X-Men: Regenesis

Updated on July 20, 2012

Team Wolverine and Team Cyclops Part Ways...

Throughout the month of October and towards the end of 2011, following the critical Schism between the mutants Cyclops and Wolverine, a split in their super-powered community is being resolved through a series of decisions that will alter the comic book landscape. This event is the quarter-long story called Regenesis

In this article, I'm going to cut it directly to the point; listed below will be a synopsis of the division, categorizing each of the known mutants into Team Cyclops or Team Wolverine (also known as Team Blue or Team Gold in some circles. Plots, summaries, some extra info - you name it; this should be a good landing page for anyone interested in the details behind the Regenesis.

X-Men Regenesis: Chapter 1 and Reading Order - Plots and Background Included

The Split between Cyclops and Wolverine, Regenesis #1
The Split between Cyclops and Wolverine, Regenesis #1

Starting up in October, I'm going to be following the event closely. I already picked up my recent copy of X-Men: Regenesis #1 and I'm preparing to outline the entire storyline. (Monday, October 17th, I plan on that update.)

Background: After facing anti-mutant sentiment from around the world, old Sentinel technology was released against them. In a final attack, The New Hellfire Club led by a 12-year old named Kade Kilgore, sent a new breed of the robot against Utopia. The X-Men succeeded in destroying the creature, but not before Scott and Logan took to blows. This was known as the event, X-Men: Schism.

001 X-Men: Regenesis #1 (One-Shot) (With the backdrop of a primitive standoff, Cyclops and Wolverine begin assembling members to their sides, ultimately going separate ways. Cyclops takes Utopia; Wolverine resurrects the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters.)

002 Generation Hope #12 (Occurs simultaneous with X-Men: Regenesis #1. Hope sends Idie with Wolverine to Westchester and has issues with the other members of her team.)

X-Men Regenesis: Chapter 2 - Wolverine Leaves San Francisco

Wolverine #17 (2011), excerpt
Wolverine #17 (2011), excerpt

The immediate event after the split up between the Summers Clan (Team Blue) and Logan's Clan (Team Gold) is an adventure in the Chinatown section of San Francisco. Wolverine is still considered the "Black Dragon" underworld boss and has to finish up some old business. In this series, he gets to team up with Gorilla Man.

003 Wolverine #17 (Wolverine returns, momentarily, to San Francisco to pick up some money and resign as the Chinatown Underwold Boss known as Black Dragon)

004 Wolverine #18 (Continues from Wolverine #17 in San Francisco.)

005 Wolverine #19 (Continues from Wolverine #18 and Logan finally ends up at the old Xavier School.)

X-Men Regenesis: Chapter 3 - The First Mutant Interlude

X-Men Legacy #259, excerpt. X-Men Regenesis
X-Men Legacy #259, excerpt. X-Men Regenesis

Since there's a shakeup in the mutant world, which basically starts at Utopia, there's going to be more decisions to be made. These few issues represent the first wave of those differences.

006 X-Men Legacy #259 (Rogue detects a unique mutant signature which appears to be Aerial. Blindfold is still present at Utopia. [Thanks to Taariq for noticing that discrepancy.])

007 Uncanny X-Men #544 (Bobby is the last to leave Utopia. Hank flies in and then leaves. The entire backdrop of this story reveals Mr. Sinister using this information and planning his next scheme.)

008 Avengers Academy #22 (Cyclops and Magneto make a trip to Avengers Academy. Noticeably, Erik doesn't appear to be under any accusations at this time, so this may be occurring before Magneto: Not A Hero #1.)

009 Magneto: Not A Hero #1 (Erik is framed for a terrorist attack and with the help of The White Queen, finds the culprit.)

010 X-23 #17 (The beginning of the story has Logan and Hellion discussing why he's chosen to stay at the school. It fits well with Regenesis.)

011 X-23 #18 (Continues X-23 #17.)

012 X-23 #19 (Continues and concludes from X-23 #18.)

X-Men Regenesis: Chapter 4

Those who left...

This is a synopsis of those heroes who moved on to the new school. It takes place after Wolverine's encounter in San Francisco and encompasses their first adventure back in Westchester.

