Healthy and Balanced Food Diet

The macrobiotic diet is a dietary plan which emphasizes both a healthy balanced food diet and a healthy lifestyle. The diet, which comprises primarily brown rice, other whole grains and an assortment of vegetables, is thought to have the same benefits as a vegetarian diet. The term macrobiotics derives from the Greek words macro (great) and bios (life), which together mean great life. Studies have proved that a macrobiotic diet can reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and stroke.

The macrobiotic diet, which is high in dietary fiber, vitamins, and low in fatty foods, assigns two energies to foods (yin; outward energy, and yang; inward energy) which although they have opposite energies, when they are complemented, they can reach a harmonious balance. Experts believe that a diversity of diseases strikes the human body due to a variation of yin and yang and that a macrobiotic diet assists at restoring this imbalance. The balance between yin and yang also helps achieve inner peace.

Macrobiotic Foods

Foods, such as fish, poultry, meat, hard cheeses, and eggs are viewed yang, while fruit juice, milk, cream, alcohol, and sugar are considered as yin. The macrobiotic diet consist of foods that aren´t either, yin or yang, but a combination of the two, in other words, foods that do not have too much yin or yang. Among these foods are brown rice, whole grains, beans, fruits, nuts, and vegetables, including fish occasionally...

One of the ideas behind macrobiotics is that people interested in a macrobiotic diet should start ingesting foods that are native to their surroundings, so as to correspond to their natural environment and climate and avoid the metabolic alterations that arise when the foods are from a different climate area. Another idea is that food should be changed according to the season, for example in spring the food has to be lighter, and require less cooking, while in winter these foods are to be more abundant and require more cooking.

Supporters of the diet claim that the diet can help cure cancer, although, there is no scientific evidence to support the idea. People use the diet to treat diseases, including stroke, diabetes, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, and other diseases from the heart. These and many more diseases are believed to occur when the yin and yang are not in harmony. Supporters of the diet assure that a macrobiotic diet can restore the imbalance. That is thought to produce those diseases.

Lifestyle Practices

The appropriate lifestyle practices to follow according to macrobiotics include chewing food completely to digest and absorb nutrients more effectively; consuming only organic foods; eating two to three meals a day and avoiding meals three hours before bedtime; taking frequent baths as needed; practicing stretching exercises, such as yoga, dance , or martial arts; walking outdoors for at least thirty minutes every day; maintaining circulation of air inside the house by keeping windows open, as well as placing green plants throughout the house to improve the oxygen content.

There aren´t specific guidelines to serve as guides for the implementation of the diet; however, it is recommended to switch to a macrobiotic diet gradually rather than at once. If followed strictly, the diet may result deficient in some nutrients, including, protein, vitamin B12, calcium, and iron. The diet is not recommended for people suffering from intestinal disorders, or who are allergic to cereal grain.
