How the Hess Trucks Began

It all came about in 1964 when founder Leon Hess had an idea of a Christmas toy truck that would be fun for the family at a low cost.

The very first Hess toy was a tanker truck that could be filled with water and had a working hose. Anyone could purchase the compnay "green and white" toy for $1.29 at any of their gas stations. Parents loved this toy because of its low price, and that it already came with batteries.

Some of the holiday toy trucks from Hess have been big rigs that came with an airplane, fire engine, space shuttle, helicopter, front end loader, camper, race car, van, motorcycle or even a snazzy police car. All favorites and highly collectible.

One of my favorite things about this seasonal toy is the great television commercials they have made throughout the years. Part of our local fun was their participation in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade watching the Hess Truck float.

Each year the arrival of the trucks brought even more excitement. There was a rush to get to the Hess stations for the newest holiday truck. I can remember the stations near us running out, and leaving disappointed, because we didn't get the best toy of the season.

Ever since, the Hess Trucks have made it into the holiday traditions of many homes, making it a favorite toy for boys and girls of all ages.

The very first Hess Truck toy made its way into the hearts of people with this model, Christmas of 1964.

It was equipped with flashing lights and fillable tank. This green and white toy vehicle displayed the name of the company HESS boldly on its body, and so has every truck since for almost 50 years.

Can't Wait ...

Tell the kids ... Don't worry ... it's coming!

Give the kids something to look forward to while building excitement for their new toy Hess truck on Christmas morning or on that special occasion.

I can still picture it. When word came out that "the new HESS trucks are here" the police had to direct the traffic, because it was backed up a mile down the highway.

As we approached the station, I remember seeing the new Hess Truck boxes stacked in the gas station windows. They were piled as high as the ceiling. Attendants were selling more toy trucks than gasoline.

Be a part of the Hess Truck family tradition by getting started with your new Hess Toy this year.

@TreasuresBrenda: It's popular on the East Coast but I guess not in Canada, so I'm not surprised that you haven't seen it. Cool trucks though. Parents love that they always come with batteries (new ones that is).
