Health Benefits of Cabbage

Cabbage is a leafy green vegetable. It is found in many parts of the world. Cabbage has different colours including green, red and brown but the green cabbage is the most common type. Cabbage should not be cooked for a very long time because some of the valuable nutrients are lost in the process. Just like many other vegetables, cabbage has many health benefits and some of them are discussed in this article.

  1. 1. Cabbage is a rich source of vitamin C.

Cabbage is very rich in vitamin C. This vitamin is a water soluble vitamin and it helps the body in the management of cold. Also vitamin C boosts the body immunity and scavenges harmful free radicals. The body also require the presence of vitamin C during the synthesis of collagen in the body. Collagen represents the main structural protein present in the human body. It is also required in maintenance of structural integrity of skin, organs, bones and blood vessels. This makes vitamin C essential in the protection of the human body from scurvy.

  1. 2. Cabbage has an antioxidant property.

The free radicals found in our body cause oxidative damage to protein, lipid and nucleic acid this invariably leads to development of degenerative conditions like cancer. Antioxidants found in cabbage help scavenge these free radicals, and thereby protecting the body against free radical mediated diseases.

This vegetable is one of natural remedies that have been used to treat ulcer. This vegetable helps in maintaining the proper functioning of the gastrointestinal tract. The anti-ulcer properties of cabbage are due to the high glutamine content of it.

Cabbage is low in calories and sodium. It also has a low glycemic index, and high dietary fibre. All these make cabbage a good option for a diabetic person. Also cabbage contains minerals and vitamins making it nutritious.

Cabbage helps clear the body of toxins. This function is due to the presence of vitamin C and sulphur compounds in cabbage. This means that a healthy life is maintained with the consumption of cabbage.

Red cabbage contains anthocyanin(red pigment/color)—antioxidant that can help protect brain cells, thus can help prevent Alzheimer's disease.

This is due to the presence of antioxidants in cabbage. This antioxidants help protect the skin from free radicals that cause damages to the skin. Therefore the consumption of cabbage may be beneficial to skin.
