10 Best Cleansing Foods

Updated on April 16, 2010

Cleansing Foods for Proper Health

With every bite of food, you can help to cleanse your body. The key is fiber and antioxidants, fiber, found in fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains, herbs absorb and eliminate toxins in the bowel. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals (internal toxins) and reduce oxidative stress. (Oxidative stress is linked to many degenerative diseases and certain types of cancers.)

Antioxidant vitamins and minerals are readily available in the same foods that are high in fiber and helpful phytonutrients. Eat organic whenever possible. Organic food is grown without pesticides or herbicides in his fed with natural fertilizers.  In addition, studies have shown that organic food often contains higher levels of vitamins and minerals than food grown using conventional farming methods.

The USDA recently ranked foods in order of antioxidants in a report released in the Journal of Agricultural Food and Chemistry. After investigating over 100 different foods, these were found to be the top 10 in terms of antioxidant properties:

  1. Small red beans (dried)
  2. Wild blueberries
  3. Red kidney beans
  4. Pinto beans
  5. Blueberries (cultivated)
  6. Cranberries
  7. Artichokes (quote)
  8. Blackberries
  9. Prunes
  10. Raspberries

Ten additional good food choices for cleansing:

  1. Apples
  2. Avocados
  3. Beets
  4. Celery
  5. Cabbage
  6. Flax Seeds
  7.  Kale
  8. Lemons
  9. Watercress
  10. Seaweed

Our bodies are only able to maintain health if we provide the essential nutrients needed to form a solid foundation for health.  Don’t target your cleansing by body part – liver, kidney, colon; instead focus on a quality nutrition and your body will take care of itself. Too many people get caught up in believing there is a program that will lead to perfect health based on some targeted cleansing. The body is a whole… it’s kind of silly to think you can just have one healthy functioning organ group and not another. Try incorporating several servings of the above fruits and vegetables into your daily diet and see how much better you’ll feel!  Here’s to good health!.