013 Wolverine and The X-Men #1 (Logan and Kitty escort a committee through their school which is now officially named The Jean Grey School For Higher Learning.

014 Wolverine and The X-Men #2 (Continues from Wolverine and The X-Men #1. The School is under attack.)

015 Wolverine and The X-Men #3 (Conclusion of the attack on the school. Continues from Wolverine and The X-Men #2.)

016 X-Men Legacy #260 (Rogue saves Ariel, both decides to join Wolverine's School, and they teleport there after it's been destroyed in Wolverine and The X-Men #1-3.)

017 Marvel Holiday Magazine 2011 ("Logan's Lost Lesson", a short story where Wolverine teaches some of the students Hockey in the Winter.)

X-Men Regenesis: Chapter 5 - Cyclops and his Uncanny X-Men Teams of Utopia

Uncanny X-Men #544, excerpt
Uncanny X-Men #544, excerpt

This section is still being implemented and is waiting for more chronological markers. Until they become apparent, the Reading Order is still fluid.

018 New Mutants #33 (Danielle Moonstar takes the mutants to 1128 Mission Street in San Francisco so they can have their independence. With her: X-Man, Cypher, Warlock, Magma and Sunspot.)

019 New Mutants #34 (Danielle and her team begin to hunt for Blink. This story does not crossover into any other titles.)

020 New Mutants #35 (Continues from New Mutants #34.)

021 New Mutants #36 (Continues from New Mutants #35. The mutants finish their battle against the chaotic force and Blink officially decides to go to Wolverine's School.)

022 X-Men #20 (It's not firm, but Storm, Colossus, Jubilee, Psylocke, Warpath and Domino appear to be on a mission before the events of Uncanny X-Men #1. It does not appear the extinction team has had their first meeting.)

023 X-Men #21 (Continues from X-Men #20.)

024 X-Men #22 (Continues from X-Men #21.)

025 X-Men #23 (Concludes from X-Men #22. Jubilee meets Raizo and leaves the team.)

026 Generation Hope #13 (Hope and her team vs. Cyclops and crew. Then she begins a mutant tracking mission.)

027 Generation Hope #14 (Continues from GH #13.)

028 Generation Hope #15 (Continuing from GH #14, the team bring Sebastian Shaw to Utopia, causing Cyclops and the rest to freak out. Tensions break open and the issue is packed with fights and scuffles and they figure out what to do with one of their most hated enemies.)

029 Uncanny X-Men #1 (Cyclops builds an extinction team with Colossus, Magick, Namor, Magneto, White Queen, Storm, Danger and Hope. They face Mr. Sinister as his plans unfold.)

030 Uncanny X-Men #2 (Continues from Uncanny X-Men #1.)

031 Uncanny X-Men #3 (Concludes from Uncanny X-Men #2)

X-Men Regenesis: Chapter 6 - Extracurricular Assignments and Missions

Xmen #260.1, excerpt
Xmen #260.1, excerpt

As the Regenesis event begins to come to an end, there are some outer fringes left unkempt. These issues are the last vestiges of the mutant shakeup and tie off some of the older stories while beginning some of the new.

Wolverine's Side

032 X-Men Legacy #260.1 (The Jean Grey School is attacked by the N'Garai, demonic creatures that were barricaded until recent. Rogue, Gambit and others attempt to quietly quell the invasion while the students remain in class.)

033 Uncanny X-Force #19 (The other dimension Nightcrawler joins their team. Angel and the young version of Apocalypse joins the School controlled by Wolverine.)

034 Wolverine and the X-Men #4 (After X-Force, where the young Apocalypse and Angel are now part of the Jean Grey School.)

035 X-Factor #230 (Wolverine shows up after some dissension in the ranks and brings in Havok and Polaris for leadership. He tells the team he is putting them on retainer.)

Cyclops' Side

036 X-Club #1 (Cyclops and his science team dedicate a tethered satellite with unexpected results. [The rest of this limited series is not considered Regenesis.])

037 Astonishing X-Men #44 (Exalted: Part I: This story currently has no references and seems like a futuristic encounter with Cyclops in an alternate dimension.)

