ARTHRITIS ! Copper Coins on the feet and Research in the Labs to tackle this crippling disease

Updated on November 28, 2013

ARE WE ON THE BRINK OF A REAL BREAKTHROUGH ?

My most read Hub , by some considerable margin, related to the discovery made by a sufferer some little time ago, that he received good pain relief by simply sewing COPPER COINS into the soles of his socks. It appears that as the feet sweat naturally when wearing socks and shoes, the chemical reaction between the sweat produced and the copper in the coins produces a pain reliever that is easily and swiftly absorbed through the soles of the feet into the body.

The interest this has generated has amazed me, but further research into the condition we term ARTHRITIS, shows that it is without doubt a condition which is right up there with the worst of human suffering conditions.

In the UK ,for example, over 10 million people are sufferers and 1 in every 5 visits to a GP surgery relates to this condition which is said to cost the NHS over £ 5.2 BILLION on an annual basis. No wonder then that sufferers turn to relief from the cheapest way available and insert copper coins in their socks. Reports suggest that there is relief to be found here just as with prescribed drugs, but even so it is just the SYMPTOM that is being treated and not the CAUSE. Recently published reports of modern research however, now give hope that before long treatment for the causes will be available.

For that to happen, the causes have first to be discovered and this is where currently there is new excitement and hope abounding.

FINDING THE CAUSE OF THE CONDITION.

For many years now, it has been known that the root of the arthritic pain in knees and hips, the areas which are most afflicted by Arthritis, lies in the degeneration and ultimate wearing away of the cartilage in the joints. Cartilage is the body "Shock Absorber ". Once the cartilage degenerates and finally wears away, the bones rub together when the body attempts mobilisation, resulting in a swelling of the joints and an increase in friction. Net result being agonising pain in many, many cases.

It is thus, not unreasonable to find that past and present treatments have settled on the symptoms, i.e. the pain and relief of same, rather than identifying the cause for it in the first place. The relly exciting news is that now, Scientists are confident that they know why cartilage degenerates and wears away.

Apparently this is all caused by a PROTEIN ! Called MLKL, this protein can be generated by a virus and once active attecks cells and kills them off as an ongoing process called NECROPTOSIS.

THE EFFECT OF THIS ACTIVITY IS TO ALERT THE BODY IMMUNE SYSTEM WHICH RESPONDS BY GENERATING INFLAMATION. THE RESULT PAIN BUILDS IN THE AFFECTED CELL AREA. THIS IS THE CONDITION WE ALL KNOW AS ARTHRITIS.

However, the activity is not only related to Arthritis because it also relates to Crohn"s Disease, Inflammed Bowel conditions and Psoriasis. This adds 11 million sufferers ,all of which have an identical trigger spot, namely MLKL PROTEIN..

ARMED WITH THIS NEW INFORMATION ,SCIENTISTS ARE NOW WORKING ON TESTS AND RESEARCH TO SEEK TREATMENTS TO HELP SUFFERERS.

At this stage, it is " HOPED" that within say, 5 years time, complinants visiting their GP will be given, in surgery, a blood or urine test to enable the presence of MLKL or not. The current problem is that the condition is not diagnosed until too much wearing away of cartilage has taken place. In the future it is hope that information up to 10 years earlier will provide the basis to prevent cartilage degeneration and thus, eradicate the problem of Arthritis totally over time.

SELF HELP IS STILL VITAL.

All the above is a long way from our humble copper coins and socks treatment for pain relief but even with the huge advances of Medical Science both now and to come, the need for the individual to accept responsibility for their own health still counts.

MedicaL Research in Holland has produced clear and direct links between Arthritis and Diet / Excercise. Those who are overweight are more prone to OSTEOARTHRITIS than those with a lower and thus better, Body Mass Index.

As indicated earlier, Arthritis is most common in Knees and Hips. It is said that in UK alone over 75,000 knees and 65,000 hips are annually treated and/or replaced. The Dutch research shows that OBESE people suffer higher levels of pain from the condition, whilst in the USA,

RESEARCH HAS REVEALED THAT 50% REDUCTIONS IN PAIN LEVELS ARE RECORDED WHEN SUFFERERS FOLLOW A STRICT DIET AND EXCERCISE PROGRAMME.

The above, as ever, confirms the importance of PARTNERSHIP in dealing with medical problems. What the Doctors and Consultants do is important for sure but what they do with the full cooperation and support of the patient and those close to the patient, is vital.

For now let us all support those striving to develop treatments for the CAUSES of Arthritis, whilst continuing to use methods, like our Copper Coined Socks, to alleviate the symptoms.

If you have not yet read the Hub on using Copper Coins for Arthritis, can I invite you to join close on 2,000 others who have already done so. After that, your comments will be most appreciated.
