What To Do When Bored

Updated on May 6, 2016

Are You Bored? Need Some Ideas On What To Do?

We've all be there, nothing to do and no fresh ideas. If that's you, trying to figure out what to do when bored, then you came to the right place. Here I'll share with you some fun and creative ideas to get you out of the funk.

When boredom strikes, you cannot give in, you have to think outside of the box; you must shake off the dark cloud looming overhead. I really like this quote because it's one that is so full of insight and inspiration, it's to the point, and it reminds me that it's actually quite silly to feel blasé.

"I'm bored' is a useless thing to say. I mean, you live in a great, big, vast world that you've seen none percent of. Even the inside of your own mind is endless, it goes on forever, inwardly, do you understand? The fact that you're alive is amazing, so you don't get to say 'I'm bored." ~ Louis C.K.

The point is that while boredom is common, you shouldn't let it fester... do something about it. Get up, go out, do something, anything. Here are some ideas and tips for those people who want to know what to do when they're feeling down and out.

And if you find this article helpful, please share it.

Boredom Therapy Starts With A Laugh

Before you go any further, stop, take a breath, and let Louis make you laugh a little. It could be worse.

Learn How To Make A Paracord Bracelet - This is one of the funnest crafts that you can learn

By now you've probably seen people wearing or selling paracord bracelets (aka Survival Bracelets). These bracelets look so cool and are inexpensive and easy to make. The thing I like about paracord crafting is that its not messy, and the projects you make take no time at all so you're able to enjoy the fruits of your labor relatively quickly.

There are literally hundreds of different paracord colors and styles you can choose from, which make creating something totally unique really simple. From awesome camouflage in various color combinations to reflective cord, you will never find a shortage of creative ways to make something your own. Then there are buckle options, like plastic side release buckles to steel shackles like the one pictured here; some have whistles and others are reflective.

Some people are afraid to start making their own because they believe (falsely) that its too difficult. Nothing could be further form the truth. Basic paracord bracelets are nothing more than repeating a square knot over and over. Of course there are many more weaves, patterns and designs that you use, but start out simple and you'll quickly realize why this is a new crafting sensation.

Here is a great tutorial on how to make a paracord bracelet that will walk you through it step by step with simple photos and instructions. Many people prefer using the simple knot and loop (traditional) paracord design, but later you can start adding buckles, beads, and other creative additions to your work. As you do advance, be sure to check out these paracord bracelet instructions for ideas on more advanced paracord bracelet weaves.

Make A Popsicle Stick Bomb When You're Bored

Boredom doesn't have a chance with these crazy popsicle stick contraptions

The stick bombs have been keeping people busy years. No matter what your age is, everyone loves to watch these stick bombs going off (especially the long, intrinsic chain bombs). They are so simple to make, and very cheap; the Popsicle sticks can be purchased in bulk at your dollar store or hobby shop, or online here at Amazon really cheap (1,000 sticks for $12).

Making them, as you can see in the photo, is so simple. That's not the challenge. The challenge is to build something crazier, wilder, bigger than anyone else's. Here's a picture tutorial on how to make these Cobra Weave Exploding Stick Bombs, and below is a video of the world champion using over 2,000 sticks!

Apparently they call this the cobra weave due to the way the sticks stand up as they're exploding... looking similar to a cobra snake. One thing is sure, they are loads of fun and no one who is watching them explode will be left without a smile on their faces.

When designing yours, think about props and location... these are truly amazing projects that everyone will love.

Follow These Dragon Origami Instructions And Impress - Learn How To Make Dollar Bill Origami

You will also impress everyone around you the next time you flop down a cool dollar bill in the shape of a butterfly, that you just happen to whip up in a minute. I'm also including instruction links here for dragon origami, but there is so much more!