038 Astonishing X-Men #45 (Exalted: Part II: Continues from Astonishing X-Men #44.)

039 Astonishing X-Men #46 (Exalted: Part III: Continues from Astonishing X-Men #45.)

Mutant: Identify Yourself. Regenesis: Occurring - You must now pick a side.

X-Men Regenesis: Choose a side
X-Men Regenesis: Choose a side

As a mutant (most of us who read comics are proud to be called mutants. I know I am.) it is time for you to come to terms with your outlook on life. There's a split in the mutant community; perhaps once in a lifetime you thought Cyclops was a great leader. Or maybe you were compelled to follow the trail of Wolverine.

No longer will that do. It's time to walk the walk. In this poll, you'll be given two choices. You will either go with Wolverine to Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters or stay with Cyclops on the Island of Utopia.

What will you do?

In the aftermath of the Schism, the regenesis has begun. What choice have you made?

Cyclops' Roster for X-Men: Regenesis

They'll be starring in the Uncanny X-Men series.

The following mutants have decided to remain on Utopia with Cyclops. They are:

Psylocke (She's given control over the Island's defenses and will be used in rooting out spies.)

Colossus (With his new Juggernaut-enhanced powers, he feels his place is on Utopia instead of being around children.)

Magneto (He has no desire or philosophy for the school to exist.)

Hope (She shows no intention of leaving and continues to believe in her father's cause.)

Transonic (Stays with Hope's team.)

Dani Moonstar (Shows no indication she wants to go.)

Dazzler (Scott convinces her to run some of the "street teams" of mutants...whatever that means.)

Prodigy (Doesn't see Wolverine's idea helping mutants free themselves from persecution.)

Namor (Wants to be around people who will fight for their cause.)

Danger (Wants to be where the criminals are.)

Doctor Nemesis (Prefers the lab at Utopia.)

Magik (Is imprisoned on Utopia.)

Celeste Cuckoo (Will stay on Utopia because Quentin Quire is going to Westchester.)

Avalanche (Has a bar in San Francisco and likes it.)

Storm (Ororo still believes in Xavier's dream and doesn't like what Scott is doing, but is convinced to stay as a sort of moral compass.)

The White Queen (Emma is a teacher at heart, but she has funded the raising of Utopia and will remain for awhile longer. But not because of her relationship with Scott.)

In Generation Hope #12:

Pixie (Hope specifically convinces Megan to stay and help her get to mutants in need.)

Hope's team, without Idie, seems to be fine remaining with her on Utopia.

Wolverine and the X-Men
Wolverine and the X-Men

Wolverine's Roster for X-Men: Regenesis

His team will star in the Wolverine and the X-Men series.

The following mutants have decided to join Wolverine and head towards the eastern side of the US where Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters resides. They are:

Iceman (Wolverine approaches him first and wants him to teach.)

Shadowcat (She has a sentiment towards the school where she was originally trained.)

Beast (Hank McCoy is a big proponent of teaching, research, and has always wanted to resurrect the school.)

Rogue (Her story unfolds in X-Men Legacy #259-260.)

Ariel (After Rogue brings her back, she follows her to Wolverine's school.)

Polaris and Havok (Wolverine convinces them to come after he mentions the "X-Factor Investigations".)

Idie (Hope convinces Idie to go with Wolverine where she'll do more good than harm.)

Cannonball (Sam decides to go because he doesn't feel his head "is in a good place".)

Hellion (Doesn't like how he's required to act on Utopia.)

Blindfold (Is asked, and merely states she's heading to Westchester.)

Rachel Summers (Just got back from space and didn't know the school had closed.)

Quentin Quire (Realizes he'll be chained up if he stays on Utopia.)

X-23 (Wolverine doesn't give her a choice, but we later learn she ends up at Avengers Academy.)

Martha Johansson (I might be wrong, but she says nothing and remains a floating brain over books.)

Frenzy (Doesn't want to see Cyclops and Emma Frost flirt, so she's going to Westchester.)

Gambit (Remy is looking for a change of scenery.)

Toad (Convinces Wolverine to let him go. Plus he'll do janitor work.)

In New Mutants #33, we learn:

Face (Shan says that's where he belongs.)

Karma (Says she belongs wherever face goes.)
