3 Things You Should Know About Mercury In The Fish You Eat

Updated on March 27, 2013

1. The Health Benefits Of Eating Fish Generally Outweigh The Costs

Almost all fish contains some mercury, and as most people know, consuming mercury is not good for you. It is toxic and damaging to the brain. However, the many health benefits of eating fish, especially wild salmon which is one of the healthiest foods you can eat, generally outweigh this negative impact. Fish is full of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and numerous other vitamins and minerals. In addition, most fish contains selenium, a powerful, cancer fighting mineral, that helps to mitigate the effects of mercury.

2. Canned Light Tuna Is Better Than Albacore

Tuna is one of the fish that is known to be most contaminated with mercury. However, many people do not know that the type of canned tuna that you buy makes a difference. The two main kinds of canned tuna are chunk light and chunk white (albacore). Albacore is a larger tuna species that can have up to three times the mercury contamination as the smaller version used in most canned light.

3. Some Types Of Fish Are Worse Than Others

You probably already guessed this. The fish that usually contain the highest levels of mercury include shark, mackerel (king), tuna (bigeye, ahi), tilefish, swordfish, marlin, and orange roughy.