From airplanes to animals to buildings, once you get started with dollar bill origami (or any of it) you'll fall in love with it. If you're ever asked about Origami you can tell them that it has its origin in early 1st or 2nd century China, but it's name is strictly Japanese. The word we know is based on the Japanese "Ori" (for folding) and "kami" (for paper).

But back to the topic, how to make dollar bill origami. Once you've mastered the more basic designs and get a feel for the dimensions and folding techniques you'll realize that there isn't as much to it as it might seem. Start with making a dollar bill origami, the butterfly.

There's a great site,, that is a great resource for learning how to master the craft. Here's a link to their guide to make dollar bill origami.

Imagine The Smell Of Fresh Pumpkin Bread Muffins - When Bored Head To The Kitchen

Want to fire up your senses? Hop to the kitchen and make some of these mouth watering pumpkin bread muffins! There's nothing that will spark a smile like warm goodies straight from the oven... and a great cup of coffee.

Its been shown that the smell of food (good food) has a positive effect on our mood and spirits, so rather than munch on that bag of chips, make something that everyone in your house will love. Recipes like this are relatively quick and easy, so there's no stress involved.

This recipe uses mostly common ingredients that you already have, other than the canned pumpkin, which you can pick up anywhere. Not only are you making something wonderful, you're taking your mind off of the negativity that is boredom.

Head over here to check out the simple (but delicious) pumpkin bread recipe with canned pumpkin. There are lots of food related ideas you can use when you're bored. Have you ever thought of smoking meat? It's not something that you're going to jump right up and do (unless you have some ribs and a smoker handy), but take this time to learn something new, and make plans to do new things. Perhaps it's time for you to get a smoker and start smoking ribs yourself. Here's a great article that will teach you everything you need to learn how to smoke ribs.

Learn How To Build A House Of Cards - Fight Boredom - The Only Limitation Is Your Creativity

How can something so simple be so fun? And we're not talking about a 4 card shack, either. Most of us who don't routinely build card houses have no idea what people are doing. This first image is an amazing example. Hop over to Card Houses and take a look at the many types of structures he's created... it's amazing really, what you can do if you're determined and have the time.

Those who build lot's of card houses and other structures say you should work with cards that are not brand new (yea, we just happen to have 1,000 nicely worn cards laying around) so that they don't slip and slide as much. So the quick (and cheap) answer is to buy the cheapest cards you can find, they'll have a less refined finish and therefore will slip considerably less.

Since you're here because you were bored, don't settle for no basic square hut... go big or go home. Grabs some cards and challenge yourself, see if you can create something new or build something bigger or more complicated than others have. Use your imagination and be bold.

Here's a video to get you started.

If You Are Bored, Head Outside And Rejuvinate - Being Outdoors Clears Your Mind And Excites Your Senses

There are few, if any, activities you can engage in when you're bored that will revive your spirit and your sense of purpose quicker, or better, than heading outdoors and spending time in nature. The physical activity, the beauty, the fresh air and smells, all combine to give you a boost no matter where you are.

Almost every city and county have areas designated for hikers, and there are hundreds of state and national parks, most of which have views and trails you could only dream of. New comers to hiking are often surprised to learn that there are many clubs and organizations designed to help you learn how to hike safely, where to hike, and find like-minded people to do it with. Head over to the Sierra Club and find outings near you. You just might meet some awesome new friends.

Another great place to start is the American Hiking Society which will help you locate trails near you. If you are totally new to the hobby and don't know who to contact or how to start hiking, a great way to learn about hiking and trails is to become a volunteer. The American Hiking Society has dozens of volunteer projects each year, most last a week.

You will hike out and camp with a group of awesome people, and learn all about nature and of course how to repair and maintain the trails. Our son has been a trail crew volunteer with the Colorado Trail Foundation for a couple of years now, and he loves it. The friends you make will become lifelong friends and the experiences are the kind you can't buy.

Of course visit for even more trail ideas and suggestions, but whatever you do, grab a pack and head outdoors. You will find the reward much greater than you expected.
