7 Tips to Be Beautiful At Any Age - Regardless of Wrinkles and Sagging Body Parts
I feel the wrinkles coming! I’m approaching my thirties and I know they will show up any day now. And now I have two things to worry about: wrinkles and feeling shallow because I worry about wrinkles.
But, can you blame me? We live in a world so obsessed with youth that the moment a woman starts losing her looks she feels disposable. I don’t like that mentality, and yet I fall prey to it every day.
How to feel pretty at any age
Sad as it may be, the reality is that we begin losing our looks as we age. This affects men and women alike, but apparently men (even if they’re old and wrinkly) get better with age as I’m being informed right this minute by the Most Interesting Man in the World appearing in my TV.
It shouldn’t be any different for women. Yes, we will get wrinkles and parts of our body may start sagging, but that shouldn’t make us feel any less beautiful and special. Let’s go through some ideas that will help us keep hot - and confident- as we age.
Is cosmetic surgery the answer?
Do you think cosmetic surgery is the only way to feel beautiful?
Beautiful is an attitude
Some of my mom’s friends show me pictures of when they were younger. Some of them were astonishingly beautiful! They were well dressed, their make up was intact and they had a beautiful smile that decorated their face better than the most expensive make up. I look at them now and everything is gone. They’re no longer well dressed, it’s been years since they last plucked their eyebrows and the smile that could brighten a black hole is long gone. What happened?
Their attitude changed! They no longer felt beautiful so at some point in their lives they stopped trying. Granted, we can’t do anything to stop time, but we can do a lot with our appearance. Let’s start there.
Extra tips for feeling and staying young
- Stay away from anything that makes you older: alcohol, tobacco, lack of sleep
- Always, always wash your face at night. Never sleep with make up on.
- Always use moisturizer and sun protection.
- Drink lots of water so your skin stay hydrated.
Tip # 1: Always smile
One thing that time can’t take away from us is our smile. And guess what? A constant smile in your face can make you look years younger. Find things to smile about and keep a positive attitude. This in itself can do wonders for your appearance.
Tip #2: Don’t be afraid of facial expressions
Look at a child play for 5 minutes and try to keep count of how many different facial expression she makes in that time. Kids aren’t afraid to show their feelings with their face. If they’re surprised, happy or ecstatic their face will show it.
For some reason, as we age we start losing the desire to make facial expressions. I knew a lady who would avoid crinkling her eyes and mouth when she smiled because she was afraid of developing fine lines. Her smile and laughter looked like she was constantly trying to fit a huge tube in her mouth.
Remember, young people express feelings with their face. Do the same!
Tip # 3: Posture says a lot about you!
I once took a cartoon drawing class. We were learning to draw bodies, and our teacher was very emphatic on something: If you want your character to look young, make him stand up straight and with a spring in her step. If you want your character to look old, draw him hunched over.
Walk tall and proud. Our posture reveals how we feel about ourselves. Don’t let age lower your self esteem. Walk with your head up tall and straight and show the world that age has nothing on you!
Tip # 4: Be nice to yourself.
Don’t start the day saying:
“Look at a that face, one more wrinkle and I can play the role of a raisin in any movie.”
Be positive and wake up each day feeling grateful that you are alive. Many that died young didn’t get that privilege.
Tip # 5: Hygiene and grooming never get old
Just because you’re getting older doesn’t mean you have to stop showering or washing your hair. Remember when you were a teenager? A shower was mandatory every day or what would your friends think? (OMG!)
One of the perks of growing older is that we stop caring about what others think. But one of the disadvantages of growing older is that we stop caring about what others think. Don’t let that happen to you. Keep clean, pluck your eyebrows, shave your legs and brush your hair.
Tip # 6: Clothes can make a world of difference
Don’t start dressing “your age” (whatever that means). Dress young. Of course, I don’t mean show your belly button, pierce your eyebrows, or dye your hair pink, although if that’s your style then ignore what I just said.
Keep your wardrobe up to date. You don’t need to spend tons of money on clothes. Go to the thrift shop. You’ll be surprised at the deals you will find: new clothes, brand names and endless styles and ways to match your clothes.
If you’re a fashion neophyte, ask a younger friend to join you, or watch shows and read magazines on the subject. It’s never too late to learn something new.
Tip # 7: Beautiful is all in your head
Self confidence is beauty, and no one can make you feel self-confident but yourself. Don’t let one day go without counting your blessings and the many ways in which your body has carried you safely through life. Love your body, it's receptacle of your soul that has made it possible for you to enjoy the hug of a loved one and the many beauties life has to offer.
Never forget that life is beautiful of how old you are. The older you get, the more wisdom you have to offer, and wise is always beautiful.
