7 Life Practices that Can Help You Get Through a Serious Health Crisis

Updated on June 21, 2015

Do Not Ignore The Body's Signals!

In 2009, Yolanda developed low back pain so grievous that she could not stand upright. She had no alternative but to walk bent over facing downwardly. She was afraid of getting medical help for fear of bad news about her health. She encountered stiffness and mild pain in her low back in the past.

Typically, the discomfort resolved on its own but not this particular time. Yolanda used her routine common home remedies, but this time was different. There was no relief at all. She did not want to take time off from work. She had many responsibilities and felt things would fall apart in the office in her absence. Yolanda struggled to perform her daily routine hunched over for three months.

~Author Unknown, "A bend in the road is not the end of the road unless you fail to make the turn."

Finally, Yolanda made an appointment with a chiropractor a friend recommended. After several tests and x-rays, she received a diagnosis of sciatica.

What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica represents general irritation or compression of one of five sciatic nerve roots of the spine. Sciatica causes pain in the low back and buttock. It causes weakness and numbness in various regions of the lower extremities affected. The degree of pain felt during an episode can be mild to debilitating.

Below is an image of the extent of inflammation caused from sciatica.

Beware of Muscle Atrophy!

Another condition that can develop is muscle atrophy, which is a decrease in muscle mass due to little or no activity. Yolanda worked long hours and neglected her health. Inactivity for lengthy periods of time can cause muscles to waste away. Realized that she had more control over her health and fitness.

She made up her mind to make her health a top priority.

Obesity is a common factor that can exacerbate the condition. She was more than 50 pounds overweight at the time. Yolanda got into action and tried various forms of fitness to determine what she liked best. Physical fitness is a lifestyle, and it is important to look forward to exercise periods. She tried various of activities, but she discovered that her passion was for running.

~Harry Golden expressed, "The only thing that overcomes hard luck is hard work."

Wellness Is Invaluable!

It does not matter what a person aspires to gain or what he or she possesses. Without good health, material things afford little value. Yolanda made significant changes in her lifestyle, which resulted in increased energy and positive mood. She enjoys running marathons today.

In 2013, a research study revealed that individuals who encountered the highest degree of hardship and trauma also developed considerable personal growth and increased resilience. For those who would like to learn more about the study, the analysis is available at psycnet.apa.org/journals/aca/7/3/245.

Albert Einstein said, "Adversity introduces a man to himself."

There is an inspiring story about a former network news, a war journalist who was able to rehab himself from life-threatening health concerns by way of overhauling his mind and body. His story substantiates the fact that trials and challenges can descend on us all at once, but the choices made to handle critical periods in life make the difference.

The founder of Deep Yoga, based in San Diego, Brad Willis, also known as Bhava Ram encountered quite a few challenges that could have best most people. He discovered inner strength and resilience that transformed his body and mind. His story is a must read.

Here are seven life-changing practices to help overcome adversity:

  1. No matter how hopeless things may appear, take charge of the situation. Do not let the circumstances take control.
  2. Identify strengths and weaknesses in character. Personal strengths can carry a person through, and weaknesses can fortify conviction to overcome the odds.
  3. Develop clear intentions. Create a Mantra! Repeat it daily!
  4. Connect with the purpose at hand. The determination can help a person focus on the objective with clarity.
  5. Allow for quiet time for reflection. Meditation/prayer is a powerful anchor during a health crisis. Nourish the mind with inspirational information to provide sustenance and also give thanks!
  6. Take action and get active! Make health and fitness a top priority.
  7. Be present without exception in every regard of life. Embrace the life experience with enthusiasm and peace.

Human beings have an uncanny ability to harness mental energy during critical periods in life. It is an innate gift that helps a person during a health crisis or any other challenge to keep going and not quit.
