Vintage Aprons: Look Cute & Classy While Cooking & Cleaning!
Fun and Flirty Old-Fashioned Aprons
Vintage aprons are cute and fun as well as functional items to use and display in the kitchen. Featured here are dozens of gorgeous, vintage and new aprons that you can buy or just look at and drool over. You will also find books and sewing patterns for making your own aprons, links to websites that sell vintage fabrics, books on collecting aprons, gifts and books for children and other nostalgic goodies!
You might find kitchen aprons anywhere from the stylish 1930s to the funky 1970s on this popular lens (my apron selection varies day to day). There are several styles of old aprons here including country and shabby chic aprons made from a variety of materials such as organdy, organza, oilcloth, flour sacks, cotton and silk. I also included a section that features plus-size aprons and vintage aprons for men, and sewing patterns for men's and women's aprons.
Aprons are not just utilitarian anymore, but they are very stylish and collectible. Many aprons were handmade a long time ago from feed sacks, tattered dresses or old fabric scraps. I hope you enjoy this lens, and I would love to hear from you, so if you have a moment, please sign my guest book.
Vintage Organza Aprons on eBay - Dress Up Any Old Outfit with an Organza Apron
For those of you who might not know, organza is a light-weight, sheer fabric with a bit of a shimmer to it and is very pretty and feminine! Aprons made of organza are not meant to be workhorses, but are more for making you look and feel pretty and fashionable! Vintage organza aprons are very collectible. I never wear mine, I just like to display them on a peg board wall in my kitchen.
Why I Like Old Aprons
Old kitchen aprons are special to me for several reasons! I love the pretty colors and lively prints on the fabrics from which many
vintage aprons are made, and the warm, cozy vision I have in my mind of a gray-haired grandmother (yes, I know, not all grandmothers have gray hair) sewing the perfect apron from scraps of fabric held together with stitches that might have been sewn on an old treadle sewing machine or by gentle hands.
I think the main reason I am drawn to these adorable vintage aprons is because of the memories dancing in my mind of my own grandmother wearing her homemade aprons while she cooked delicious, southern-style meals while I stood tip-toed snooping through her kitchen drawers digging through the piles of aprons she had made. The wonderful aroma from those tasty casseroles and scrumptious deserts filling the air made my tummy growl and made me impatient for supper to be served. I remember my grandmother laughing at me as I twirled around in the kitchen wearing one of her aprons that hung almost to my ankles.
I loved my grandmother dearly, and I still giggle every time I think of her wearing a frilly kitchen apron, bouffant wig and horn-rimmed glasses!
Vintage Organdy Aprons on eBay - Flirty Aprons in Lightweight, Whispery Fabric
Organdy aprons are made from a sheer, feminine fabric, and they look beautiful hanging around in an old farmhouse kitchen or Victorian kitchen. Heck, these little cuties look great anywhere and can turn a drab home into a very romantic one.
Glamorous, Red Apron with Sequins - Putting on this apron will surely make you forget why you put it on.
What girl doesn't need to wear sequins while cooking? This is one of the most unique aprons I've seen, and I've seen lots of aprons! I’m not sure if I would want to cook while wearing this beauty, but I might wear it while eating an elegant dinner I pretended to cook!
Hand washing your vintage aprons and linens preserves the colors and extends the life of delicate fabrics.

My Thoughts on Vintage Floursack Aprons
What We Call "Upcycling" Was Once a Necessity
I absolutely adore old, tattered floursack aprons! I have a few aprons that my grandmother made out of her flour sacks and feed sacks many years ago. Poor people and thrifty people made clothing, pillows, aprons, quilts and no telling what else out of the cloth sacks their flour and feed came in.
Books on Collecting Vintage Aprons
These books are for the true Vintage Apron Junkie....like me! Some of these books would look nice on a coffee table for that homey vintage feel in a living room...or on a porch...or in a kitchen...or anywhere.
HOW DID aprons go from being an indispensable part of a woman's workaday wardrobe to an American icon to a sweet scrap of collectible nostalgia to one of the hottest sew-crafting trends going?
Frilly, lacy, sweet, and sexy--aprons defined a generation of happy housewives and hostesses. Today these filmy, finely home-crafted garments are sentimental favorites, evoking memories of Mom, Grandmom, or some other Doris Day-like image of domesticity, and they are highly sought-after by designers and collectors of household linens. Over 200 aprons are featured in this beautiful book, accompanied by detail shots that highlight design elements, stitching, and embellishments. Separate sections are devoted to gingham, floral designs, rickrack, handkerchief aprons, plaids and stripes, and polka dots. Aprons with embroidery, crochet, tatting, lace, and cross-stitching are examined in detail, and a collection of vintage apron patterns is included.
Includes a collector's price guide. (Paperback)
One of many great customer reviews:
"This is the apron bible!Great stories. Wonderful photos. And more information then thought possible! As a big time apron collector now I can research my finds." (Hardcover)
Which apron do you remember-the flowery one with the big pockets where Grandma kept the peppermints.
Books on Sewing Vintage-Syle Aprons - Aprons are really fun and easy to make....and fun to wear!
The last two books featured in this module are not exclusively for aprons, but they do have instructions for making aprons along with other "functional" patterns such as wall organizers, pillows and tote bags. The last one is a good book for the beginner sewer since it includes simple and inspiring patterns.
Thinking of Making Your Own Vintage-Style Apron?
Upcycling used items into aprons is lots of fun!

A Fun Idea for Wearing Aprons
Halloween is a great time to tie on a short frilly apron! Instead of buying a costume this year, you could dress up as a "Retro Housewife". Wear a vintage-style dress, put on some stilettos, a short half apron and fishnet stockings. Carry around your trick-or-treat bag in one hand and a pink feather duster in the other and off you go! Use your imagination and have fun!
