. The remainder goes to lottery retailers and the state general fund.

Janie Kallus, of Schulenburg, Texas won the first Lotto Texas jackpot, $21.8 million, in 1992.

The largest Texas Lotto jackpot was $85 million on March 7th, 2001.

Since February, 1997, Texas Lottery players have had the option to take their winnings in a lump sum rather than over a twenty year period.

May, 2001, Texas Two Step lottery starts in Texas with two weekly drawings.

April, 2002, Pick Three daily drawing lottery begins.

October 2003, Texas joins several other states in Mega Millions, a multi state lottery.

January, 2010, Texas joins the largest nationwide lottery in the US, Powerball

As with everything in Texas, the Lottery is big in the Lone Star State!

Texas Lotto

Know your Texas Lottery games!

When the Lotto came to Texas in 1992, this was the only game we could play. For many years, I was "on again, off again" playing and my biggest win was $80 on one set of numbers, but I have won $2, 10, 14 prizes as well. When Lotto Texas started, the initial prize was $3 million, but could grow larger each time there was not a winner (called a "roll").

Texas Lotto is the simple: pick 6 numbers between 1 and 54 (originally 50, but increased by 4 to create bigger jackpots). Get the right numbers in any order and win the jackpot! Two drawings a week, Wednesday and Saturday, with cash value option or annual annuity over 20 years.

The Texas Lotto now starts off with a top prize of $4 million and grows with each unsuccessful draw. Typically, I see the Lotto roll to about $12 million on a regular basis before someone wins it.

Strangely, some lotto customers won't play the Texas Lotto because that seems like too small of a prize amount. My favorite news story was reading about a school teacher who claimed that "3 million dollars is not enough to live off"! That is crazy as I would take three or four million bucks in a heart beat and believe me, I could live off it a long time!

Oh well, fewer players increases the odds for me!

Texas Mega Millions Lotto

Know your Texas Lottery games!

The multi state lottery game with big cash jackpots starting at $12 million! Pick 5 numbers from 1 to 56, then pick 1 Mega Ball number from 1 to 46, and don't forget to Megaply for $1 more to increase your winnings! Two drawings make this a fun game to play every week!

Mega Millions was a smaller "national" lotto compared to it's big brother, Powerball, when it joined the Texas Lottery. I played for awhile but was tempted away by the big dollars in Powerball and the better odds with the Texas Lotto.

Texas Powerball Lottery

Know your Texas Lottery games!

Powerball - the ultimate multi state, big jackpot game. With jackpots starting at $20 million, Powerball has captured the nation's imagination! Easy to play. Choose five numbers from 1 - 59 and one Powerball number from 1 - 39. Add a Powerplay for $1 and increase the jackpot - even with only 5 number matches, players with Powerplay can win up to $1 million!

Texas Lotto Texas Two Step

Know your Texas Lottery games!

Definitely a Texas twist on lotteries, Texas Two Step has winners dancing across the Lone Star State!

To play:

Step one - pick 4 numbers between 1 and 35.

Step two - pick 1 number between 1 and 35 for bonus ball.

Drawings are held twice a week and just matching the bonus ball alone nets players a cool $5 each time! Minimum jackpot of $200,000 paid in cash only!

I have played Two Step several times as the jackpot would make a big impact in my life of normal debts and expenses. I'm not greedy, I just want to win!

All or Nothing

The latest Texas Lotto game is called All or Nothing.

How it works: For $2, players pick 12 numbers and win if "All" their numbers are drawn or if "None" are drawn. Neat twist, huh?

The top prize is $250,000 and the game is played four times daily. Strangely, on June 10, 2013, the game was halted after a "glitch" was discovered which allowed the possibility the game could be rigged by certain players and numbers chosen. Reportedly, All or Nothing will be returning soon.

What games are played one which days?
