Pre-Holiday Weight Loss

The thought of losing weight seems to always sneak its way into the back of our minds, and keep a burden on our shoulders. To top it up, pre-holiday season is one of the hardest times, as we race to drop as many kilos as we can, just to put them all back on as we treat ourselves with the Christmas goodies.

Now, when talking about weight loss and its downfalls, there seem to be three clearly identifiable problems, or so-called excuses: long, tiresome workouts, diet food, and tasteless drinks.

That sounds awfully boring and it’s not a surprise why some of us fail. Not to say that passion and perseverance can’t make one stay on track, but let’s take a moment here and ask ourselves: Does it have to be so hard after all?

3 Steps to Fun Weight Loss

Here are 3 ideas, 3 steps to make your weight loss fun and enjoyable. Don’t take these steps per se, play with them and be creative. The best way to lose weight is to find a method that suits your lifestyle and your likes.

1. Pick/Create a workout that you enjoy

The treadmill is great for losing weight, but 30-40 minutes on it daily is not the only way. If you do enjoy running, try interval training. It has been researched and recommend by numerous famous trainers. Next time you go gym, try this routine on the treadmill, instead of your usual 30-40 minutes run:

Speed Level 4: 2 minutes walking

Speed Level 8: 1 minute jogging

Speed Level 4: 1 minute walking

Speed Level 10: 1 minute sprinting

Speed Level 4: 1 minute walking

Speed Level 8: 1 minute jogging

Speed Level 4: 1 minute walking

Speed Level 10: 1 minute sprinting

Speed Level 3: 1 minute cool down

A workout as simple as this can get you more results in 10 minutes than you ever got in 40 minutes. Adjust it to your abilities, and if you can, jog on 9 and sprint on 12. However, it is important to keep the 1 minute intervals as that is where the difference takes place, the famous ‘stop and go motion’, which many trainers have been recommending for the past couple of years.

What About Dancing?

Still not excited about the treadmill? That’s okay, just choose a different way to do your cardio training. Check out the cross-trainer or rowing machine, they have been proven to burn the same or even more calories than running. If you enjoy classes, try Zumba, body pump or step workouts. They are fun and they get your heart pumping. The Spanish have a similar workout with Zumba, called Batuka. Type Batuka on Youtube and you’ll find lots of step by step videos. If you fancy a night in and learning a few Spanish dancing steps, that is an enjoyable way to burn calories.

2. Experiment healthy cooking

If diets are not for you, don’t follow them. Diets are restricted plans, which make it feel like our lives are on hold – no more comfort food and movie nights, no more eating out with friends. That’s not enjoyable!

Healthy eating, combined with exercise is the best way to lose weight and the success formula to becoming slim and fit. So don’t shy away from it, just go back to basics and experiment. Lavish your fridge with plenty of fresh veggies, lean meats, fish, and fruits and play with the flavors. A simple grilled salmon and asparagus meal with a fruit salad desert can be both delicious and low in calories.

3. Make your water and green tea taste like a summer cocktail

Let’s admit it, as much as we try to, it is hard to keep happy with drinking water and green tea all day. Fruit juices and sodas sound a lot more fun. However, drinking the right amount of water on a daily basis is very important for both our health and journey to weight loss.

Here are a few tricks to make your water more enjoyable and even healthier. Get one jug of water and fill with fresh lemon slices. If you feel adventurous, add some mint leaves. This will not only make it tasty and full of freshness, but it will indulge your body with vitamin C and antioxidants. It’s a great way to get that perfect skin you've been longing for.

I get extra adventurous with my green tea and I make myself a ‘mojito’ out of it. First, I make a jug of tea, I let it cool down and then I refrigerate it. When I feel thirsty, I quickly add to a blender ice, freshly squeezed lemon juice and a cup of tea. I blend it into a beautiful frozen mix and I serve it in a glass with lemon slices and fresh mint leaves. Yummy!

If you prefer your green tea warm, you could make it tastier by adding lemon and a bit of honey or stevia.

A Last Sneaky Tip

Here’s a last tip to sneak a guilty pleasure into your weight loss plan. Although we all know that there is no room for alcohol in a healthy lifestyle, especially when dieting, I suggest giving yourself a little treat from time to time. One or two wine glasses a week are too innocent to do any damage. Even more, doctors recommend that, consumed in moderation, red wine is good for us, and can help us live longer and healthier.

Remember that the best way to lose weight is to keep it fun and suitable to your lifestyle. If you prefer structure, a strict diet plan and regular exercise, do that!

However, if you want something that is more laid back and sustainable for the long term, listen to your body and make the changes. Take one step at a time, enjoy a healthier lifestyle and you will get closer to your weight loss goals.

Enough of my opinions, I want to hear what you have to say. What do you think is the best way to lose weight?
