A Sad Sad Day

HOLLY McDOW

Source

A GOOD FRIEND OF MINE HOLLY MCDOW

Holly passed away Sunday, February 17, 2013.

It terrified me when I heard that my one of best friends had only three months to live.

You see, in November, she was diagnosed with cancer and she died three months after.

She was only 59 years old. two years younger than me...

The cancer was eating her alive! It had started in her lungs and found that it had spread quickly throughout her stomach and other regions of her body. The cancer had also spread to her right arm where it broke her arm in two different places. Her arm and hand were swollen; just looking at it made me feel sick to my stomach. Holly started going downhill very quickly; she had blood clots in her head and in her legs. I was told; her doctor had to give her morphine for her pain every two hours, it got so bad. Plus, she would awake screaming in the middle of the night.

She died right in front of our very eyes….

Holly had gotten elected to Alderwoman in her County. She was so proud and excited.

It was an exciting day to be sworn in for her, but just a couple of months later she was dead.

February 19, 2013 Holly McDow: I pay (homage) to Holly.

Holly was faithful and a hard- working person; I guess you could say that she was a trooper. She was a big supporter in fighting breast cancer. Every year, she would work longer hours to raise money and walked for hours for the cause. She would often rally her troops including me. The cause that she worked so hard to fight was the very thing that killed her so 'mercilessly' in the end. Even so, I made a promise to continue to fight this insidious disease called cancer.

Please help me to do so in her memory….

Here are links to Breast Cancer Awareness sites…

http://www.thebreastcancersite.com/clickToGive/home.faces?siteId=2

There are so many different ways to be aware and help with this deadly disease.

Ladies have regular breast exams and mammograms.

DO NOT FORGET!

If you smoke please quit….. Your loved ones and friends and all of us from the HUB want you around a little longer….. Please quit! We love you!!!

It breaks my heart to see my loved ones smoke…..

They all know that’s what killed my sister those stupid cigarettes, and Like Holly by the time the doctors found the cancer it was too late and it killed her fast. In fact, when they tried to operate on my sister she had went into a comma and never woke up.

I never got to say goodbye to her……

http://www.lungcanceralliance.org/get-involved/help-raise-awareness/

Here is a site to help raise money to fight this dreaded disease.

http://www.lungcanceralliance.org/get-involved/help-increase-lung-cancer-research/

This is the research site.

I don’t know what we can do but maybe as a group we can do something….

I hate this disease…. I know you do too….

Everyone has been affected by this disease one way or another. Someone close to you has died from it or someone you know.

Whatever the case may be…. We need to do something.

The sadness in this world can be overwhelming but just be reassured there is hope!

The best hope comes from Jesus, Our Lord.

But He would want us to do something. Not sit back and say someone else will do it……

Like Billy Buc says get off your butt and do something. Get a hold of your lives and help others too.

This is so important.

Don’t feel sorry for yourselves…. Just do something.

I challenge you to give a donation to your local chapter of Cancer awareness and research… Whether it is Lungs or breast cancer or whatever…..

Just give or walk in the rally’s and help raise money…. Let’s help each other. Let’s help others. Spread the word.

God bless each one of you. I know you all have hearts of gold. And have a love for your fellow human beings….

No matter where you live I know you care, all over this world we all care….

If you want to help or have helped or are going to help and know of a good site better than the ones I posted please post your remarks here and the site….

This hub is dedicated to Holly McDow and all those that have lost the fight to cancer.

God Bless you all

Debbie

I am so saddened by the death of your friend. It frustrates me no end that these cancers are eating away our precious people when so much of our tax dollar is spent on STUFF.

this topic is so very close to my heart...my daughter and grandson both have cancer and we are living with it each day.

My heart and prayers and Angels are coming to you, Debbie, and to all who face this scourge. ps

So sorry to hear of Holly's death, Deborah. She seemed to be a wonderful angel. A dear friend of mine has recently received news of a rare cancer. She is taking chemo and doing well so far. It seems unfair it happens to such wonderful people. However, facing life with positive attitude and faith does help.

Thank you, Debbie. Abundant health is surely the greatest of blessings. It's such a sadness when someone we love loses it. I cared for my beloved George for 7 years as his dwindled away, though not through cancer.

I've thought of your friend suffering with such pain & have tried to imagine it. It hurts just to think of it.

I think of you missing her. Hugs.

Very beautiful tribute to your passing friend and your friends here at Hp. My sister-in-law died of lung cancer that spread to different body parts and she was given morphine the last while of it. I loved her so much and it was really hard to not be able to do a thing as I know you must have felt too.

      Dear, dear Debbie,

What a beautiful and rousing tribute to your beloved friend. And activism is a most fitting response! How wonderful that you summoned the strength and courage to be with her, despite the horror and anguish. That is friendship at its finest & most faithful. I have had two NDEs or Near Death Experiences, where I was pronounced dead and went into the Light. So, it comes from my heart when I say you gave your parting friend the greatest gift - of being there - and she let you stand with her on holy ground as she entered the Light. Hold on, not to the loss, but to the love; not to the sad passing, but to your precious memories...Blessings, L.

Oh, Debbie - I'm truly choked up and teary over this. Losing someone one loves is always difficult, but Holly's whole body being consumed by that horrible disease so painfully and quickly is much worse. I can only imagine how terrible it's been for you and all her loved ones to witness it and to lose her.

I've not personally been associated with it. My George's first wife died with lung cancer and family members of friends have had or died with various forms of it, but my intimate circle has been spared that. All devastating diseases are tragic, though.

