I have been an athlete my entire life. I played organized sports thru college. Now, I am a stay at home mom with 5 children ages, 7,7,5,5 and 2. I currently work out at a local gym.

I have a healthy body image. I accepted recently there are 5 things that will never change by going to the gym.

Will I Grow?

I say I am ONLY 5’8” because I always wanted to be 6’0”. In college, I was considered short. My friends were tall! You always want to be something you are not. Except short, I have never wanted to be short. At the gym you see all types of people working out with all types of bodies. I see the tall girls and I am reminded, I wish I was taller!

I can work out as much as I want. I am not going to grow.

Will My Bones Move?

I actually got stuck trying on a size large sweatshirt. I am a fit, 5’8”. I should be able to get this sweatshirt over my shoulders. I am not sure if the sweatshirt was mislabeled or I am. I was laughing so hard a friend had to help me break free.

I can work out as much as I want. My shoulders are not going to be narrower.

Will I Run Faster?

I have run distance for about 25 years. The best mile I have ever run was about 7 minutes and then I about died. For a 5K, I probably averaged an 8.5 minute mile at my peak training. I am a comfortable 10 minute miler. I can push 9 minutes/mile for shorter distances.

I can work out as much as I want. I am not running a 24 minute 5K (3.1 miles).

Will I Be Able To Dance?

I accidentally went to a cardio jam class thinking it might be just a high tempo cardio class. It was dance. This is super for people who can dance and a great way to burn calories. For those of us who dislike dancing and actually stink at it, this class is a nightmare. I faked left and slipped out the back. Yes, I could practice dancing more and get better. At this point in my life, I don’t feel the need to become less rhythmically challenged.

I can work out as much as I want. I will always be horrible and sneak out of dance style classes.

Will I Wear a Bikini?

I have had 2 sets of twins, 17 months apart. Set one was 12 lbs. collectively. Set 2 was 13 lbs. My OB-GYN told me that skin is amazing and then he laughed. It can stretch more than you think. And like all things, skin has its limits. He explained to me that I damaged my belly skin's elasticity with set 1. He told me I destroyed it with set 2. I can be in the best shape in my life. I can do abs till I pass out.

I can work out as much as I want. My skin is destroyed and I will never wear a 2 piece...but I have some really cute kids!

Healthy Body Image

My list is more than self-deprecating.

I know my body. There are things that I love about it. There are things I like about it. There are things I tolerate. There are days that I waiver. I am like everyone else in the world.

Everything on my list is very obvious. Nothing on this list even surprises me. What can be surprising is how long it can take you to accept the things you understand about yourself.

Know your body. Know what a reasonable expectation is for you.

It is in knowing my body that I don’t disappoint myself as often.

It is in knowing my body that I am happy with myself at the end of each work out because I know I did the best my body can do.

It is in knowing my body that I can achieve my goals.

      Thanks, Nicole, for stumbling onto my hubs today! I enjoy working out, but keeping a reasonable expectation on myself is just as healthy as the exercising!
