Aromatic Lemongrass

As I was walking around my garden, I found one bushy lush green grass. When I stepped near to that plant and plucked one leaf it touched my heart with a divine pleasant fragrance. Yes, most of the plant lovers who are reading this, guessed right! It is a lemongrass plant. Many of us are familiar with this aromatic medicinal plant, commonly called as lemongrass. Lemongrass is a herb which belongs to the grass family of Poaceae, and is also known as Cymbopogon citratus.

How to Grow Lemon grass

Growing lemongrass is very simple and easy. If you provide more space, the plant would definitely enjoy the space and grows into hefty bush. A single stalk along with its roots or few bunches of lemongrass stalks with roots can be planted in the soil directly. Make sure that the plant is in a bright spot with sufficient sunlight. It expects plenty of watering too. After 4 to 6 months depending upon its growth and condition, the grass is ready to harvest.

Usually, once it is established, the lemongrass will propagate on its own. Small stalks of new plants will begin to grow by the side of existing stalks.

Healthy Principles in Lemongrass

Lemongrass is basically a rich source of essential vitamins such as vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B3, vitamin B5, vitamin B6, vitamin C and folate, along with a host of important minerals like calcium, potassium, phosphorous, magnesium, copper, iron and zinc. It is also a significant source of antioxidants, flavonoids and anti-fungal and antimicrobial compounds.

1. Lemongrass Oil

Due to the unique natural flavor of lemongrass, I always keep one bottle of lemongrass oil at home.

Oil Preparation

Here is a simple method to prepare lemongrass oil.

Take one cup of pure coconut oil and an equal amount of fresh or dried lemongrass in a pan. Mix both ingredients and boil it until the grass turns blackish or brownish in color. Let the oil cool and later it can be poured and stored in a glass container.

Benefits

  • Due to the distinctive aroma, it gives a soothing pleasant feeling to mind.
  • Reduces headache.
  • Reduces dandruff.
  • Strengthens hair follicles and promotes hair growth.

2. Lemongrass Buttermilk

Lemongrass buttermilk is a tasty and healthy appetizer. To prepare this, blend coconut, cumin seeds, lemon grass and green chilly to fine paste and add butter milk. Add sugar and salt according to your taste. Pour a seasoning made of fried mustard seeds, a few garlic pods, dry red chilies and curry leaves. Most delicious healthy appetizer, lemongrass thambuli is ready to taste.

3. Mosquito repellent

There are two ways in which lemongrass acts as a mosquito repellent.

Extraction Method

Boil the lemongrass mixed with water for a few minutes and allow it to cool. Meanwhile, crush the garlic pods, extract the garlic juice and keep aside. Once the boiled mixture of lemongrass and water is back to normal room temperature, mix the garlic juice extracts and store it in a sprayer container and use it. Due to the strong incense of both ingredients, the mosquitoes moves away.

Alternative Extraction Method

This is self-explored method where I use several other ingredients. Take a mud pot and add dry indigenous cow-dung cakes, lemongrass leaves (preferably, dried leaves, otherwise fresh leaves are fine), neem leaves, one or two camphor and a spoon of homemade indigenous ghee and burn these together. The burning process using these items create a holy atmosphere at home and repels the troublesome mosquitoes.

4. Lemongrass Tea

Lemongrass tea can be prepared using water, sugar/ jaggery with lemongrass leaves (fresh or dried). Boil all these ingredients and lemongrass tea is ready to serve. Adding a few mint leaves and tea powder to this decoction can give another variety tea.

Benefits

  • Consumption of lemongrass tea improves digestion.
  • Lemongrass tea is a natural diuretic and can be used as a detoxifier.

Lemongrass tea was observed to have cardio-protective effect by increasing blood circulation and decreasing diastolic blood pressure

I am sure that now you are eager to grow lemongrass at home and make the best utilization of the plant. There are different options to grow lemongrass:

  • Backyard garden: If you have enough space in the backyard then growing lemongrass on the ground is the best.
  • Pots/ grow-bags: In case of lack of space, you may use grow-bags or pots to grow lemongrass.

Bring Lemongrass to Your Home

Are you ready to start? Growing lemongrass is not at all difficult and you don’t have to have a magical green thumb to be successful.I suggest everyone to have this plant in your garden which has got abundant medicinal and healthy benefits. Consumption of lemongrass in any forms of value added food has got numerous healthy gains. Apart from these health advantages, let me just share with you four amazing health benefits of this aromatic plant.

Lemongrass is a flexible herb with a wonderful refreshing lemon flavor and scent with a variety of medicinally beneficial properties. Due to natural mosquito repellent property with a refreshing flavor and scent, it is beneficial. It is also good for your skin and hair. If you have no lemongrass, then it is time for you to grow lemongrass in your garden.

Wonderful article Ms Sneha Ji. Many things have been brought out in the article and is the need of the hour. As per one Renowned Doctor , zinc, iron , amino acids and vitamin C are the main ingredients required to boost ones immune system against the deadly Corona disease. Your article contains important information of having almost all above ingredients in lemon grass. Next, it talks about mosquito repellent. This is another important information. And gives scope for further study on viruses say as corona virus killer as a substitute for expensive sanitizer. Lemon grass tea as a substitute to the current Tea , is another good information brought by the author, as it helps in reducing BP and cardiovascular health related issues. Very Informative article in maintaining ones health. Regards Shivprakash 9449284119

I have a bottle of citronella oil at home .. after reading this article, realised that it is lemongrass oil and has these many benefits. Didn’t know that it could be used for hair as well because on the bottle its anti mosquito properties are highlighted. If the plant is so easy to grow, I am planting one at home. Very nice and informative article. Repelling mosquitoes with lemon grass is a very useful information. In Ayurvedic literatures fumigation methods with many other herbal medicines are advised to avoid mosquitos and microbes, they are also found effective. I think distillation method is using to extract lemon grass oil in large quantities. Expecting more articles from Sneha Bhat.
