10 Superfoods That Can Save Your Life

Updated on September 30, 2014

Have you heard about superfoods?

Superfood doesn't fly through the air and saves people like Superman. But it can certainly save you when it comes to treatment or prevention of diseases. Superfoods provide for the body excellent nutritional support. The term superfood refers to foods that have a high level of phytonutrients. Phytonutrients have a huge positive impact on our health.

Proper food can definitely make your life much better. I am really careful when it comes to food. There was a period in my life, while I was on college, when I didnât care too much about what I eat. And, honestly I didnât eat too much. Because of that, I was sick most of the time. My immune system was in very bad condition. So, I decided to make a change.

I started to read and learn more about proper diet and food, and what are the effects of various combinations of fruits and vegetables. You can improve your life, health and even your mood with proper food. Phytonutrients are members of the family of antioxidants, the leaders in the fight against free radicals - oxygen molecules that play a key role in heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis and Alzheimer's disease. Most phytonutrients can be found in fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Some foods contain such high levels of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that they actually possess special healing and detoxifying properties. Therefore they are truly super.

I made this list of 10 Superfoods that can save your life, and on it you can find different foods that are really healthy, and they will give you necessary energy, prevent diseases, help you look younger and perhaps even prolong your life.

Listed food use in preparing meals or eat it fresh. It's all up to you.

1# Dark Chocolate - It reduces stress

You are shocked now. How can chocolate help me? It will just make me fat! But that is wrong thinking. Most of us love chocolate, but we eat it with a guilty conscience. Consuming 40 grams of dark chocolate with a higher percentage of cocoa per day lowers stress hormone in people who are prone to it. It is also good for the heart because it lowers blood pressure, while antioxidants strengthen the immune system. The darker the chocolate the more cocoa can be found in it.

Dark chocolate contains high levels of flavonoids. Flavonoid gives a bitter and distinctive taste for which many of us love chocolate. It has been proven that dark chocolate stimulates the production of endorphins (the happy hormone), and contains serotonin, a hormone that stabilizes mood. It also contains potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, sodium and iron.

Just because chocolate is healthy, it doesn’t mean that you should eat it in unlimited amounts. If you want to achieve a positive effect for your health, then eat 100 grams of dark chocolate daily.

2# Fresh Cottage Cheese - Great for bones

I love cheese. I can eat it every day with every meal I prepare. Especially healty is fresh cottage cheese. Fresh cheese, made from unpasteurized milk, is very tasty and it strengthenes your bones. It also helps in building muscles and organs. Cheese is low in sodium and rich in calcium and proteins. It is perfect for women in menopause, it can prevent osteoporosis which comes due to lack of calcium.

Fresh cottage cheese is especially important for people with lactose intolerance. They can't drink milk, but they can eat this cheese because most carbohydrates are removed in a process of cheese production, so they can eat it without any problems. It is great for prevention of heart disease, high blood pressure and colon cancer. Cheese is also great for dental health, it prevents the creation of plaque. It is also important in diabetes diet therapy, liver and bile disease.

And the best thing is you can eat cheese with almost everything. Give it a try, you won't regret it. Tasty and healthy.

3# Sweet Potatoes - High levels of vitamin A

My favorite vegetable is potato. I could eat them every day and in every possible combination. Sweet potato is one of the most nutritious vegetables. The level of vitamin A in sweet potatoes breaks all records. They are rich in antioxidants and substances that have anti-inflammatory activity. They are a great source of starch which provides our body with glucose. Glucose is the fuel for the brain, muscles and organs.

In addition to the exceptional taste, sweet potato is a great source of vitamins and minerals. Its greatest value is a large amount of beta-carotene. Only 140 grams of sweet potato fully provides daily need for vitamin E, which is extremely important because it protects the body from heart problems, and blockage of blood vessels. Antioxidants are also important for the good functioning of the brain (the prevention of Alzheimer's disease, etc.).

Sweet potato is virtually fat-free and cholesterol-free, and contains very little sodium (too much can cause high blood pressure). Sweet potato is a great source of dietary fiber, which are essential for the proper functioning of digestion, thereby reducing the risk of colon cancer and related diseases.

4# Hot Pepper - Spicy is healthy

Hot peppers are great for your immunity, they make it stronger. Source of health in this case is capsaicin, the ingredient that fights obesity, cancer, diabetes and bacteria that create an ulcer. Use hot peppers in preparations of many meals, and in that way you will keep your energy consumption.

There is an interesting fact about hot peppers. Namely, they warm the body in winter, and cool it down in summer. It may seem strange, but the peppers raise your body temperature and you sweat, which ultimately lowers the body temperature. Another benefit of chili peppers their effectiveness in anticoagulation and prevention of heart attacks and strokes. Peppers are natural anti-inflammatory foods that also affect the maintenance of normal blood pressure. Hot peppers contain high amounts of vitamin C, even more than citrus fruits, and are rich in vitamin B6, potassium, magnesium and iron.

5# Quinoa - Queen of grains

Unfortunately, many people have never even heard of this grain. Quinoa contains all the important nutrients for good health. It is rich in fiber, minerals and proteins, and contains a small amount of calories and fat. Studies have shown that a bowl of quinoa every day can reduce the risk of obesity, cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Quinoa is an excellent source of magnesium, a mineral that relaxes blood vessels and prevents their contraction. Increased intake of magnesium has been proven effective in reducing the frequency of headaches. It also contains vitamin B, which improves metabolism in the brain and muscle cells. Fibers from these grains are excellent protection against breast cancer.

