Best Toys For a 4 Year Old Boy

Updated on December 5, 2016

What to buy a 4 year old boy?

Looking to buy the best toys for 4 year old boys? This article gives lots of gift ideas based upon the toys my own 4 year old boy loves. He will often play for hours building with toys such as legos and building blocks. Another highly recommended gift for a 4 year old boy is a marble run. Build the run and then have fun running marbles down the construction (see below for details).

Boys of 4 years will also become immersed in toys which facilitate imaginative play (from superheros to cash registers!) A four year old will also be starting school soon, so there are lots of educational toys which will help give them a great head start. Arts and crafts toys are another popular idea. One of my son's favorite toys has been a box full of crafts from which he has enjoyed making all kinds of creatures and pictures. There are also some great new and popular toys for 2014. Look out for the dinosaur transformer toys, the lego juniors set and leapfrog tablet featured below. Keep reading for great gift ideas on the best toys for a 4 year old boy many of which my son received for his 4th birthday.

Top Toys for 4 Year Old Boys

Marble Genius Marble Run Super Set - 100 Complete Pieces + Free Instruction App (85 Translucent Marbulous Pieces + 15 Glass Marbles)
Marble Genius Marble Run Super Set - 100 Complete Pieces + Free Instruction App (85 Translucent Marbulous Pieces + 15 Glass Marbles)

Marble runs are a really fun toy which is recommended for 4 years and above and will keep 4 year old boys occupied for hours.

You build marble runs using the equipment and then have fun running marbles down them. Adults can get involved too by helping out. In fact you may find the adults enjoying themselves as much as the child.

My son absolutely loved his marble run at age 4. He used to need a bit of help building more complex structures but loved running marbles down the structures afterwards.

Lego Gifts for 4 Year Old Boys

Lego is a classic toy that you know is good as it has stood the test of time. Many 4 year old boys love building and construction sets are a must have toy. My own 4 year old son loves lego and will play with it for hours. He received the a big bucket of lego (a lot like the one featured below) for his 4th birthday. So far we have built cars, vehicles, houses, a windmill and a boat together. He also comes up with his own (sometimes strange!!) creations from his imagination including creatures, long vehicles and buildings. There are also some great mini sets, some of which are featured below including a monster trucks set and a fire engine set. It will help develop fine motor skills, problem solving and concentration skills when building from lego sets. A great toy for adults and boys to work on together.

4 year olds are not too old for the bigger lego duplo sets too. Check out the Jake and the Neverland Pirate set below.

LEGO Classic Medium Creative Brick Box 10696
LEGO Classic Medium Creative Brick Box 10696

This creative bucket set includes 484 elements with bricks in over 35 different colors. They include decorated eye bricks and wheels. There's also an easy-to-follow building instruction booklet full of inspirational ideas or why not try your own creations.

LEGO DUPLO Jakes Pirate Ship Bucky 10514(Discontinued by manufacturer)
LEGO DUPLO Jakes Pirate Ship Bucky 10514(Discontinued by manufacturer)

My nephew who's just turned 4 loves Jake and the Neverland Pirates. But whether you're a Jake fan or not, most 4 year olds will love this lego set.

It features a canon that fires, a lookout tower which rotates and a palm tree, treasure chest and shovel. 4 year old should be able to help build the set and maybe some of it on their own. There is lots of scope for imaginative play once the set is built.

LEGO Juniors 10672 Batman: Defend the Bat Cave
LEGO Juniors 10672 Batman: Defend the Bat Cave

This batman set is part of the lego juniors range which has just been launched.

The junior lego sets are designed to be easy build sets for ages 4 to 7. They make great first lego sets and many 4 year olds will love the superhero theme. They come with age appropriate instructions too.

The batman set features 3 minifigures (Batman, the Joker and Robin.) It also features the Bat cave, The Joker's catapult and the Batmobile. It makes a great set to play with after you've finished building it.

