Worcester Patriotic Pewter Plates

Updated on January 26, 2015

Patriotic American Collector Plates

For many years my dining room hutch has proudly displayed the Worcester Birth of a Nation pewter plate series. These patriotic collector plates, along with a few others I've picked up along the way, are beautiful representations of moments in American history.

These plates were produced from 1972 to 1976 in commemoration of America's bicentennial. There were made in limited edition, and they are extremely high quality pieces - each weighing nearly three pounds!

I know collector plates may not be the biggest trend right now, but that's sort of why I love them. These are simply well made plates that display a certain idealistic pride in America, with images so classic they look they are the covers of American History textbooks.

Hang Your Collector Plates on the Wall

The Worcester pewter plates are quite heavy so I suggest not hanging more than one from a single hook, however there are hangers available that hold several collector plates which could be used to display another series.

Which is the Right One?

Long after I got the Worcester Birth of a Nation series, I picked up another plate in a garage sale that looked remarkably like one of my plates.

Looking at the two plates above, at first glance you may not necessarily be able to see which one is the Worcester pewter plate. If you look closely, you can pick out several differences - the eagle at the top holding a shield, Paul Revere and his horse facing a different direction, the size of the tree, the detail of the image.

The plate on the left is the legitimate one. Luckily, if you are holding the one on the right in your hand, you would immediately know that it is not real because it's not made of pewter. In fact, it's not even metal. The plate on the right is ceramic! While it's painted to a good likeness, in person there is no question which plate is the one you want.

These pewter are very high quality. They are extremely detailed and have great depth to them.

Display Your Plate on a Plate Stand

I display my plate collection in my hutch, and plate stands are perfect for keeping them upright, stable and visible. A patriotic plate displayed on one of these stands looks great on a side table, especially for patriotic holidays.

This was the most information I could find on Pewter plates. Thank you. My Mom has a Bicentennial Commemorative Pewter Plate limited edition with a Certificate of authenticity from the American Historic Society. It is not like the ones you have. It has Paul Revere on the horse and a man handing him a lamp. Aroun d the edge are seals of the 13 colonies - states. on the back are the words WE ARE ONE and a story about Paul Revere and the imprint International Pewter and a Serial Number. If you can tell us an y more about this plate...its value - or any interested buyers. Let me know . My mother, at 93, is sorting and sifting and releasing.

Pewter seems very appropriate, what with Paul Revere being a pewtersmith and all. Nice collectible!

Nice lens. My great Grand Mother had a collection which she passed to my Grand Mother. I shall have to look and see which collection series (if indeed it is a series) that she has. Thank you again for an interesting lens
