10 Uses of Vicks VapoRub

Updated on September 3, 2014

Vicks VapoRub has been around for so many years. It is an over-the-counter product that many people can associate with their childhood memories. Most Mommies reach for Vicks VapoRub to relieve their kids’ colds, headache, throat and chest congestions. But its uses are not exclusive to children. Adults also use the mentholated ointment for headaches, chest congestions, and colds.

Lately, it seems that many other uses of Vicks VapoRub have been found, and here are most of them, including of course, its primary use as a decongestant and headache reliever.

10 uses of our favorite Vicks VapoRub:

  1. Chest Decongestant

Vicks vapor rub is most commonly used as a decongestant for the chest and the throat area. It can provide relief of cough and congestion symptoms when applied to your upper chest. It makes you breathe in the vapors to clear your chest. Nasal congestion can also be relieved by steam inhalation with Vicks VapoRub.

2. Relieves Headaches

Rubbing a small amount of Vicks VapoRub on your forehead and temples helps relieve your headaches. The mentholated scent helps release the pressure in your head and relieves the pain, or reduces the pain.

For sinus headaches, lightly rub a small amount of the mentholated ointment under your nose and breathe deeply through your nose. As the mentholated vapors are inhaled, your nasal passages open and the headache is temporarily relieved.

3. Relieves Sore Muscles

Vicks VapoRub can relieve overworked and sore muscles. Apply generously all over the aching area and gently massage the muscles. Vicks VapoRub can help the circulation of the muscles and can provide some relief.

4. Relieves Nighttime Coughs

The next time you have a cough and cannot sleep, apply Vicks VapoRub to your feet as it is proven to provide cough relief throughout the night. Before going to sleep, rub Vicks VapoRub all over your feet (with special attention to toes and soles), put on your socks, and get a nighttime cough relief.

5. Helps Paper Cuts and Splinters Heal Faster

To speed up the healing time and to prevent infection, clean the wound and dab a small amount of Vicks VapoRub on small cuts or splinters. Use on small cuts and scratches only. Due to its ingredients, a little burning may be experienced.

6. Gets Rid of Nail Fungus

If you suspect that you have toenail fungus, you can rub Vicks VapoRub on the toenail and the surrounding nail bed several times a day. When the nail turns dark, it means that Vicks VapoRub is killing the fungus. As your toenail grows, the dark part grows off and you can trim it off until all the dark part has disappeared. Continue to apply Vicks VapoRub on your toenail for two weeks to fully cleanse the nail bed of any remaining bacteria.

7. Prevents Your Cat from Scratching

Cats love to scratch every hard surface they can get their claws on. They may even love to scratch you. If you want to prevent your cat from ruining your furniture, or from scratching your skin, then apply a small amount of Vicks VapoRub to the hard surfaces your cat loves to scratch. Most cats hate the smell of this ointment and they steer clear of areas that smell of Vicks VapoRub. Also apply some to your arms and legs to avoid your cat’s claws. This applies until your cat gets used to the smell of Vicks VapoRub. When that happens, you are back to square one with your scratching cat.

8. Keeps Your Home Free from Pet Pee

If your pet dog or pet cat has not been potty trained yet, they can turn into pests by littering all over the house. To discourage your pets from doing their thing on areas they like to mark as their territory, place an opened jar of Vicks VapoRub in the area that you don’t want them to be in. The smell is going to discourage them from wetting the area. This trick also applies until the pets get used to the smell of Vicks VapoRub. When that happens, potty-training is the only permanent solution.

9. Works as Mosquito Repellant

Apply some Vicks VapoRub to your clothes and to your exposed skin to keep mosquitoes from biting. But if bitten by mosquitoes, apply Vicks VapoRub to the area and cover the area with a Band-Aid to relieve itching. Vicks VapoRub acts as a mosquito repellant. Open jars of Vicks VapoRub placed on picnic tables can also ward off flies.

10. Unleashes Fake Tears

For whatever reason and you need to shed tears but can’t, Vicks VapoRub may be of help. Dab a small amount of Vicks VapoRub just below your eyes. The vapors can cause your eyes to water. Never get the ointment in your eyes and do not put the ointment on your eyelids or it might leak into your eyes.