Stomp Rocket Junior Glow kit

Stomp Rocket Ultra Rocket, 4 Rockets [Packaging May Vary]
Stomp Rocket Ultra Rocket, 4 Rockets [Packaging May Vary]

4 year old boys are guaranteed to love a stomp rocket. Stamp on the launch pad and see how high you can launch the rocket into the air. We have one of these toys and it's great family fun too. Our son will play with it for ages and my husband and I have both enjoyed seeing how high we can launch the rocket as well.

Stomp on the pad and a blast of air propels the Stomp Rocket over 200 feet!

Popular toys for 4 year old boys - Cars, Cars and More Cars!

4 year old boys love cars and here are some popular ideas:

A simple remote control car - a popular present for a four year old boy and for other people in the family to enjoy.

Hot wheels cars - My own son loves simple hot wheels cars too - he can never have enough of them.

Car playsets - the Take Apart Roadster is one idea - use the battery powered tool to take the roadster apart. and then put it back together again.

Fisher-Price My Easy RC Vehicle
Fisher-Price My Easy RC Vehicle

This is an easy to use first remote control car.

There's four arrows to press to turn the car in the right directions (forward, backwards, left and right).

There are 2 control settings beginner and expert.

The car also has an auto shut off features. I can't begin to tell you how useful this is. There are so many times the batteries in our remote control car have been drained because we forget to turn it off. You won't have that problem with this car.

Battat Take-A-Part Vehicle Roadster (Old Model)
Battat Take-A-Part Vehicle Roadster (Old Model)

Kids will play with this for hours, taking the car apart and putting it back together again with the drill.

Cool Toys for 4 Year old Boys - Racing Tracks and Vehicle Playsets

Another great toy families can play with together are cars on racing tracks. Boys can race their parents, brothers or sisters and friends. Car tracks are good fun for adults and children.

If your looking for car based toys for a 4 year old boy, you should also check out the many hot wheels products that are popular with this age group. My own son loves the hot wheels cars and tracks.

Hot Wheels Track Builder Spiral Stack Up Builds Up To 30 Inches High 1 Car Included
Hot Wheels Track Builder Spiral Stack Up Builds Up To 30 Inches High 1 Car Included

My son would love this.

Build a spiral race track or a race track in a different configuration. There's lots of ways to build the track which is great for creativity.

Once it's built have lots of fun launching the cars down the track. It includes a hot wheel car so you can start enjoying the fun straight away.

Mindscope Neo Tracks Twister Tracks 258 Flexible Track System
Mindscope Neo Tracks Twister Tracks 258 Flexible Track System

This is a cool car track which you can build in all kinds of different ways. It comes with a motorised car you can use on the track once it's been built. There's 11 feet of track (258 pieces) and includes bridges, tunnels, smash doors and more.

Educational toys for 4 year olds

There are lots of educational toys for 4 year olds to help them learn letters, numbers, phonics, problem solve, improve fine motor skills, create and to read and write. Check out a selection below.

LeapFrog Scribble and Write
LeapFrog Scribble and Write

The Scribble and Write toy is a great toy to introduce boys to writing and help develop fine motor skills. You start of by tracing different shapes and then move onto letters and they enjoy using it too.

VTech Kidizoom Spin and Smile Camera, Blue
VTech Kidizoom Spin and Smile Camera, Blue

My son was given a camera for his 4th birthday and he loved it! It was actually really interesting to see the kinds of things he took photos of.

We had the Vtech Kidizoom camera, which he loved.

Kids can take photos. They can edit them with special effects. The camera also features a voice recording feature with 5 different voice changing effects, movie taking, stop frame animation.

These cameras will withstand most play that 4 year old will throw at it. Unless they decide to put it into water - this will break them - I've learned from experience!!

More Learning Toys

There are tons of learning toys for 4 year olds and my own 4 year old is really keen to learn through play so I am taking advantage of this time!

The Mindware Imaginets is a fab idea of a learning toy - check it out below.

You could also consider DVDs, books and learning resources that will help a four year old boys start to read. They make learning fun and will give a four year old a great head start at school.

