My 30 Day Shred Review
I'm not usually the kind of person that enjoys doing fitness DVDs, but I heard about the 30 Day Shred with Jillian Michaels (one of the trainers on The Biggest Loser) and I was intrigued. Lots of people were raving about how great of a workout it was and how it helped them lose inches all over.
The DVD contains 3 workouts that are 27 minutes each. Level 1 starts out a bit easier, level 2 is harder, and level 3 is supposed to really kick your butt.
All the workouts require a set of dumbbells and a mat (if you're working out on a hard floor). They consist of a brief warm-up at the beginning and cool-down stretch at the end. Then there are 3 circuits of strength (3 minutes), cardio (2 minutes), and abs (1 minute).
It sounds easy enough, but the circuits are seriously tough. The strength training moves are mostly compound moves, where you do upper- and lower-body toning at the same time (for example, squats with overhead press or lunges with bicep curls). The cardio intervals are heart-pumping high impact moves like jumping jacks and high knees. The ab segments are a bit of a break, but still challenging.
For example, the first circuit for level 1 looks like this:
- Strength: 30 seconds push-ups, 1 minute squat w. overhead press, repeat
- Cardio: 30 seconds jumping jacks, 30 seconds jump rope, repeat
- Abs: 30 seconds crunches, 30 seconds reverse crunches
Some of the more challenging moves have a slighly easier modification, but most of the circuits require you to really push yourself. As Jillian says, 20 minutes of this is going to take the place of hours of phoning it in at the gym.
Overall, I think this is definitely one of my favorite workouts I've ever done. Now that I've been doing the DVD for a while, I go through levels 1-3 each week and alternate with cardio workouts every other day. I've always found lifting weights boring, and I don't have much time to work out during the day, so this DVD has been a god sent for me.
To anyone thinking about giving the 30 Day Shred a try, I highly recommend it. If you couple it with healthier eating, you're sure to see results on the scale. Even if you don't diet, it will definitely tone and firm you all over.
