The Buchannon Legacy Chapter Two
Lawn Living at Its Finest!
Welcome back to the Buchannon Legacy Challenge! This is a Sims 4 Legacy featuring Cordelia Buchannon as its founder. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then you might want to start out by reading the Introduction. It's a good place for new readers to start and you can follow the introduction through all of the chapters by scrolling down to the bottom of the page and using the "Next" link to take you to the next chapter one by one.
If you've already been following this challenge, then I'm glad that you're still with me! I've had some problems with the scientist career crashing the game, but after updating my graphics drivers I've been able to continue playing successfully. Anyone having problems with this career track may feel free to contact me in the comments. If enough of you are struggling, I will create a tutorial page on how to deal with this issue. It does not appear to have been fixed in the first post-GTW patch!
You may recall from the previous chapter that my founder is Cordelia Buchannon, who is a cheerful genius who loves the outdoors. She had a whirlwind romance with Ishmael Leavitt (aka Hans from Frozen) and they were married in front of the library. Ishmael is a neat, family-oriented bookworm.
As you can guess from the above image, the family is still living on the lawn.
The next morning starts with Delia jumping out of bed to run to the toilet (which remains on the lawn). Her new job will be starting soon, and she has to deal with the typical needs, which include hunger, hygiene, and bladder. She's in such a hurry and now she's sick on her stomach! Thankfully it seems to pass quickly and not return until much later. She decides she'll be able to make it through the day, and commits herself to getting ready for work. Thank goodness for quickmeals!
I had to restart the game several times at this point, but each time produced the same results: She vomited first thing when she woke up, which without a pregnancy test is the best indication of early pregnancy. At this point, the family was flat broke and had nothing to speak of, so buying a pregnancy test was out of the question.
Careers can be tough, but it helps to know that you need to start the day by putting your sim in the best possible mood -- even if they don't have the correct "emotion." I started every day with food, toilet, and shower, in that order. Food fills them up but reduces bladder, bladder satisfies bladder but depletes hygiene. This is the logical order.
For the science career there isn't any shower that will make her "focused" and so she had a "thoughtful" shower so that she could have a breakthrough. This is the best I've found for science so far.
With her stomach relieved of its contents, Delia moves on with her morning. She has work to prepare for and she wants to head to work in the best possible mood. Since she and Ishmael are broke, she grabs a quickmeal from the fridge (since it came stocked with these!) and sits down on the bed to eat it. Afterward, she uses the potty and takes a "thoughtful" shower in the hopes of having a breakthrough before work.
Sometimes it's easier to get a breakthrough during work in the science career, but I think it's best to get at least one taken care of before heading to work or it will slow you down significantly. Even going to work with your sims, the promotions can be difficult to achieve and I prefer to work on the tasks rather than on the preparations.
After she is ready for work, Delia's still looking for one more breakthrough before she heads off to do her tasks for the day. In serious need of cash money and having only one available resource, she decides to plant the flower seeds that she obtained from the area behind the library the previous day.
This work is quickly done, but with no breakthroughs to be had in the process. Work begins immediately afterward.
According to Carl and Pam's Sims 4 Guide, gardening may be the best way to make money overall. It requires no financial output and can produce incredible dividends if you have somebody available to do the gardening on a regular basis. Since my plan is to keep Ishmael as a work-at-home author and father, he can help to balance the gardening load while producing best sellers (cross your fingers!) to bring in additional money.
Writing is my personal favorite way to make money, by the way!
The science lab is a bit overwhelming, with a lot of equipment that Delia doesn't know how to use. In order to improve at it, she's going to have to earn more logic skill.
Her first task of the day is to invent the Momentum Conserver. It's an easy enough invention and doesn't require her to have any remarkable parts to make it happen -- this is a good thing as she has nothing in her inventory to make this happen. What seeds she didn't plant, she sold for cash to stock the fridge.
I've done the first day of the science career a couple of times now (with some difficulty) and the tasks come up in different orders. Scientist sims are able to obtain materials for their inventions by asking their co-workers for these materials (including crystals, metals, and elements). If you're selling what you're asking for, this can become quite lucrative as well, without putting the work into digging for things.
The next task the job asks of Delia is easy: She has to turn on the Momentum Conserver. She does so immediately after putting it down on the floor of the science lab. It whirs and spins, but does little else. For a first invention, it's certainly not a bad little thing, more for entertainment than for any practical purpose.
I actually kind of like this little thing, and this is one easy step to getting toward the full bar for the day at work. Thanks to these steps, I didn't wind up having to extend the day when all was said and done, and that gave her more time to be at home afterward.
Next up, Delia has to experiment at the chemistry lab, so she puts her Momentum Conserver back into her inventory and sets to work on learning about the chemical combinations for her notebook. When it's finished, she hasn't learned anything special, which is disappointing, but she's one step closer to a promotion at the end of the day!
Ordinarily the sim seems to get something out of this process, such as discovering a new formula. I might not have let her continue to experiment for long enough for this as I was attempting to get her second breakthrough and make sure she had time to finish her tasks before the day's end (which would allow me to not have to extend the day by two hours).
The last serious task of the day for Delia (after chatting up some co-workers and getting herself something to eat) is to take care of the plants in the greenhouse. It has been an easy day for her for the most part, and she's already beginning to think that this job is a breeze. How could it be any easier than this! So she stops to water the plants, and harvests them along the way for some extra cash.
The gardening skill is pretty crucial for this legacy so that the sims can earn as much money as possible. I'm planning on making it a family skill and trying to keep the garden going through all of the generations of the legacy -- which will definitely be a huge challenge.
Ishmael will be doing most of the gardening at home, and I can set him to tend the garden while Delia is at work, but she's still going to be pulling her weight!
Delia leaves work on time and heads home to take a nap. She woke up too early in the morning so that she could be sick, so she needs a nap. While bookworm Ishmael reads his copy of his first children's book, she dozes on the bed until suppertime.
I try to time my sims' days so that they don't have to nap. As in real life, this can become a vicious cycle that never ends. If you can in your game, keep their routines as strict as possible, as it will help to maintain the job and income rate.
When Delia wakes up from her nap, she checks on the garden and then prepares dinner for her and Ishmael with their recently-filled fridge. Garden produce will eventually help her to keep the fridge better stocked, but for the time being, she's working to put food on the table.
A nice garden salad feeds her and her new husband, and they sit on the bed to chat and eat.
I like to start with low-skill food dishes to avoid any catastrophes in the cooking department. You may see to the right in the picture that I was able to purchase them an oven right from the beginning (by not purchasing an easel, presumably -- I didn't account for every simolean spent). My preference is not to use it until later because I don't want to burn down their... lawn?
Just before bed, Delia discovers that she has a little bit of a "bump." Even without a pregnancy test, it's official! She's pregnant and will give birth in about three sim days.
Congratulations to Delia and Ishmael!
What's your favorite way to make money in a legacy challenge?
Will Ishmael be able to kick off a writing career while Delia goes to work every day? How will the garden fare, and will it be enough to make the money the family needs to build a home? Will Delia continue to get promoted at work?
One last question: What do you think is the best way to start making money in a legacy?
Want to Play a Legacy?
I would love to be able to put together a list of Sims 4 Legacy Challenge links on my main page for the Buchannons. It would be amazing if you were to join me in playing through one of these games, but in order to do that, you'll need to have a copy of The Sims 4. My opinion is that this is the best game in the series so far and I am loving Get to Work, even with all of its flaws.