My own son loves playing on iphones and tablets (when he is allowed!) and there are lots of educational apps you can get. If you don't like the idea of a 4 year old on an expensive phone or tablet another idea is to get them a tablet of their own. Many tablets include a camera and video camera too.

MindWare Imagination Patterns
MindWare Imagination Patterns

Take the challenge and see if you can use the shapes to create the pictures on the 50 design boards. This is great for developing problem solving as well as visual and spatial awareness.

More Construction Toys

I'm always on the look out for construction toys for my 4 year old boy as these are the toys he plays with the longest and the most. The great thing about construction toys is that they're not always about construction. They are about being creative and using the imagination as well. My 4 year old will spend as long playing with what he has built as he does building it. Below are a couple more building toys which facilitate being creative and imaginative as well.

Kid K'Nex blocks

Kid K'Nex blocks make a great construction toy. 4 year old boys can build lots of different creatures and constructions and then play with them. Put on puppet shows or create role play scenarios with the Kid Knex set. Each set has lots of different building ideas that come with the toy and can be copied. Or make your own constructions from your imagination. The pieces are big and easy for small hands to manipulate. It is also spans several age ranges and there are reviews on Amazon that say brothers and sisters also enjoy the toy. This is another toy that has been extremely popular with my own son. He loves building all kinds of creatures, showing me them and then playing some kind of imaginary game.

KID K’NEX – Build A Bunch Set – 66 Pieces – For Ages 3+ Construction  Educational Toy (Amazon Exclusive), packaging may vary
KID K’NEX – Build A Bunch Set – 66 Pieces – For Ages 3+ Construction  Educational Toy (Amazon Exclusive), packaging may vary

The set above has 66 pieces including personality parts like eyes, curlies, big wheels and more.

There is instructions for 30 models - vehicles, bugs, animals, undersea creatures and more.

Gears, Gears, Gears

The unique thing about Gears, Gears, Gears, is that you make constructions with moving parts. My son played with these the other day (funnily enough at a museum we visited). He immediately went from being very noisy to very quiet as he tried to work out how all the parts moved together and build his construction.

The imagination is the limit as to what kinds of things you can buid. Some ideas inclued caterpillars, a rolling race car, a robot, a rollercoast, a spinning flower or a construction site.

Arts and Crafts Toys

Another idea are arts and crafts toys. My own 4 year old boy received a craft box for Christmas and this has been a huge hit. He has spent ages making all kinds of things from lollipop sticks, googly eyes, stickers, felt sheets, pens, glue, glitter, string and lots more bits and pieces. A craft box makes a really nice gift for boys who enjoy making and creating. My son delights in showing us what he's made after. I just left my son to his own devices to make things rather than following the ideas that come with our craft box.

If you're looking for arts and crafts toys, check out this article on craft kits for boys

Batman Toys

Fisher-Price Imaginext DC Super Friends, Batmobile with Lights
Fisher-Price Imaginext DC Super Friends, Batmobile with Lights

I've just bought this Imaginext batmobile for my 4 year old nephew's birthday.

Apparently once he'd opened all his toys, it was the first one he wanted to play with and he loves it.

The batmobile features lights and a bat disk launcher, so kids can press the buttons and watch the disks fly. The batman figure sits inside the car too.

Best Toys For 4 Year Old Boys who Like Dinosaurs

There are tons of dinosaur toys for this age group.

I love the Vtech Switch and Go Dino featured below - it easily transforms from a dino to a vehicle and back again and features over 50 wild sound effects and phrases. It also tells you dino facts.

Other ideas include dinosaur books, playsets, excavation kits and lots more.

Vtech Switch and Go Dinosaur

VTech Switch & Go Dinos - Sliver the T-Rex Dinosaur
VTech Switch & Go Dinos - Sliver the T-Rex Dinosaur

The Switch and Go dinosaur transforms from a dinosaur to a vehicle and back again. It also features over 50 wild sound effects and phrases

The LCD screen plays cool dinosaur and driver animations too.

Best Outdoor Toys for 4 Year Old Boys

My son loves playing outside and his favorite toys are a trampoline like the one featured below and his scooter.

