Alzolam uses and side effects
Alzolam is a benzodiazepine class medication prescribed for anxiety. Other common indications are reduced sleep and epileptic seizures. But it is rarely prescribed for epileptic seizures. Its generic name is Alprazolam. Most common brand name is Xanax
It is a prescription only medication that should be prescribed by a doctor after seeing the patient. It is dangerous to take this medication on your own.
Uses of Alzolam
- It is used to relieve short term anxiety: It is useful for anxious individuals to participate in social events or exams. However, long term use can cause problems.
- It can be used to induce sleep in acutely disturbed psychiatry patients.
How Alzolam acts?
Alzolam acts by augmenting the action of GABA A receptor in the brain. GABA or gamma-Aminobutyric acid is a common inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. Increased GABA action reduces anxiety and reduces chance of having seizures. Therefore, by way increasing GABA neurotransmission in the brain Alzolam reduces anxiety and reduces chance of getting seizures.
Increased effects of GABA can cause increased sleepiness or drowsiness. Therefore, as an side effect alzolam causes drowsiness.

What are the side effects of Alzolam?
Most common side effect of Alzolam is drowsiness. It can cause drowsiness next day if taken at night. In addition, it can cause memory impairment. These effects can cause problems in driving and operating machinery.
In addition, it can cause problems in balance (ataxia) and mental confusion. Mental confusion is common among elderly. Other common side effects are headache and reduced blood pressure (hypotension). Sometimes Alzolam can cause visual disturbances and hallucinations. In addition, it can cause difficulty in speaking or dysarthria. Some people may complain of tremor when alzolam is taken in higher doses.
When you should not take Alzolam?
Alzolam should not be taken if you have neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis. It can aggrevate respiratory depression, therefore, it should not be taken by people with difficulty in breathing. In addition, patients with psychotic disorders such as Schizophrenia should not take this medication, unless specifically prescribed by a qualified psychiatrist.
Problems associated with Alzolam use?
This medication can cause dependence. That means it is needed in increasing amounts to get the same effect in long term use. In addition, sudden withdrawal of it can cause withdrawal syndrome that can sometimes be fatal.
Alzolam can cause mild euphoria therefore, it can become habit forming. Therefore, Alzolam abuse is a common problem.
