Complexity of the Shoulder - Two Bones and a Socket and Ligaments and Tendons and More!

The shoulder is comprised of two main bones: the scapula (shoulder blade) and the humerus (the long bone of the upper arm).

At the end of the scapula bone is a socket which fits forming a flexible ball-and-socket joint. The shoulder joint is cushioned by cartliage.

Ligaments connect the bones of the shoulder.

Tendons join the bones of the shoulder to surrounding muscles.

The biceps tendon stabilizes the joint by attaching the biceps muscle to the bones in the shoulder.

The complexity of the shoulder doesn't end there - four muscles originate on the scapula bone wrap around the shoulder and the tendons fuse in a tapestry to form the "rotator cuff".

In anatomy, the scapula, omo (Medical Latin), or shoulder blade, is the bone that connects the humerus (upper arm bone) with the clavicle (collar bone).

Protect the Shoulder from Injury with Muscle

Protecting the shoulder from injury is the same as protecting the knees - building up the muscle is helps protect the joint.

When an injury occurs to the shoulder, and the inflamed tissue has increased fluid between the cells it is critical to start movement right away. The goal of gentle stretching and strengthening and the anti-inflammatory medication is to stimulate the cells to lay down collagen along the lines of the stress thus forming normal strong tendons.

As always a good exercise program includes a good warm up, gentle stretching and strengthening. Strengthen below the "limits of pain". Icing after a workout combined with anti-inflammatory medication has been shown to accelerate recovery time.

      This hub was very helpful with its diagrams and videos. I'm doing all but one of the pillars: resistance. I've just gotten back into swimming, so I'll be looking to incorporate your suggestions. One of the areas I want to tone is my arms (triceps), and I love a well sculpted shoulder/back.

      The triceps are especially problematic for us females. I always work on my abs and my triceps. The assisted chin dip/pull up machine is one of my favorites in the gym. I call it the "reverse" weight machine because the less weight you designate is how to increase your resistance.

      My swim fitness clients once they understood the reverse machine loved it. That and the captains chair for the abs. Sadly the water instructors hardly ever cross promote land and visa versa. I love both and appreciate both. I felt guilty for years because I felt was being disloyal but then I realized the two really cross promote and strengthen the knowledge base of fitness.
