Your self image is basically your opinion of yourself. It is very important to have a healthy self image. The problem is that we attach our self image to external factors. In most cases, people attach it to what others think of them. Otherwise, they attach it to their achievements.

If I achieve this, I am a worthy human being.
If everyone likes me, then I am a good person.

This kind of attitude is unhealthy. This is what leads to a lot of mental trauma. There will be situations where you will fail. There will be times when people don't like you. You should not let these variables define your self worth. Learn to love yourself. Have a high opinion of yourself. If you don't love yourself, it is unfair to expect others to do so.

Don't beat yourself up

Stop being so hard on yourself. It is okay to make mistakes. It is okay if everything is not perfect. That is what makes you human.

Treat yourself like you would treat your loved ones

If someone you love says, " I am useless ", you would immediately disagree. You would give them so many reasons why they are important. You will put in efforts to make them feel valued. But when your inner voice says " I am useless ", you tend to agree with that. This shows that you don't love yourself. Whenever you feel that way, start a debate with yourself. Make a list of every thing you have achieved in life. Read it often. Affirm to yourself that you are a wonderful human being.

Bottom Line

Stop beating yourself up everytime things go slightly wrong.

Celebrate your small wins

Life is all about the little things. Be excited about the small things you achieve. It could be as simple as cooking a meal or resisting a guilty pleasure. You don't have to achieve great things. Just do small things with great love. Don't allow yourself to be happy only after achieving a huge goal. That will naturally happen. Every little detail in your life matters and is important. That's what makes you who you are. Reward yourself for your small wins and celebrate them. This will greatly boost your self confidence and improve your self image.

Don't Compare Yourself With others

Everyone is unique in their own ways. Comparing yourself to someone is an insult to your originality. We all have a different purpose to serve in this world. Our journeys are different. Society has convinced us that life has to be lived in a certain way. Study, get a job, get married, have children and get them to do the same thing. Not only do you have to follow this pattern but you should also do things at the right time. I find it amusing how you can generalize this unique experience called life. Some may want to get married at 20 while others get married at 40. There is no particular time for this that everyone must adhere to. You should do things when you feel the time is right. So don't compare your journey to anyone else's. Live life on your own terms and at your own pace.

Spend time with supportive people

Sometimes you become part of groups where you are constantly ridiculed. They shame you for being yourself. You are made to feel bad about your looks, personality, etc. Such people are extremely insecure. They point out other people's flaws to feel better about themselves, These people don't just drain your mental energy. They destroy your self image too. Avoid such people at all costs.

Spend time with the ones who make you feel good about yourself. But beware of people who engage in flattery and manipulation. If you observe closely, you can spot the genuine ones.People who love you just the way you are. Surround yourself with such people. Your self image will definitely improve.

Help others

This is one of the best ways to boost your self image. Help those who can't repay you. Make someone's day. Help someone out anonymously. There is more joy in giving than in receiving. Perform community service. Donate to the needy. Serve the underprivileged. There are so many ways in which you can brighten someone's life. When you help others, you become more grateful for the things you already have.

In many parts of the world, teachers are highly underpaid. Yet so many people choose to become teachers. This is because their life revolves around helping others. They add value to the lives of so many young people. This is a very rewarding experience. The fact that you are adding so much value to the world drastically boosts your self image.
