Updated on March 25, 2016

Nothing is sexier than toned arms and shoulders. Kathy Lee Gifford and Michelle Obama favor sleeveless dresses to showcase their hard work - and rightfully so. Sexy shoulder are beautiful and healthy too! The shoulder is a complex joint actually made of two bones held together with tendons and muscles to allow a wide range of motion for the arm. The range of motion of the arm is critical to every day movements. The strength of the arms and the shoulders helps us with every day chores. Combine these facts with the new research showcasing that we are losing muscle tone as we age - sarcopenia and we need to stand up and take notice now.

Journey with us as we explore the complexity of the shoulder, various land exercise and three great swim fitness exercises to take your sexy shoulder workout to the water.

Target Toning Help Speed Metabolism and Assist with Weight Loss

Fitness is fivefold - diet, cardio, flexibility (stretching), aerobics and target toning or resistance training. Our bodies are a complicated tapestry of over 640 muscles plus various joints, ligaments and tendons. The quickest way to lose weight and get in shape is to follow all five fitness pillars. One of the simplest is target toning the shoulders and upper back in the water. Use the water for resistance.

Water Excels at Resistance for the Arms and Shoulders

Toning and stretching the various muscles of the shoulder could not be better than in the water. The water offer 360 degree of resistance. Add the high quality fitness tool such as the EZ Swimmer and you now have a dynamite workout - right in the swimming pool.

Sidenote: Frozen Shoulder

"Frozen shoulder, an excruciatingly painful condition known medically as adhesive capsulitis, affects two million people in Britain.

Diabetics and women aged 40-60 are particularly at risk.

The condition is caused by inflammation in the shoulder joint lining, but what triggers this is unknown."Read more: Unlocking-frozen-shoulder

Complexity of the Shoulder - Two Bones and a Socket and Ligaments and Tendons and More!

The shoulder is comprised of two main bones: the scapula (shoulder blade) and the humerus (the long bone of the upper arm).

At the end of the scapula bone is a socket which fits forming a flexible ball-and-socket joint. The shoulder joint is cushioned by cartliage.

Ligaments connect the bones of the shoulder.

Tendons join the bones of the shoulder to surrounding muscles.

The biceps tendon stabilizes the joint by attaching the biceps muscle to the bones in the shoulder.

The complexity of the shoulder doesn't end there - four muscles originate on the scapula bone wrap around the shoulder and the tendons fuse in a tapestry to form the "rotator cuff".

"Four short muscles that originate on the scapula pass around the shoulder where their tendons fuse together to form the rotator cuff."

In anatomy, the scapula, omo (Medical Latin), or shoulder blade, is the bone that connects the humerus (upper arm bone) with the clavicle (collar bone).

And in complete English:

Shoulder blade (scapula) is the bone that connects to the collar bone (clavicle).

Muscle Loss - Sarcopenia

“…sarcopenia – “a very under-recognised area that is attracting huge interest from scientists” – steals an average one-fifth of a pound of muscle a year from the mid-20s and adopts an almost parasitic speediness after the age of 50, bleeding the body of up to one pound of muscle a year…”

Often it goes unnoticed because the muscle lost is typically replaced by fat.

Land Push Ups

Protect the Shoulder from Injury with Muscle

Protecting the shoulder from injury is the same as protecting the knees - building up the muscle is helps protect the joint.

When an injury occurs to the shoulder, and the inflamed tissue has increased fluid between the cells it is critical to start movement right away. The goal of gentle stretching and strengthening and the anti-inflammatory medication is to stimulate the cells to lay down collagen along the lines of the stress thus forming normal strong tendons.

As always a good exercise program includes a good warm up, gentle stretching and strengthening. Strengthen below the "limits of pain". Icing after a workout combined with anti-inflammatory medication has been shown to accelerate recovery time.

Shoulder injuries are common from age 40 to age 60..[dailymail.uk]. Shoulder injuries include frozen shoulder and tendinitis.

Land - Push Up - 66.4% of Your Body Weight

"Researchers in one American trial showed that, on average, 66.4 per cent of body weight is lifted with each push-up. So if you weigh 70kg you are heaving a mighty 43kg – far more than you would on a bench-press machine. Balance on your toes and hands, pressing your palms into the floor and keeping your hands just wider than shoulder-width apart."[citation http://4pack.workpress.com]

Performing push ups on land is difficult. Performing push ups or rather push downs with the EZ Swimmer is customized to your own body mass index. The EZ Swimmer allows you to work at your level.

Why Do Push-Ups? More Resistance Than a Bench Press

Swim Fitness Push Downs with the Fitness Tool Called EZ Swimmer

Water Aerobics EZ Swimmer Push Downs™

The amount of resistance with the EZ Swimmer push down is much less than the 66% of your body weight. The resistance provided is a combination of the displacement of the water from the fitness tool, the amount of the buoyancy of the fitness tool and the effective BMI of your body.

Even thought the resistance level is much less, don't underestimate the effectiveness. The water is often underrated for its abilities to help with fitness. Resistance training, target toning offers an excellent workout for the entire body.

Aquajogger has detailed that the water provides up to 12 times the resistance of air and this is without any fitness tool - just using the water for resistance.

Water Aerobics EZ Swimmer's Sexy Shoulders

Target toning the arms and the shoulders include three exercises - push-ups, triceps and the hummingbird movement in conjunction with the advanced exercise called the Seated Balance.

Swim Fitness - Sexy Shoulders - Combine Three Exercises

Combining the three exercises of push downs, triceps with the hummingbird offers a great breadth of training, target toning and much needed added strength and muscle.

Swim Fitness Hummingbird Movement = Land's Reverse Fly

The hummingbird movement with the EZ Swimmer and the Seated Balance exercise is most similar in movement and contracted muscles of what is known on land as the "reverse fly".

Target Tone Biceps, Triceps, Shoulders and Back - Team Effort

Just as land exercise demand a multitude of movements to achieve sexy shoulders and arms, so too, swim fitness provides a multitude of exercises to activate and tone those muscles.

For the triceps, it is the resistance of the fitness tool and your body weight that provides the resistance; likewise, for the push downs. For the reverse flies or the hummingbird exercise, the only resistance is the water and the speed by which you move your arms through the water.

Whether on land or in the comfortable swimming pool water, It is a multitude of exercises that provide the strength and safety that our shoulder joint needs.

      Denise,

The triceps are especially problematic for us females. I always work on my abs and my triceps. The assisted chin dip/pull up machine is one of my favorites in the gym. I call it the "reverse" weight machine because the less weight you designate is how to increase your resistance.

My swim fitness clients once they understood the reverse machine loved it. That and the captains chair for the abs. Sadly the water instructors hardly ever cross promote land and visa versa. I love both and appreciate both. I felt guilty for years because I felt was being disloyal but then I realized the two really cross promote and strengthen the knowledge base of fitness.

Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing. It really means allot to me.

This hub was very helpful with its diagrams and videos. I'm doing all but one of the pillars: resistance. I've just gotten back into swimming, so I'll be looking to incorporate your suggestions. One of the areas I want to tone is my arms (triceps), and I love a well sculpted shoulder/back.