Smoking - yes - what an insidious killer! My daughter smokes & it breaks my heart. Some of my grandkids do, as well. If I could, I'd ban those instruments of death forever. I tried it once (at age 12) and luckily it was so horrible, I never wanted to do it again - and never have. All I'd have to do is picture all that ugly smoke circulating through lungs and passages and leaving its nasty residue everywhere, to stifle any desire if I had any for it.

We need to practice the best health habits we possibly can, not only to live long, but to live well for as long as we do live. Everything we put into and do to our bodies presents them with either help or obstacles. After so many obstacles a toll is taken. It's just reality.

I applaud your rallying to boost the efforts to prevent and treat these dreadful diseases and to spread the word that we have to help ourselves by healthful choices every day.

My deepest sympathy for the loss of your dear friend and such a wonderful person. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I am so sorry for your loss... loosing a friend or loved one to this terrible disease seems to be epidemic these days. The horror of finding out someone you love has cancer is only exceeded by the horror that is faced by the cancer victim themself. This year alone I have had 2 family members diagnosed with horrific cancers, and several friends as well.

My heart goes out to you and yours and to Holly's family as well... and I commit to continue working helping raise funds to finally find a way to beat this disease in all its terrible forms.

Peace to you my friend. I'm sharing this important Hub.

Cancer is vicious and cruel, and knows no prejudice in its victims. I lost both of my parents to this dreaded disease, as well as my first husband, long before their time. It has hurt the lives of so many in terrible ways. I share your grief, Debbie, on the loss of your friend. She would be so touched by this warm and cherished tribute to her memory. I hope that people continue to give to cancer research, and to raising awareness on how we can take better care of ourselves to help avoid falling victim to this disease. Hugs, Deb.

      Hi Debbie,

I am so sorry that your good friend lost her life to the very disease that she was doing so much to help conquer. Seems ironic. We never know what is written in our book of life until the last pages are turned. Thanks for doing your part in raising awareness of battling cancer and also featuring other Hubbers who are writing good hubs of their own. Up and useful votes and will share.

What a beautiful tribute to your friend, Holly. She sounds like a beautiful person. There is no way to describe the physical and emotional impact cancer has. I know this first hand from my experience with ovarian cancer and try to write articles to help people minimize the risk or to help those going through it have an easier time. I think anyone that has experienced it personally is eager to help others as you are doing by writing this. I still hope to see a cure one day so people no longer have to suffer.

      Hi Debbie,

Yes, I agree. I don't smoke. Smoking is very for your health. I was reading about lung cancer last night and how it's the leading cause of cancer death in the U.S for both men and women.

Yes, this is a sad, sad story. I am so sorry you lost your dear friend. I, too, have lost friends and loved one to this horrible disease. With all the research that has been done on cancer, one would think a cure could be found. My niece was just diagnosed with breast cancer. She will have chemo and radiation, but I am worried for her.

      Voted UP, etc.

Dearest Debbie, I think the more awareness one brings the better of course, as in my personal experience, I had missed one year of my mammogram, and there you go. So, I want to stress the importance to all women everywhere, the importance of getting that mammogram each year.

God bless you dear friend. I am praying for you and your friend's family.

In our little town where I live, our Mayor, who was a wonderful person and great Mayor, came knocking on our door one day with his precious small children/grandchildren, and looking as though in perfect health, and within the next week or two it seemed like, I received a text from my pastor to please pray for our Mayor as he has pancreatic cancer. Then one week later he died just that quick. It is all so very sad indeed.

      Hugs, Faith Reaper

sen.sush23 thank you for doing what you can do making people aware that cigarettes kill.. it must be a hard and tiring job.. a good job when people listen and they take heed.. but when they don't and walk away and choose cigarettes over life is so sad.

      God bless you my friend

Oddly, I just wrote about death today. I am sorry for your loss. There is very little that I can say to make you feel better. All I can do is pray for you and the friend you lost, and ask you to spend some time celebrating her life and friendship.

      blessings my dear,

      bill

Debbie, I'm so sorry about the loss of your best friend. Cancer is unfortunately a horrible disease and if it's not detected early, then it starts progressing quickly destroying cancer cells and attacking other parts of the body. God Bless. you did a fantastic job writing this hub. thank you for raising awareness.

Oh my dearest and sweetest friend, Debbie,

I am so very sorry for the loss of your dear friend. This is a beautiful tribute. Yes, cancer has touched the lives of all, I am sure. I have had family members to die from cancer, and I am a breast cancer survivor---praise Him! I just had my semi-annual mammogram and it was clear. Since I have had cancer, I have to now go twice a year.

Thanks for the great links provided dear, and we all should do something!

      Making sure this gets shared!

God bless you. You are in my thoughts and prayers always. Love you, Faith Reaper

Hi Debbie, I am so sorry to hear of this horrible news about your friend. Cancer SUCKS! There is no other way to say it. You are a strong friend, and this hub is heart touching. My wife had a scare a few months ago when a spot was seen on her pancrease. After several tests and a bi-opsy, the Lord gave us great news. It was just an abnormality, and not anything serious.

My heart goes out to you,

      Chris

Debbie, coming from a corporate work environment, I am constantly exposed to passive smoking and though I try very hard, without sounding prissy, to help my juniors and colleagues kick off the habit of smoking, sometimes I win and sometimes not. My condolences to you, on your loss. I have suffered personal loss from cancer- my grandmother and uncle both were claimed by the deadly disease. Yes, we must all become more aware and make our loved ones aware too.
