100% symptom free from Crohn's disease

Updated on September 19, 2012

I am 100% symptom free from Crohn's disease. First of all, i need to say that I am not a doctor and I do not state this article as if I were one. Always seek medical care before attempting this plan. I have had Crohn's disease for about 34 years. I was on medication for a good 20 years but nothing really worked for me. The pain was always there. I have also had three surgeries, each time the disease would return. My last surgery was in 2005 and the disease returned in Sept, 2011. By Jan.2012 the disease came back with a vengeance: weakness, extreme pain, vomiting, bed-ridden for 24 - 48 hours at a time. I knew that surgery #4 would soon be my next option..........so I thought. I was speaking one day to a friend of mine and she told me about a food plan that worked for a friend of her's. It was very restrictive and she had to be on it for years in order for it to work. I listened to her but didn't think much of it. When I got home I took a look at the website but only for a minute, The next day, i looked at it a little longer. I didn't know if it would work but surgery was my next option. I talked with my husband and we decided to try it. It is called the SCD ( Specific Carbohydrate Diet). And, yes, it has worked for me. I started the diet on March 17th of this year (2012) and, thus, have been on it for about a half a year. The first few weeks on the diet, I did not know it would work for me but I stopped vomiting the first week I started the diet. The next week brought a decrease in pain. By June I could honestly say that I was 100% symptom free and have been that way since then. For this diet you are very restricted by what you can eat: no grains, no lactose ( you can have certain cheeses and homemade yogurt), no starch, and only simple carbs. You just have to get used to the foods you can eat. I enjoy being on this diet. The book I read was Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall. The almond flour I use is extremely expensive but we weighed the option of looking at another surgery or buying this flour once a month. I will be on this diet for two years. We will see after that. I will give all glory to God for this diet being brought into my life. I am very healthy now and 100% symptom free of Crohn's disease.