However, I couldn't resist featured the Step2 Extreme Rollercoaster below. It looks like such a cool toy, if I had knew about it when his birthday came around I may have purchased it instead of the trampoline.

Skywalker Trampolines Mini Bouncer with Enclosure Net – Kids Trampoline – Added Safety Features – Meets or Exceeds ASTM – Made to Last – 40-inch, 48-inch, 60-inch
Skywalker Trampolines Mini Bouncer with Enclosure Net – Kids Trampoline – Added Safety Features – Meets or Exceeds ASTM – Made to Last – 40-inch, 48-inch, 60-inch

For my son's 4th birthday we bought him a trampoline and it was one of the most used gifts we've ever bought him.

He loves bouncing up and down on it. He used it everyday at first and although the novelty has now worn off he still goes on it quite a lot especially in the warmer weather. It's also a big hit when his friends and cousins come round.

Step2 Extreme Coaster
Step2 Extreme Coaster

The non slip ramp makes it easy for kids to push the step 2 rollercoaster up to the top, improving strength and co-ordination.

Then they will have fun racing down!

More Gift Ideas

Other ideas great toy ideas for 4 year old boys include superhero toys (batman is a huge favorite in our house - see the batmobile above for an idea). Also my son loved anything angry birds. Not all 4 year olds play angry birds but if they do there are lots of toys including games and sticker books.

At 4 years old my son also went mad for activity books. He loved doing dot to dots, mazes, coloring and stickers.

Another one of my son's most used gifts is a scooter. I have also written a guide to buying scooters for 4 year olds based on the criteria I considered when buying a scooter.

BLACK+DECKER Junior Deluxe Tool Set with Toolbox - 42 Piece Tools & Accessories [Amazon Exclusive]
BLACK+DECKER Junior Deluxe Tool Set with Toolbox - 42 Piece Tools & Accessories [Amazon Exclusive]

I have two nephews (one who's 3 and another just 4) who both love playing with their tool sets.

They will spend hours pretending to fix things.

This tool set looks really cool. It has 42 pieces which also includes a "kid powered" mechanical drill with interchangeable drill bits.

There's is also a buildable tool box as a project to complete.

A four-year old boy is going to enjoy a well-made tricycle (before this age they really don't "get" the purpose of the pedals) and he will find a thousand uses for a little red wagon.

My son is three and a half and I wish I could keep him in toys like this. Right now he is more interested in my cell phones, computers and electronics kit. While this is great, I have had to put a lock on my office door. Bought him Lego and he told me they were for babies!! Sheese. :-)

@HealthyBodee LM: Have you tried lego or other construction toys? At the moment lego would be the toy my 4 year old son plays with the most. He will literally play with lego for at least an hour at times (sometimes longer) and will ask to get it out almost everyday. Kinnex and marble runs are also ones he will play with for a long time. We have also just bought him galt Connecta straws (I will update the article to feature this) and he loves them at the moment. Have been an excellent buy - cheap and plays with them lots. Arts and crafts also keep him occupied and he really enjoys doing different activities. I have found its good to have a variety of toys that you rotate to keep their interest high. You don't have to spend lots, there's lots of great second hand deals about. For example you can get good deals on second hand lego at ebay. Also, sometimes getting down on the floor with them and playing with the toys with them shows them new ways to play. Actually the whole of my family have become a bit addicted by lego at times! Also, I've found quite often that the toys that they don't initially seem attracted to end up coming out a couple of months down the line and they can't get enough of them. You're quite right though - all kids are different - they do say that you buy a kid an expensive toy and quite often they'll play with the cardboard box!

I bought my sons similar toys as above that they thought they wanted, but in actual fact, they played with them very little. I found that a torch or a simple gadget kept them happy for hours.... could be just my kids!

Along with the lego's little ones love the matchbox or hot wheel cars. These toys also grow up with the little boy as they add to their collection. Hot wheels are also easy to take along on visits to the doctor or to grandma's house. Loved the lens.
