5 Good Reasons to Eat Tomatoes

Updated on July 1, 2012

Tomatoes are nutritional superfoods! They are packed with vitamins and nutrients and have numerous health benefits. Below are seven great reasons to include tomatoes in your diet!

Tomatoes are rich in Vitamin C

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that helps produce collagen and strengthens the immune system. Vitamin C helps heal cuts and wounds and helps maintain bones, teeth, gums, and blood vessels. It helps protect against heart disease, stroke, cataracts, and diabetes. Vitamin C is an important antioxidant and helps you properly use other vitamins and minerals such as folic acid and iron. Because vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin, and is not stored in the body, it is important to consume vitamin C-rich foods each day.

Tomatoes are a good source of lutein

1) Lutein is a carotenoid that helps protect against vision loss, cataracts, and macular degeneration. It has also been shown to help prevent cancer and cardiovascular disease. Lutein may also help protect your skin from UV rays, pollutants, and toxins in the environment.

Tomatoes contain phytosterols

Phystosterols are naturally found compounds in plants that inhibit the absorption of cholesterol by your intestines and can be helpful for those trying to lower the amount of bad cholesterol (LDL) in the body.

Tomatoes are a good source of beta-carotene

Beta-carotene is an antioxidant that helps maintain healthy skin and slows the aging process. Beta-carotene can be made into Vitamin A by the body.

Tomatoes are the richest dietary source of lycopene

Lycopene is a potent cancer-fighting antioxidant that becomes even more abundant when tomatoes are cooked. It neutralizes free radicals before they can cause damage. Lycopene has about twice the antioxidant power of beta carotene. Lycopene is fat-soluble so you absorb lycopene well only if you eat it with dietary fat such as olive oil. Lycopene has been linked to preventing cardiovascular disease, skin damage, cancer, osteoporosis, and diabetes. Lycopene has been specifically linked to the prevention of prostate cancer.
