We're so busy these days, aren't we? Having to focus on a diet plan, sticking to it, squeezing in exercise....well, it all seems quite overwhelming when we have such busy lifestyles. However, we are fortunate enough to live in an time where there are fantastic mobile apps around to give us a helping hand. However, there are thousands to choose from. So which one is right for you? In this article is a list of 10 of the most effective apps around. They are all very different so you are sure to find the one that is right for you.
1. The Walk
I absolutely love The Walk, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. If you are someone who has problems sticking to a particular form of exercise for longer than a week, then this is the app for you.
The Walk is an interactive story of which you are the main star. You take walks on a daily basis, and the app tracks your movements and the miles you’ve done via GPS. When you’ve walked a certain distance, you get rewarded with a new section of the story. It’s a great way to keep you motivated. There’s been so many times when I’ve been reading a novel, and I just had to start reading the next chapter. Well, if you want to do that here, you need to carry on walking. So it’s a great motivator.
2. Zombies Run
Zombies Run is made by the same developer as The Walk, and – as its title suggests – it is designed to track your progress on a map. This is so much more fun than just plotting your running route on a map; you get chased by zombies instead!
Paprika isn’t a diet app, but it’s probably one of the most effective ways for you to manage your weight loss. Paprika allows you to store recipes from all over the web, create a meal plan for the week and produce a grocery list. It’s a great time saver and a fantastic way of helping you stick to your diet.
This is one of the biggest weight loss apps on the market. For that reason, it has a fantastic database of foods that other users have already added, so finding the nutritional values for the meal you’ve just eating is pretty easy. There are plenty of articles and ideas that you can read within the app, and you get rewards for doing so. They also have a big list of exercises so it should be straightforward to find the one closest to what you have been doing.
5. My Diet Coach
My diet coach is a really cute app, with very simple and minimal features. At its heart, it is a panic button. When you are feeling tempted, you hit the panic button and the app will give you a bit of motivation. This might be a tip or a quote to keep you going, and you can even store a motivating photo to look at. It’s like having a friend to call when you are having a moment of weakness, so it’s a great app for those people who have trouble sticking to a diet.
6. South Beach
As far as diets go, the South Beach diets is one of my favorites because it really is a healthy balance. This app is really well designed, and what I find very helpful is that it gives you a nutritional breakdown of your food diary every day. So when you are putting together your meal plan for the week, with the use of a very clear graph this will give you an indication of whether you are choosing food that is too high in saturated fat, salt or sugar.
7. Fit Star
Fit star is an app-based training program with a wide variety of fitness exercises to choose from. The app has a very slick design and it is easy for a beginner to decide where to start. There are pre-designed programs to follow as well as mini-exercise sessions for you to choose from, something they call ‘freestyle’.
8. Jillian Michaels
I love Jillian Michaels. Her exercise DVDs are always of the highest quality and if you watch The Biggest Loser like me, I’m sure you will find her very motivating and straightforward in her approach. So I was excited to discover she had her own app. It’s very much what you would expect from this celebrity and its very well designed, with meal plans, recipe ideas and exercises for you to learn.
9. 7 Minute Workout Challenge
Wow, this is tough. Really tough. The premise of this app is that it can get you fit in 7 minutes a day, but that comes with a condition. The condition is that the exercises are very intense and extremely hard. If you are time-poor and want to get back into exercise, this might be a good place to start.
10. Your Camera!
No, this isn’t the name of the app. I actually mean the camera on your phone. One of the most effective motivators for a dieter is to see progress, but sometimes it’s really hard to notice any progress. So keep a photo diary. Take a photo each week in the same clothes and see the change in your body by looking back at the pictures. It can keep you on track when you have moments of weakness.
