Health Benefits of Cucumber

Cucumber is a widely cultivated plant belonging to the family Cucurbiataceae. It is a creeping vine bearing a cylindrical edible fruit when ripe. It has a dark green rind and white succulent flesh. This plant is originally from India but it has been cultivated in most parts of the world. Cucumber fruit is consumed as food but it also has many health benefits not know by many people. Some this health benefits are discussed below.

  1. 1. Cucumber promotes hair growth

Cucumber juice has been shown to promote hair growth, it strengthen the hair and increase its volume. This is due to the high silicon and sulphur content of cucumber. This function of cucumber fruit is enhanced when its juice is added to the juice of carrot, lettuce and spinach.

  1. 2. Cucumber helps to prevent splitting of nails of the fingers and toes.

This is due to the high mineral content of this fruit. The high silica content of cucumber has been said to be responsible for this function. Also this high silica content is essential for the appropriate construction of tissues in the body, including the ligaments, cartilage, tendons and the bones.

Cucumber contain high amount of water (about 96% of water content) and this makes it an efficient means of keeping the body hydrated. Another benefit of cucumber water content to ordinary water is that cucumber water is more nutritious. Thus eating cucumber hydrates the body and also regulates body temperature. High amount of water in the body also means that more toxins are flushed out of the body system.

Cucumber contains high amount of vitamin C. The vitamin C presents in it helps the body develop resistance against infectious agents and therefore boost the body immune system. Also the body requires the presence of vitamin C during the production of collagen in the body. Collagen is one of the structural proteins present in the body and it is required in the maintenance of structural integrity of the skin, bone, organs and blood vessels. This makes cucumber a vital ingredient in many cream and packs. It has also been reported that rubbing cucumber on skin help makes it soft, smooth and supple.

Swelling around the eye is greatly reduced by applying cucumber to the affected area(s). Many people have used cucumber to improve the health conditions of their eyes and also some people use it to reduce the dark circles around the eyes.

Cucumber fruit contains erepsin—an enzyme that helps in digesting protein.

This function has been attributed to the presence of minerals like potassium in cucumber. Potassium has the ability to regulate the blood pressure.