Quinoa is really healthy, and with daily consumption you can reduce many symptoms of different diseases. It has mildly bitter taste, but that shouldn’t stop you from eating it. You can combine it with all sorts of vegetables and other grains, and you can make some excellent meals.

Women should eat avocado. It is an amazing source of health properties concerning the ladies. Avocados are rich in fiber and low in calories. Avocado is necessary for women's health. Its secret lies in its fat. Fat from avocado is monounsaturated and in combination with vitamin E and carotenoids is essential for the beauty of skin and hair. It also helps to reduce the bad cholesterol, reduces fat around the stomach and the risk of heart attack.

Avocado is very rich in folic acid and thus suitable for pregnant women as it helps in the development of the brain and other tissues of the child. In addition to these health benefits, it is very effective in stopping bad breath, but also reduces the risk of cancer of lips.

7# Tomato - The largest natural source of lycopene

Regular consumption of tomatoes can reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. Tomatoes are rich in lycopene for which scientists say is the most powerful antioxidant. Tomato is also rich in vitamin C, carotene, vitamin E and iron. Tomato lowers blood pressure and stimulates the secretion of gastric and intestinal digestive juices and thus helps digestion. Tomatoes can be consumed in the form of juice, salads, soups or fresh and unseasoned.

More and more medical researches show health benefits of tomatoes. Personally I love mixture of tomatoes and cucumbers. That is so delicious, and it gives you a lot strength. They are both rich in vitamins and minerals. Tomato today is the most consumed vegetable in the world. It is grown in all countries and at all latitudes, and world production exceeds 70 million tonnes per year. Today there are over 600 varieties of healthy, red tomato vegetable.

There is a great difference between tomatoes from stores and those made in your garden. If you have a garden, plant this marvelous vegetable, you will not regret it. And here is another tip: all the healthy substances are in the bark of tomato, so don’t peel them, eat them with bark.

Tomatoes contain lycopene, he most powerful antioxidant from the carotenoid group, which helps in the fight against cluster of cancer cells.Lycopene is also useful against a number of health and other diseases. It protects lipids, proteins and DNA from oxidation. Our body does’t produce lycopene, so we need other sources of this powerful antioxidant. Although it can be found in other fruits and vegetables, the highest concentration is in the tomato.

8# Coconut - Coconut milk is identical to human blood plasma

Coconut milk is a much better drink than commercial sports drinks, which are full of sugar and artificial colors. The molecular structure of coconut milk is identical to human blood plasma. Drinking coconut milk is like a mini-blood transfusion. During World War II, giving coconut milk to wounded soldiers was a common practice. Coconut oil speeds up metabolism and accelerates calorie burning, making it an ideal food for weight loss. Coconut oil has anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties. Residents of the Pacific islands considered this oil gift of nature and a cure for all diseases.

Coconut is also full of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. It is an excellent source of manganese, one coconut contains 60 percent of the recommended daily dose of manganese. It also contains 11 percent of the daily required amount of iron, nine percent of phosphorus and eight percent of potassium. Coconut is also a good source of protein. I must admit that is caloric, but keep in mind that proteins from coconut primarily help to build muscles, not fat.

9# Noni - Superfood from Tahiti

This plant has various healing properties. Seeds have a laxative and anti-inflammatory effects, and noni fruit is the most important part of the plant since it emits a high quality juice that works on a variety of different problems. Today, through research of noni fruit, modern science has confirmed its beneficial effects. Noni contains 155 bioactive compounds, and each one of them has a specific role in human health. Very popular is Noni Juice.

Doctors, scientists and botanists have been studying noni for the last ten years. Noni Juice can be taken with medications, and in that way it neutralizes the negative side effects . Noni is available in various forms, except in the form of juice, we can use it in the form of creams, pills, dressings, tea and tonics. But noni juice is the most popular form.

It is highly recommended to drink this juice as a prevention. Noni provides our body with a variety of nutrients that are necessary to maintain our health. Give it a try!

10# Lentil - Great substitute for red meat

Honestly, I don’t like lentils. During the war this is the only food we had, and that is why I avoid to eat it. It just reminds me of that terrible period of my life. But it is very, very healthy. My aunt eats one bowl of lentils every day, and she is one healthy woman.

Lentils don’t contain cholesterol, they have very little fat and lots of soluble and insoluble fiber, which helps to regulate blood sugar, reduce cholesterol levels and also stimulate digestion. Lentils are rich in vitamins and minerals, including iron. It contains large amounts of lysine which can’t be found in other grains, but it is low in methionine, tryptophan and cysteine, which can be found in large amounts on other grains. Therefore it is suggested to combine lentils with different grains in the same meal, and in that way you will get an balanced composition of amino acids.

The only things on this list that I would recommend as superfoods are Noni, Avocado and Coconut. Noni is practically the best superfood and outmatches all of these by a long shot. The juice taste like medicine and is very potent, but it is definitely the most beneficial food I have encountered.

A lot of information on this list would do terribly if this author was aware of the Weston A. Price Foundation (I plan to have an article for them soon).

I can't have the chocolate anymore due to my A-fib, and I hate eating hot peppers, but everything else sounds good. I'd like to know how to get fresh cottage cheese also.

Where can you get "fresh" cottage cheese. I am assuming that is different than the stuff at the regular grocery store?

Great information for sure! I have bookmarked this all over the place. I would bless it except a couple of angels beat me to it. You have created a soundly researched, important article about a great healer: nutritious food. I would add kale, broccoli and cauliflower to that list.
