5 Reasons Why We Should All Drink Lemon Water!

Lemons are packed with nourishing elements. If your anything like me, you won't include Lemons in your diet as much as other fruits. A few weeks ago i decided to pour myself a huge glass of hydrating and nourishing freshly squeezed lemon water before i had breakfast. I can now say i can't go with out it! I feel like it wakes my body up and starts it up correctly for the day! For more benefits watch the video i linked below!

Lemons include high levels of:

- vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin A, vitamin E, folate, niacin thiamin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, copper, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, phosphorus and protein.

How?

The water used should be lukewarm and definitely not boiling hot. When its hot, it can reduce the vitamin content of the Lemons and the effect it has to your body. I pour in about half to three quarters cold water, and the rest boiled water, then i squeeze in half a Lemon and its good to go. You can also simply slice some lemon up and place it in your water to. I usually end up using 500ml of water in total and this is enough for me in the morning. I also believe that freezing cold water takes a lot more for the body to process it, so lukewarm is perfect. I also would say it is best to drink it through a straw as its best to reduce the amount it comes into contact with our enamel on your teeth. I have heard that it is best to leave it 15-30 minutes after drinking, however i do not do this as it is difficult for me with early starts!

1- Weight Loss

You see all over the internet the different factors and ways that drinking Lemon water can help weight loss. The main reason will be due to the fact that the fruit contains high levels of pectin fibre, and we know that fibre means filling in which can reduce cravings. People say they end up making better choices throughout the day- which is why it is great to drink it in the morning for weight loss. Another factor is that Lemons balance PH levels in the body, which may be suprising as they are acidic on their own, however when inside our bodies they are alkaline. It is reported that studies have shown people who maintain more of an alkaline diet, loose weight faster. You can see in the picture below, how close the pH of Lemon water is to the stomach acid within our bodies.

Slight disclaimer though, we all know that introducing Lemon water into our daily life will not make you loose 2 pounds a week, however it can contribute and help the process of loosing weight.

2- Clear Skin

This one appealed to me when reading about the benefits of Lemon water, and i can say i did notice the benefits. My skin seemed bright, and blemish free, rather than tired and dull. This is because as we know it has high levels of vitamin C, and other antioxidants, which help decrease wrinkles and blemishes. Lemon water and water in general helps flush out toxins therefore clearing skin, reducing free radicals. The alkaline nature can help kill some acne causing bacteria, and give the skin a nice glow.

3- Energizes

This is a benefit i really did notice from drinking Lemon water, or even water itself. As i had this each morning, i felt revitalised and like i was ready to start the day, meaning my mood was improved as well. The scent of a Lemon is said to be mood enhancing, and to not get into to much complex detail- Lemons contain more negative charged ions, which somehow means your body is provided with more energy when the Lemon enters the digestive tact. On top of this, some say Lemon can help reduce anxiety and depression!

4- Freshen Breath

Another one i really did notice, and what a better reason to drink Lemon water in the morning! They have also been known to reduce tooth pain. If your anything like me you might think due to the citric acid in Lemons, it is best to brush your teeth after you have drunk the water. However it is best to brush before, and definitely not straight after, otherwise the acid can cling to your enamel and when you brush, it can really weaken it. Alternatively though, it is ok to flush your mouth with pure water after drinking, and like i said above it is best to drink it through a straw.

5- Aids Digestion

As mentioned before, Lemon water can flush out any unwanted materials and toxins inside the body. It also encourages the liver to produce bile- which is an acid required for digestion. Good digestion means reduces symptoms of heartburn, belching, and bloating. It is also high in fibre like other fruits- which is essential for good digestion.
