ARTHRITIS ! HOW THE YOUNG CAN BE AFFLICTED AS WELL AS THE OLDER GENERATION

Updated on November 27, 2012

FOOD IDENTIFIED AS THE STRANGEST POSSIBLE CAUSE

My most read Hub by some distance was entitled "Arthritis. Can Simple Copper Coins Provide The Cure ". For those who have not read it, and it is still accessible on Hub Pages, the thrust of it was the discovery by a sufferer that inserting pure copper coins in the inner soles of his shoes produced a remarkable improvement in this most crippling of conditions. Now I am revisiting Arthritis but from a totally different aspect and one until I read about this weekend was something I was not aware of at all.

I, like many, have long held the view that Arthritis was a condition that generally, if not totally, afflicted the more elderly. I suppose this stems from the fact that my first knowledge, as a child of the condition was vested in my maternal grandmother who was effectively bent double by the effects it placed on her joints. Now, I understand that young people can be struck down by the problem and that a source of this could stem from a most strange source, namely FOOD !

The story in question explained how, a girl of 18 contracted Arthritis so severely that she needed crutches to allow her to walk. The subject, now 43 years of age, caught a stomach bug on a trip to the USA, where her then boyfriend, was of all things, a Chef. Leaving the USA for Majorca in apparent good health, she was two days later struck down with high pain in her knees, toes and feet. Not recommended especially if like her you were a waitress for the summer. Four weeks in a Hospital bed followed by a further two weeks of tests, the bug was identified as YERSINIA. The bug, in the intestine was found to have originated in the USA as a result of food poisoning. Amazingly this had caused the development of what is known as "reactive arthritis "

.KNOWN ALSO AS REITER"S SYNDROME, THIS INFECTION CAN TRIGGER OFF AN INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE IN THE BODY. THE SAME REACTION CAN ALSO OCCUR FROM A SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE. TO DATE NO REASON FOR THIS TAKING PLACE HAVE BEEN DISCOVERED.

What is known is that, around or up to 4 weeks after the initial infection, the body"s immune systems go haywire and attack healthy tissues and sometimes even organs. The main areas affected are feet, hips, and knees, as in the case of the young lady at the centre of the revelations. Apparently this is not a rare situation in young people and it seems so far there is no known cure, though the condition can disappear just as swiftly as it comes to add to9 the mystery.

TREATMENT FOR SYMPTOMS BUT NOT THE CAUSES.

DOCTORS TREATING THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS CONDITION ARE AWARE THAT THEY CAN ONLY TREAT SYMPTOMS AND NOT CAUSES IN THE CASE OF THIS CONDITION WHICH THEY KNOW IS FAR FROM IDEAL. CONSEQUENTLY, WHILST PAIN KILLERS ARE PRESCRIBED, THE ONLY OTHER HELP THAT CAN CURRENTLY BE OFFERED IS THAT THE CONDITION CAN SUDDENLY VANISH JUST AS QUICKLY AS IT CAME.

Cortisone injections at 3 monthly intervals allowed the young lady to complete her Drama School Training, even though the Arthritis was prone to intensifying at least twice each year after a period of some easing. Arthroscopic surgery 6 years after the condition arrived, to remove or trim cartilage or floating bone particles were also carried out and arthroscopic examination showed her kneecaps to be not matching as they should to provide ease of movement. However this was thought to be caused by the arthritis and not the cause of it.

Happily, as predicted, the condition stabilised if not vanished, in her mid 20"s and she was able to continue with her acting career.. The subject herself is living proof of the pain and havoc that arthritis can cause to young, as well as older lives. Depressingly it seems medical science is nowhere near being able to unravel the causes of this illness and thus produce an effective treatment. Treatment for pain symptoms etc seems as far as the medics can go and as the subject here points out herself, the need for a strong Positive Mental Attitude is vital for the younger sufferers to sustain both belief that the condition will improve or vanish and to sustain there own efforts to pursue their own goals.

Not many conditions, illnesses, or diseases these days can fully baffle the medical profession but it certainly seems that so far, reactive arthritis defies their efforts to uncover the real causes of the condition in the young especially. Therefore, one final thought ! Would there be a value in medical research mounting a full programme to test if the copper coins use in inner soles could assist the process in curing, or at least relieving the symptoms of this form of arthritis ? Worth considering perhaps.
