Alpha Lipoic Acid For Diabetes

Updated on September 13, 2012

Alpha Lipoic Acid and Diabetes

Alpha lipoic acid may be the most important supplement for diabetics to take for three main reasons. I have diabetes, and when I take my ALA, my blood glucose levels improve, my cholesterol ratio improves, and I know I am taking a great antioxidant to improve my health.

Reason #1

Alpha lipoic acid protects the liver. Diabetics tend to be on numerous medications which can damage the liver. Diabetes can also increase your risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, which can lead to a scarring of the liver. ALA not only protects the liver from damage, it also helps to reid the body of toxins.

Reason #2

Alpha lipoic acid can help to reduce the negative symptoms such as burning, itching, and painful skin associated with peripheral neuropathy. It can also help to protect against, and sometimes even reverse diabetic neuropathy of the extremities.

Reason #3

Perhaps the most important reason to consider supplementing Alpha lipoic acid for diabetics is its role in glucose uptake. ALA can help the cells of the body become more receptive to insulin and glucose and allow for the glucose to be entered into the cells and out of the blood.
