With the game rating 8/10 for, 4/5 on Common Sense Media, 4.8/5 on Critical Review and 5 Star rating on, I decided to check it out myself and boy, this game is awesome. And before I continue with this critical review, I just want to point out that this is the best mobile multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game I have played, and of course still playing.

For those of you who haven't played the game before and for those who has but want to know more about the game, then this review will help you understand every bit of the mobile-friendly game.

What is the game?

Vainglory is a MOBA video game developed and published by Super Evil Megacorp for both the iOS and Android devices. The development of the game started in 2012, and it was first released for the iOS devices on November 16, 2014, then the Android version was released, July 2, 2015.

The game is a simplified version of the PC-based MOBA genre but with more original and innovative concepts tailored around making it a feel of the main video game experience but on mobile. The game's engine has been designed for intense battles with 60 FPS, no joystick required but with top-notch touch controls (sub-30ms control responsiveness).

One of the amazing features of the game is the number of heroes available in the game, and although at first, the game had just ten characters, the developers of the game continually add new heroes, and as of 1st May 2017, there are 30+ heroes available in the gameplay.

There are three categories for the heroes: Captain, Carry, and Jungler.

Captains are also known as Roam and are the most skilled heroes, they support the team and are leaders of the group, and they call the shots and decide on the most important objective. Carriers are effective from a distance and do lots of damages too. While Junglers are known to rotate around their jungle and fight best when the battle gets harder.

How do you play it?

As you get set to start play, you'll discover that Vainglory is a three versus three action game divided into two different part: Brawl and Classic.

The Brawl mode simply gives you a shorter gaming experience with lots of action, fun, and excitement.

The Classic mode is a longer version of the gameplay with more difficult challenges that require strategies and tactics in order to win.

You can either launch the game alone and meet other persons online, play, win and have fun, or you can invite friends, team up and battle against other teams, this is where the real fun lies. It is even played on Twitch.

The game is all about a grand battle between two teams made up of three players on each sides controlling individual avatar, known as a "hero." Each team has its own base, and each base protects a huge crystal which is known as the "Vain." Between each team's bases is a long pathway called a "Lane," and the turret towers are mounted to take down enemies trying to get into the base. The objective of the game as a player is to destroy the enemy turrets and then get to the "Vain Crystal" in the enemy team's base. When a team destroys the enemy's Vain, that team wins the game.

You’re rewarded for both strategy and teamwork in the game. The game plays really fast and feels great too for a mobile game. Given the popularity of the game, at first, I was wondering what was the storyline behind it. But the fact is, it doesn't actually need one. The gaming experience still remains impressive and enjoyable.

Different Modes

Vainglory offers real-time MOBA battles both with and against live players or bots. One amazing thing about this gaming feature is that whether you’re ranking up with your guild or all you want is just a five-minute play session, Vainglory has a gameplay style that'll suit you.

Guilds and Team

Being able to play this game with someone else especially if the person is really good, is one of the sweetest aspects of this game. Whenever you need someone to play it with, all you have to do is search in the Guild Finder; it simply matches you up with someone at your skill level. You can create a team and start ranking as a group, or you keep playing with your Guild in order to earn more rewards.

Chests and Rewards

Version Update 1.18.0 saw the introduction of "Chests" which is a great way to collect in-game currencies; chests are made available after completing a certain action and helps in unlocking amazing tiered rewards like skins, heroes, etc. Finding Mystery Keys also helps in obtaining bonuses and opportunities to get huge payouts.

32 Playable Characters & Heroes skins

That is definitely a lot of characters to select from, and this feature allows you pick from the list, a hero who fits your play style. As you keep practicing you'll discover a particular hero who you're simply perfect with and don't worry there's a lot to go round. The heroes’ skin, you can select just about any too, and this can be gotten either through cards or by purchasing it with cash after converting your money into ice, which is the in-game currency.

Touch Controls Designed for Mobile

Critics appreciated the quality of the graphics, stating that it was impressive and Vainglory won the 'Best Mobile Game' at the 2016 Global Mobile Awards owing to this fact too. The Design is super responsive, simple and with a map that is easily navigated yet effective and thrilling.

Worldwide Competitive Esports & an Active Community

Vainglory has a global community in over 17 different languages, with active competitive nodes in several locations around the world. With seasonal tournaments and live esports events, the community continues to increase and it is not that weird since this is one of the most populair MOBA games that exist for mobile phones.
