28 pounds ago..

Updated on August 8, 2016

The most annoying thing a person could ever tell you is, “you gained weight.” hahaha.. I know. I’m not saying that being fat is a sin or ugly.. No. Never. But it’s just so out of line that when you meet someone in the street that you haven’t seen in years, instead of saying “hi, how are you?” they’d start the conversation with, “Oh my gosh April, you gained weight.” and I’d go like “i know” then i’ll awkwardly start the conversation again with “so how’s life” and instead of answering my question the person replied “ hahahaha, what did you do to yourself?” i mean, seriously?! What’s wrong if i gained the extra weight? Did i turned out into a different person because i gained weight? It’s just plain insulting and very impolite.

i know a lot of people suffered from this situation.. Society is so judgmental and so focused on what a person “should” look like. That day, i took a good long look at myself in the mirror. Sure my waistline was 6 inches bigger than it use to. I had a muffin top, big arms and a cottage cheese for a thigh. But c’mon.. they don’t have to rub it in my face. they don’t have single out things that make it sound like there is something wrong with me.

Then one fateful day, i accidentally saw my classmate from college as i was doing my groceries. He went like, “April is that you?”. i turned around and said hi as i recognized him. He said “I almost didn’t recognized you, you looked…. ( a long paused) different. I was just staring at him waiting for him to say the “f” word, but what he said crushed every self esteem left in my soul, he told me, “ you are way prettier in college, bring that back, ayt?” (with a wink) then he left.

That was it, that’s the final straw.. And the journey to my 28 lbs weight loss begins.

I did a lot of reading and research to an effective weight loss lifestyle. Every morning i’d make myself a warm lemon water with mint to help me burn the excess fat and to boost my metabolism. I also read about that, if you increase your water intake to at least 8–10 glasses a day, it will draw out the excess water that your body is currently storing. So i did that for a week.. To my surprise, without even doing exercise or lessening my food intake, it worked, i lost 2 lbs. Yey!! (so good job momma)

The next thing i did was to study about food.. Food that can help me loose weight. So, of course the healthy and most effective option to eat was nuts, fruits and vegetables. They contain a lot of vitamins that your body pretty much need, water and fiber to help you feel fuller even if you didn’t eat that much. So that week, i tried substituting my normal breakfast which consist of rice,( I’m Asian and rice for breakfast is a staple) fried eggs, bacon, cereals with a healthier version. Instead of having rice, i’d make a scrambled egg with peppers, tomatoes and onions. That’s it.. I remove the cereals, white bread, bacon and other processed food in my diet. And instead of having coffee with sugar and cream and all that jazz, i’ll have a steaming cup of green tea to satisfy my caffeine cravings. Lunch would consist of half cup of rice (can’t live without my rice) a low fat vegetable dish( saute or stewed) and a piece of fruit for dessert. For my dinner, i’d be a having a salad with a light dressing and a piece of fruit to end it with. Again, a week has passed and i checked on my weight, i successfully lost 4 lbs. I’m progressing.. It’s working and i’m pumped about it.

Exercise came in mind, i chose running for an hour, early in the morning (5:30am) and yoga in the evening to help my mind and body relax before i hit the sack.

I saw my body shrink.. My clothes hang loosely, I’m toner and healthier and i feel great. My spirits are up, my self esteem is higher and i am still motivated to continue this lifestyle up until today.

This article is not to offend people that have issues with their weight but this is an encouragement. That if i can do it, there is no way in this world that you can’t. I’m promoting a healthier lifestyle, i’m not trying to point out or high light people’s flaws.
