Afghan Teen Girl Chained and Gang Raped

Updated on June 8, 2012

The Afghanistan culture is such an alien world, filled with atrocities against women because men there view them as slaves and animals. How can any Westerner there even look the other way on such things. True, some locals in positions of power also will agree that rape is simply a crime, not a custom.

Take 18 yr.old. Lal Bibi of Kabul, who was kidnapped, chained to a wall like a pig and repeatably raped and beaten by local militiamen and US trained Afghan police. Yes, you read it correctly-police. She was raped because her cousin offended a family linked to the militia commander. One Afghan commander commented that this was not the first time this sort of thing happened because many in the police force are just illiterate thugs and bandits who harass fellow citizens. So far, of the gang that raped her, only two men have been arrested after the teen went public, something seldom done there.

The whole rape was one of reprisal from those who had been offended. She was only a cousin to the person who had insulted the family. The insulted family had two options, either accept the teen girl as a gift for the wrong or violence. Because there was no resolution, the offended family took revenge on the girl.

The teen girl went public knowing full well that in Afghanistan society she is a marked women whose hymen has been broken. No man will want her. She will be subject to even more bad events. Both her mom and grandmother had thought about killing her unless justice prevails and the rapists are in jail. Will the government convict the tribal militiamen? The man who abducted the teen has disappeared. He had already been charged with rape six months ago, yet, was freed.

Worse of all, her mother said, "If nobody wants to solve this crime, then they should behead her. We don't want her". In this country, family honor is paramount.

The teen herself has said, "I'm already a dead person".

I have been observing Afghanistan closely. The trouble is Islam that condones such behavior. Its about time the world collectively intervened, but the Muslim nations will not allow it. To think the USA is the partner of Saudi Arabia, the most obscurantist country in the world.
