Vintage Barbie Collectibles

A few years ago Barbie became fifty! Some Barbie dolls are now vintage, and many are collectible. Now, Barbie dolls are issued in limited editions for such things as the millennium.

In the beginning it was just Barbie and Ken. Now, there are a myriad of friends. This allows more dolls to be issued. Yet, Barbie has become a collectible, at least some older and rarer editions.

Today, Barbie has transportation and a house. In the future how many Barbie related items will be considered collectible? That cannot be answered, but wait long enough and almost anything can become rare enough to be collected.

Be Careful

Only some Barbie dolls are collectible. And those are worth much more if they are still in the box, and complete with everything that was issued with the box. It is easy to go to the thrift store and think this is a great bargain. We once found about ten different Barbie dolls locked in a display case in a thrift store with what looked like great prices. We have long ago learned to check collectibles with which we are not familiar, so we went home and looked up the prices. Fortunately, we did not buy the dolls, or it would have been a loss.

NIB is short for NEW IN BOX. Unless this is how a Barbie is being sold, beware. Collectors want new in box dolls, not nice but used and placed back in a box dolls.

On eBay, many sellers have empty boxes for sale, so someone could buy a box and add the doll to it. The doll may not be the right issue. But the price goes up in the bidding. Avoid this trap.

As with any collectible, a great price guide that also shows such information as the number released and years of release is invaluable.

Barbie Dolls on Coins

The Perth Mint produced a beautiful, colorized Barbie coin to celebrate the 50th anniversary.

But, Not All Barbie Dolls Are Collectible

Many Barbie Dolls, even older ones, are not collectible. Some are less desirable because of the condition of the dolls Others are just too plentiful. Always check the value before buying, unless you just like a particular doll. It is like other areas of collectibles, some have higher value and others have little.

How can anyone go wrong with a Barbie doll? That's what I've always thought. Never knew that they weren't all collectible.

I still have memories of playing Barbies with my friends. My Barbie had a set of wigs. I was the envy of all my friends.
